Diplomacy ratings
So, I love what Ghostmaker did with the ratings systems but the topic fascinates me so, if you were implementing a new system - how would you do it?

Tournaments, opinions please
I've read the descriptions on http://tournaments.webdiplomacy.net/ but I'd like to hear participants thoughts on them. Why do you play the masters over the Webdip leagues and vice versa. If I'm only interested in played one which one would you recommend. Thanks!

Global Chat FTF games and the effect on gameplay.
I recently played a series (11) games with some friends over the past month, and we decided to do them all as FTF games. There are all players for at least a month, so decently experienced. A few observations that I observed:

National differences:

Britain: Britain survived or drew every single game, but wasn't ever a winner or loser. In public chat, it is very difficult to allow either France or Germany to convoy you to the land without getting Russia or Italy siding with the other.

France: France was by far the best record in our games. A french player who asks Italy for a NAP nearly always gets it. They can therefore focus on dealing with either England or Germany, and, since England can't land armies on the continent, France will usually force their way into some of the central states.

Germany: Germany does terribly. English assault are doomed to fail, as England will stay focused on Scandanavia (and rarely lands armies) and France is busy attacking them in the south. Germany can hold this position fairly well, but Russia and Italy are often tempted to send a unit to help either England (Italy) or France (Russia).

Russia: Russia is in an equally bad spot as Germany. Because they have so many borders (England, Germany, Austria, Turkey) they are very succeptible to the group seeing that they are a liar if they break a truce or too. In our games at least, the first time Russia lied was the last time they held STP (England would make a nice friend with a southern ally if they force this) or RUM (If Austria and Turkey feel like they are played against each other.)

Italy: Italy's paradox of their lack of allies or enemies is reversed here. By playing the role of "moderator" between Germany/France and Austria/Turkey, Italy can sometimes secure a center or two on goodwill alone.

Austria: Every single game saw Austria get defeated. The ho-humming of indecisive alliances (spawned from a lack of commitment to outright declaring war on a player) led Turkey, Italy, and Russia to all approach the Balkans. When war broke out, it was always over Serbia or Budapest initially.

Turkey: Turkey was the best by far. Italy could never effectively attack (Turkey can counter a Lepanto if Italy says they will attempt one), Austria cannot afford to take Greece from you because doing so will make Italy upset with them, and Russia will not dare break a pact over the Black Sea (Or else their many contacts will shun them). By doing nothing, Turkey will grab 2-3 centers from the collapsing Austria, and then Sevastopol when Russia invariably falls.

So why do these tendencies differ from webDip? Much of what you say is also reflected here (except the Turkey thing).

Well, it was FTF, so there was a much sharper leaning towards grand alliances, and metagaming tendencies. As such, people were compelled to be honest. That's one of the main Reason Russia lost - they were handicapped because nobody could trust them unless they were a goodie two-shoes.
