The Roman Citizenry stood, almost in unison. The 19 gladiators down in the arena had certainly spent a lot of time swinging their gladii, piking their pikes, angling their defensive armour, darning their nets, and glaring at the other gladiators.

They all wore masks, of course. Some masks fit their personality perfectly. Other masks acting with adherence to their purpose: to disguise the identity of the gladiator.

The only way to determine who was behind which mask, was to fight. While sometimes a gladiator’s words might give hints, or give clues, or give ideas… no one knew for sure until death allowed the masks to be removed and the gladiator’s identity to be revealed.

Seated alongside the arena, close enough to see the action, and to be sprayed by blood, were a pair of heralds. They were starting something new here. A new technology, that hopefully will let all of Rome take part in the Gladitorial Contests even if they were unable to attend the actual fight.

They called their invention: The Radium.

It looked a lot like a trumpet. But MUCH bigger. The heralds spoke into the narrow end, and the sound was amplified as it left the wide end. Since the sound was thus broadened, and since the heralds were casting their voices out to the masses, the heralds called themselves “Broad-casters.”

Howard Cosellius: Wow, what a boring battle THIS has been. The gladiators have been roaming around the arena, lurking in corners, and politely discussing anything BUT the fight right in front of their eyes.

Shepherd Smithius: Yes, Howard. But it IS understandable. This group is brainless. Literally.

HC: But now it looks like today’s battle is coming to a close.

SS: SO many gladiators have taken hits. Nearly every gladiator has had SOMEONE take a shot at them.

HC: Yes… some have ducked, some have laughed in the face of danger… some apparently went to church, and some have hidden in the corners.

SS: Um…… Howard…. This is a round arena.

HC: …

SS: What is THAT??? Some sort of weird vehicle!

HC: It reads on the side: Camero… hmmm…

SS: Wow… some tumbleweeds going across the arena! Aren’t they only in America??

HC: what’s America??...

SS: LOOK at that! A death wound neatly avoided.

HC: But at the end…. The Humanity! The Gore! (does that gore contribute to global warming? Al never tell!)

SS: But now it’s clear! Has lost his right arm, his left knee, his Maxumus Buttocks, and… oh no…

HC: If only we could present a Wobert…. or a Wodewick… or a Bawabbas!

SS: Wrong movie, Howard.

HC: A wascally wabbit?

SS: …

HC: But no! TrPRADO is dead. He was Tristinus Pradinium…. A Lesser Gladiator
