Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
Looks like we won't :)
That's a big result for Sons of Vlad though, and puts them right back into contention! It all depends on the results of the gunboats here, but its looking like a few teams will be regretting their Public Press decision if Sons of Vlad manage to sneak into the Finals.
For our gunboats, a reminder that games will be drawn after 1920. And if you could ready your moves for retreats/disbands when convenient once your teams reach a consensus on what they should be, that would be appreciated.

I really tried for the solo, but after France bounced me in Tunis in A08, it was clear that they would hold the line... Good defensive play :)

As grateful as I was to you for breaking up that CPA, I wouldn't have cut Italy if there was any chance of you getting into Tunis in 1908
Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
I stand by my decision to vote draw in that public press game when almost everyone else had and emc was likely to eat my rear soon, but not in a nice way.

Suggestion for the final round: make the Gunboat games 18 or 24 hour phase. The momentum of this awesome tournament is kind of bogging down at the moment due to how much longer the GB games are taking than the FP and PP games which have been finished for some time. There is no need for GB games to have such long phases - no press required.

Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
That the gunboat games have taken so much longer than the press games is an aberration in the history of this tournament. Typically people ready builds and retreats so the gunboats are several years ahead of the press games. This time around I'm seeing people with single retreat options check the game and not enter the order, or only save it.
At the very least I will be starting both gunboats at around the same time for the Finals. (They were initially staggered because the first would typically end while the press games were in ~1905, so I wanted some mystery to persist towards the end of press games). Phase length I'm less eager to change, as that's changing the rules of a tournament people signed up for.

Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
It should also be noted that the gunboat games are lasting longer in terms of game years too. The first two have respectively reached 1911 and 1914, and are still going on, while all the press games ended in 1909/10/11 - apart from the famous (or infamous?) Group A Public Press which ended in 1905.
But @Goldie if you want to propose some changes, such as shortening the phase length for GB, i suppose you may ask the Captains to privately PM you and tell whether their team agrees - if no one opposes the change, then it's approved

I would expect gunboat games to go much longer than press games in terms of in game years. I think that’s pretty typical - not a specific attribute of this tourney.
Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
I think the problem here is that the game's individual phases are not being pushed through when possible and instead are usually let to sit for max time, which slows things down significantly.Tom Bombadil wrote: ↑Thu Feb 25, 2021 1:35 amI would expect gunboat games to go much longer than press games in terms of in game years. Perhaps. But they still shouldn't take ACTUAL years!I would expect gunboat games to go much longer than press games in terms of in game years.

@Captains
will we all ask our gunboat teammates to try and speed the games up?

Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
For those of us in lockdown with no entertainment other than spectating the gunboat games, a slightly higher pace would be appreciated, waiting a full deadline for a single nation no option retreat is not giving me the adrenaline rollercoaster I am seeking. If people need the deadlines, all well and good, but if its just from habit of never readying up (of which I am often guilty myself) would be nice if the captains could give some gentle encouragement.

Ok, Team Prosecco Gunboat Player will ready up orders asap from now on, although i believe that was already the case.
Well, asap... i mean as soon as the server starts processing again

I like the acronym... I will definitely use it at work when answering to some customer requests, and see what happens
Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
We now enter the fourth month since games began in this tournament.
Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
PS: That's not a criticism of the organizers. I love the tournament. Just hate how the gunboat players are playing it at the moment. Move or Draw, just do something.
Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
It's better for the teams in one group if the games in the other group finishes first.
Re: Announcing the 2021 WebDip World Cup!
The World Cup (the real FIFA one) solved this by having all of the final round games start at the same time, and proceed at the same pace, so no one could get an advantage by delay. It's better for the teams in one group if the games in the other group finishes first.
The difficulty with Diplomacy is games only go "at the same pace" if they all take maximum time.
So I think Goldmember is on the right track saying he'll start the GB games at the same time in the Finals, and hopefully they'll be the first the start. I also think a shortened phase length is called for, but I respect Goldie's resistance to do this mid-tournament.
