Have we stopped doing drone strikes during Trump Admin?

#1 Post by brainbomb » Thu Oct 29, 2020 10:04 pm

This is a valid question. I legit dont know if we still blow up terrorists from above. Obama took tons of heat for drone strikes. But has it stopped under Trumpykins?

The BBC says no.
An uptick in deaths
Tara McKelvey, BBC News, White House Reporter

Human-rights activists complained about the drone programme under the Obama administration, saying the operations were overly secretive and hid the fact that civilians were sometimes killed in the strikes.

President Obama responded by saying that strikes were carried out in a precise manner - and that intelligence officials would release data on civilians who were accidentally killed in the strikes that occurred outside of war zones. President Trump has built on the existing programme and made it even more ambitious.

During Mr Obama's eight years in office, 1,878 drone strikes were carried out, according to researchers. Since Mr Trump was elected in 2016, there have been 2,243 drone strikes. The Republican president has also made some of the operations, the ones outside of war zones, more secretive. As a result, things have different today: under Mr Trump, there are more drone strikes - and less transparency.

A direct comparison between Obama and Trump on the issue is difficult to make, as the US military's drone capabilities have increased dramatically in recent years. In much the same way as you couldn't draw many conclusions from George III's relative lack of intensive drone use other than that he didn't have any. I dare say that Obama, if he commanded the same US military as Trump has done, would have used drones to a larger degree.

But it is fair to say that both Obama and Trump failed to show any great signs of reluctance in drone usage. Has Biden mentioned them much?

I dont think the media, whether liberal or even fox, gives a shit about drone use on foreign soil. its a non-topic for trumps entire term. Its barely even a data point

The media is interested in the deaths of US citizens and soldiers in combat. That's why after Trump's hurried and poorly planned attack in Yemen resulted in a death and him getting yelled at by the family, Trump mostly goes with drones and missiles like in Syria.

Look at how quickly Reagan withdrew troops from Lebanon after the truck bombing of the marine barracks.

And that website is just the drones, not other bombs.

Remember when trump dropped the mother of all bombs?
