Announcement: The Champions' Trophy.

Some of you may have noticed this on my site. It will take place once the second league season and GFDT2008/9 are over. There will be 2 games running concurrently, with 76 hour phase, and I hope to have all press saved throughout the game so that it could be published after the game.

Please un-pause, or draw this game

This game has been paused since last year. One of the players refuses to un-pause. At the same time that player asked for a draw, and the draw also needs only one vote. It is obvious that it is not going anywhere, because the last vote that was cast was on January 15th.
Please do something with this game.

Max builds in 1901

Germany and France (though rarely both!) can sometimes build the maximum of three units in 1901.

Has anyone else ever seen another power get a max build (ie three for Austria, Italy, Turkey, England or four for Russia)?

England can't get 3 unless the French fleet convoys his army to Bel, Germany lets a fleet into Holland, and Russia doesn't bounce Norway. Austria can do it with some manipulation of Italy (making sure he doen't attack ,if Turkey gets the black sea and Russia moves moscow to st. pete). Double support into Rumaia, take Serbia and Greece). Russia can get 4. Sweden, Rumania, a lucky vienna/bud and Norway if England is CD (happens a lot actually).

Well, I don't think England can do it... seeing as he as an army stuck in the mainland or a fleet stuck convoying it.

Italy's got a ridiculously improbably max build. So does Russia... and Turkey. Austria's actually got a decent chance (relatively) with Serbia, Greece and Rumania.

Can Russia bounce Norway? The fleet goes out of St. Petersburg the first half of 1901 and enters Sweden the second.

I was just in a game where Russia got 4 builds without a CD England... but England did misorder so I guess that's just as good.

I've seen Austria do it:
sp01: A Bud-Rum, A Vie-Bud, F Tri-Alb
Au01: A Rum S A Bud-Ser, A Bud-Ser, F Alb-Gre

Allied with Italy; Italy convoyed an army to Tunis and left the other in Venice
Russia opened Mos-StP, War-Liv, Sev-Bla and wasn't in a position to do anything
Turkey opened Ank-Bla, Smy-Arm, Con-Bul and equally couldn't do much; he'd given up on Greece anyway

Still no Turkeys and no Englands.
Italy has to open Rom-Ven, Ven-Tri or Tyr, Nap-Tyr or Ion and then
fleet to Tunis or Greece, Ven-Tri and the other army to Ser, Bud or Vie.
I can't believe that Austria would carry on with a Lepanto if Italy opened Rom-Ven, so the only way I can see it happening is agree a Lepanto in Spring 01, stab with Rom-Ven and then Austria goes CD for Autumn 01.

Austria: Rumania, Serbia, Greece. I actually think that Serbia, Greece, Venice is a more likely way to get three builds for Austria, but that's the one I actually saw.

England, I can only see getting three builds if everyone agreed to let it happen: France has to move a fleet to the channel and then convoy an english army to Belgium.

Turkey should be able to get Bulgaria, Greece, Sevastopol in some game. Can't see you getting Sev and Rum, though opening F Ank-Arm against F Sev-Bla might see you pulling it off if the Russians completely screw up.

Alternatively, I suppose you could do Ank-Bla-Sev and russia does Sev-Rum and then you do Con-Bul-Rum and austria supports you into Rum. Unlikely (Russia will surely cover Sev unless he goes CD after one move) but I guess possible.

That won't work, the convoy into Sev will be bounced by Russia's failed move to Rum.

I've seen Italy do it with a Key Lepanto opening. I think England would have the hardest time since it would require France to actively give up a build of their own.

Good for you. But I have a third unit. Jet Fighter. Not only can it move anywhere and doesn't need support, but you can shoot other armies and fleets.

There are sites where there are indepth stats for openings with Gunboat game tournaments
The hardest country to get 3 builds with is England where you need the French to convoy you from Wales to Belgium (typically) in order to pull it off. I have never done that as it would be abuse of my jEDI powers.
However, I have done all the others.

The next question is would you take the three builds? Someone getting out to an early lead, I have found, ends up getting ganged up on pretty quickly...

OK, how about a game where we all agree, in advance of playing (before we know who is which power), that we let England get three builds in 1901?

I think that would make for a fun 5-point WTA game.

Mind you, F/G against E is a slow war anyway - and will be even worse against a six-unit England. Both Italy and Russia, as the next victims, usually try to stab France and Germany (respectively) in the back

I've seen Italy gain Marseilles, Trieste and Tunis in the first turn. France decided to be incredibly stupid (I think he went Mar-Bur, then didn't bounce), and Austria decided to go all-out for Greece. That was a strange opening year.

Varient Idea

I've got too much on to take up another game myself, but I was wondering.
Do you think it would make an interesting game if you were only allowed to send 1 message, of up to 20 words, to each player per turn. I think it would be quite interesting, because with such a limit you'd have to be very careful how you used them. Too blunt, you offend them. Too verbose, you say nothing.
Also, having just one message, when would you send it? Early - you speak first / Late - they can't reply

For less experianced players
