Re: The mass exodus
They actually don't, because we don't profit off of their game. You would think that after a decade of being one of the most popular Diplomacy sites around we would have thought of something like that.
Re: The mass exodus
Playdip works an angle where you pay them money as a "donation" in order to unlock more features. I'm sure that they have determined that they are within their legal guidelines to require "donations" in order to have access to the full scope of the site, but we don't feel that it is right to solicit donations in that manner.
From their "Go Premium!" page:
From their "Go Premium!" page:
Playdiplomacy.com's main goal is to promote the DIplomacy boardgame to a large audience. This is the reason why playing is free for everyone, and meant to stay that way.
As you can imagine though, this website needs a lot of time and some money to keep things running smoothly. Some players are helping us with contributions or through donations. This website can exist only because of the help from these players, and to thank them they get access to some extra "Premium" features.
Re: The mass exodus
Diplomacy is copyrighted. Hasbro holds a trademark on the name as well if I remember correctly. Selling something we do not own is illegal without licensing rights, which were given to Avalon Hill by the creator of the game and have been redistributed where they see fit, but not here. Hosting it without cost is not only legal but widely encouraged because it's free advertising. Avalon Hill and Hasbro are smart enough to recognize that out of the 100,000 users on our site and countless others on other sites, some of us will buy the board game from them.
If you have an actual question for me, ask away, but the point of this is that exchanging money over a game over webDiplomacy is not allowed. If you want to exchange money over a game without using webDiplomacy, feel free.
Re: The mass exodus
i find it tremendously humorous that you think that hasbro may consider you a value add to a smaller percentage of users that may buy a 50 year old game. I could contact the COO of Hasbro, whom i know, and ask if there even relevant to them. Just give the word ...until then, what the site doesn't know doesn't hurt it.... nothing pertaining to money will flow through your forum.....
Re: The mass exodus
you and the owners of all diplomacy sites can figure that, if the sales, marketing or data resources of all user bases ever become something hasbro is interested in, you all would receive cease and disist orders from Hasbro. then they'd probably start their own web version of the game -----Just Saying
Re: The mass exodus
That’s wonderful insight. Thank you for letting us know how you feel. Please know we value your opinion highly and you’re still not allowed to gamble on our site.
Re: The mass exodus

Re: The mass exodus
I don't believe that there would be any issue with regards Hasbro - there have been cash prizes or ther equivalent in tournaments before.
Thier concern would be intellectual property rights - which they would already have acted upon if that was an issue for them.
Personally, I think Peterwiggin's concerns are valid, though. WebDip isn't geared for handling cash and having an 'off-site' arrangement sounds impractical and dubious anless it was through a trusted third patry like Mangopay or Paypal.
Playdip, on the other hand...

I've changed my mind.
Anybody who would like cash prizes for winning games should PM me their Chase account and routing numbers.

You can't get people to play with you and now you want them to pay for the privilege?

Maybe you should read the thread before making dumb comments. It wasn’t my idea. I just liked it.LeonWalras wrote: ↑Wed Oct 03, 2018 8:27 pmYou can't get people to play with you and now you want them to pay for the privilege?
I’ve gotten games, just getting quality games is tough. There’s only people like you left.

Re: The mass exodus
I’m down for a proper full press, WTA, standard diplomacy game. I’d just need pretty lengthy phases, I’m thinking minimum 3 days, with the understanding that I/we’d aim to ready up as soon as we can as a general rule.
