Punishing leaves
I'm sure the following might not be taken well by some, but I just wanted to make some general comments on leavers. I think there needs to be a system through which players who leave consistently are punished. Now with non-anon games that isn't as much a problem if people considering joining a game look at the people who have already joined, and what their leave percent is.

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Wanted--President/Prime Minister: Qualities: ...?
After a couple weeks of theological debate and bunk--and because I've just become completely enamored with "The West Wing"...yeah, it's an "old" show at5+ years, but I was too young to care when it first aired--we swing back to the political side here, and ask a simple question: what is desirable and/or needed in a modern world leader (disclaimer: This is NOT about the race, so please leave fights about Obama, Bachmann, etc., for another thread.)

Hello? Anyone there?
I tend to get the last post on a lot of politically-charged threads. Is it because of my debating prowess or do I tend to (borrowing a metaphor from American football) "jump on the pile" after the argument is long over? I hate to start an attention-whorish "Hey, look at me!" thread like this, but my curiosity got the better of me.

I'm not back, but...
I may well be on dipcast very soon, and I've been more distant from webdip over the past year. What tournaments have happened, who's been running them? Is there anything else big I may have missed? Have school of war things happened, any changes to the way live games are played? How about gunboat tournaments? I've plenty of stuff to talk about, but would like to be a little more filled in on recent developments :)

Question - Convoy orders & Facebook
2 questions:
1. In webDiplomacy, can an army be convoyed without its intention? (last line of paragraph http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Diplomacy/Rules#Convoy)
2. Is webDiplomacy the same as the phpDiplomacy on Facebook? Thanks.
ulytau (541 D)

1. No, you have to order the army to move to desired space via convoy as well as order the fleets (or other players have to make such order to their fleets) to convoy that army.

Facebook Diplomacy was developed using an older version of the source code for this site. This site is the original and the best. It has many features that are lacking in the Facebook version and the standard of play is much higher.
If you have only just joined us - welcome.

1) No. For more info on detailed rule issues see
http://webdiplomacy.net/datc.php
Click on "Show DATC choice details" to see all of the nuanced adjudication decisions.

2) phpDip on Facebook is basically a port of this website to the facebook platform. The code for this site is open source and people are free to set up their own installations. I believe it is using a much older version of the code. The community and games are completely independent.

Re: Unwanted convoys. I've always felt this took something away from the game. To me, unwanted convoys were another risk to be mitigated same as unwanted support against a self bounce. And I know the judges took it even further by having the army's move specify the full convoy route. I'm not sure which I dislike more: the "any route will do" where a dislodgement might not stop the convoy if an alternate convoy route can be found in the orders, or having to follow a specific route. I'd much rather be true to the boardgame rules and allow an unrequested convoy.

How does an unrequested convoy work, D?
And I always thought it was weird that a convoy can still take place even if it's attacked.
SacredDigits (102 D)
21 Jul 11 UTC
It works like this.

France has a Fleet Gulf of Lyon, F Marseilles.

England has a A Spain, A Gas, F W Med.

France suspects England will be going Spain to Mars with Gas support and bouncing W Med off Gulf of Lyon. He has no hope of keeping Mars.

But he doesn't need to go down a SC.

F GoL C A Spain to Marseilles. F Marseilles to Spain.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
21 Jul 11 UTC
Oh okay, because the act of convoying counts as a move and a half (sort of). It's as if th game allows Spain to take Mars while A Mars steps on the fleet in GoL, and then it moves to Spain. Calling it an unrequested convoy seems weird though.
SacredDigits (102 D)
21 Jul 11 UTC
Well, England isn't requesting it, in fact, he'd much rather not trade Spain for Mars.
SacredDigits (102 D)
21 Jul 11 UTC
It's a French fleet convoying an English army so another French fleet can move to the vacated province.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
21 Jul 11 UTC
Wait, so the A Spain moves to Mars, Mars get bounced to Pied or disbanded, and then the F GoL convoys that army that used to be in Spain and should now be in Mars back to Spain?
Am I reading that correctly?
SacredDigits (102 D)
21 Jul 11 UTC
No.

A Spain gets to Mars via the GoL convoy, not land. This allows the F Mars to get into Spain, since otherwise he'd have to retreat Piedmont or disband. Because now, with the unrequested convoy, the army is coming from GoL, making Spain a valid move for the Mars unit. It's still A Spain for purposes of Gas supporting it, though.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
21 Jul 11 UTC
Oh, but I thought an army CANNOT be convoyed unless it asks specifically to be convoyed.
SacredDigits (102 D)
21 Jul 11 UTC
That's only in the webdip version. It's a legit strategy in the board game rules.

Also, in the board game, you can write anything in your orders and if you mess up, sucks to be you, the unit holds. Like if I accidentally had Spain S A Gascony to Mars when there was no A in Gascony (damn it, I meant Burgundy!). It's still possible to misorder in Webdip, but not AS possible.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
21 Jul 11 UTC
I didn't realize that was legit in the board game rules. And I knew that miswriting orders do result in holding in FtF. I've benefited more than once because other people didn't write correctly.
Draugnar (0 DX)
21 Jul 11 UTC
In webdip, misorders are still valid orders, where as misorders in the boardgame and in the old postal version could be orders like A Mun-Mos (an impossible move no matter what as both are landlocked).
SacredDigits (102 D)
21 Jul 11 UTC
Right, in my example, there was no A Gascony to support, so it wasn't a valid order. Webdip will only let you support hold or support move units that are physically there.

"The Trial of Henry Kissinger"...What Do Those Who Actually KNOW About This Man Think?
Currently watching the documentary-version of the book "The Trials of Henry Kissinger" by Christopher Hitchens--boy, he seems to be coming up a lot with me lately, first his debates on FOX and then his news articles--and it's intriuged me, and since we CLEARLY have no shortage of political pundits online, I thought I'd ask those who might actually KNOW of this man and these issues already...Kissinger--what's your opinion, diplomatic hero or war criminal?

Attention hardcopy book fans:
Borders is going out of business, and all remaining stores will start liquidating this Friday. This makes me sad, since they're the second major corporate HQ in Ann Arbor to close in the last five years, we're literally U of M and nothing else at this point.
