Punishing leaves
I'm sure the following might not be taken well by some, but I just wanted to make some general comments on leavers. I think there needs to be a system through which players who leave consistently are punished. Now with non-anon games that isn't as much a problem if people considering joining a game look at the people who have already joined, and what their leave percent is.

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Wanted--President/Prime Minister: Qualities: ...?
After a couple weeks of theological debate and bunk--and because I've just become completely enamored with "The West Wing"...yeah, it's an "old" show at5+ years, but I was too young to care when it first aired--we swing back to the political side here, and ask a simple question: what is desirable and/or needed in a modern world leader (disclaimer: This is NOT about the race, so please leave fights about Obama, Bachmann, etc., for another thread.)

Hello? Anyone there?
I tend to get the last post on a lot of politically-charged threads. Is it because of my debating prowess or do I tend to (borrowing a metaphor from American football) "jump on the pile" after the argument is long over? I hate to start an attention-whorish "Hey, look at me!" thread like this, but my curiosity got the better of me.

I'm not back, but...
I may well be on dipcast very soon, and I've been more distant from webdip over the past year. What tournaments have happened, who's been running them? Is there anything else big I may have missed? Have school of war things happened, any changes to the way live games are played? How about gunboat tournaments? I've plenty of stuff to talk about, but would like to be a little more filled in on recent developments :)

i'm back on webdiplomacy since about 3 hours after being away for more then a year and i was just in a tournament, to be clear; it wasn't my fault the first few months and after that i had no reason to come back since everything would've ended already...
now i'm curious, when do there come new tournaments like the leagues or something??
no matter wich one, as long as you tell wich one and when...

Question - Convoy orders & Facebook
2 questions:
1. In webDiplomacy, can an army be convoyed without its intention? (last line of paragraph http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Diplomacy/Rules#Convoy)
2. Is webDiplomacy the same as the phpDiplomacy on Facebook? Thanks.

Pigeons: Now smarter than humans

Actually, it's disturbing to see that we are no longer the smartest servants of our dolphin overlords. Our fall to less pleasant form of slavery is inevitable. I hope my new pigeon overseer will treat me fairly and won't peck me everytime I fail to meet my production quota.
Less pleasant, perhaps, but they ARE more pheasant.
Also:

"This doesn’t mean that pigeons are “smarter than humans” as some news stories have claimed..."

Fun fact:
When asked to do basic math like addition and subtraction and the basic times tables Chimps can complete the math on average 15% faster then students at MIT.

Does that make them smarter?
Until one of these animals can do derive and solve relativity problems (which granted most humans can't do themselves) I refuse to believe that any pigeon is smarter then me. Same goes to Dolphins, Chimps and Rats

"On the first day of testing, the pigeons switched on just a third of the trials."
Well on the first trial I bet humans switched at around the same amount.
But I bet on the second trial most humans would switch.

Also this test doesn't show that humans are more intelligent. It showed that we can do a better job at training animals to do our bidding.

"I refuse to believe that any pigeon is smarter then me. Same goes to Dolphins, Chimps and Rats "

Sounds to me like this thread has touched a nerve Fasces349. I think you secretly resent pigeons and chimps etc for being smarter than you; hence you dost protest too much.

Apart from being an unfunny Captain Obvious, you evidently missed this part:

"Hebranson and Schroder presented 13 students with a similar set-up to the pigeons. There were limited instructions and no framing storyline – just three lit keys and a goal to earn as many points as possible. They had to work out what was going on through trial and error and they had 200 goes at guessing the right key over the course of a month.

At first, they were equally likely to switch or stay. By the final trial, they were still only switching on two thirds of the trials. They had edged towards the right strategy but they were a long way from the ideal approach of the pigeons. And by the end of the study, they were showing no signs of further improvement."

How is pretending to be stupid fun?
Well, I thought it was obvious that the average human is about as smart as a flea... Doesn't mean I am.

Playing stupid forms a bulk of skills any comedy stands upon. Far behind are skills of playing drunk, playing extremist in anything and others. Although there is e.g. a nice synergy between playing stupid and playing extremist, that's true.

"The Trial of Henry Kissinger"...What Do Those Who Actually KNOW About This Man Think?
Currently watching the documentary-version of the book "The Trials of Henry Kissinger" by Christopher Hitchens--boy, he seems to be coming up a lot with me lately, first his debates on FOX and then his news articles--and it's intriuged me, and since we CLEARLY have no shortage of political pundits online, I thought I'd ask those who might actually KNOW of this man and these issues already...Kissinger--what's your opinion, diplomatic hero or war criminal?

Attention hardcopy book fans:
Borders is going out of business, and all remaining stores will start liquidating this Friday. This makes me sad, since they're the second major corporate HQ in Ann Arbor to close in the last five years, we're literally U of M and nothing else at this point.
