Inspector Frederick Abberline had the dress and manner of a bank manager, more than a policeman, but his polite exterior belied a man of great experience. He also knew the streets of Whitechapel with intimacy.

Over the past few days, he had been slowly drawing together the clues. Perhaps he worked more slowly than the late Mister Holmes, he mused, but he was getting there. A postcard, a line or two of graffiti, a blood-stained leather apron, part of a woman's kidney - he grimaced as he prodded at the last of these items - all began to help him form a picture.

It was time to strike. Lestrade was elsewhere, no doubt, but he gathered two stout constables, and made his way to Hanbury Street. There was a particular lodging house there, one of the inhabitants of which was a person of particular interest.

Abberline and his men were almost at the address, passing the great bulk of the Black Eagle brewery, whose tall chimney only added to the afternoon fog, when they perceived a man running toward them, pursued by a determined mob.

"Hold!", he yelled, raising his palm toward the fleeing man. "I said, hold!"

As he grabbed hold of the man, he was surprised to find it was none other than his suspect.

"Well now, you saucy fellow. What's the meaning of all this?"

The mob arrived, gathering around them.

"He's a grave robber!"
"He's a body snatcher!"
"He's with Burke and Hare!"

Abberline smiled.

"I do not believe so... But I do want him."

He turned to look carefully into the darting, haunted eyes of the man whose lapels he had hold of.

"We've been wanting a word with you for a little while now. Haven't we.... Jack?"
