Re: Servility Gets You Stabbed

So I sort of expect #s 4 and 5 to be some combination of - your ALLY is doing too well, and even if you're not explicitly dropping your guard to him, even a relatively minor stab can put him in strong position for a solo - your alliance stopped gaining progress / stalled out / is about to stall out,...

Re: Most exciting games ever!

Let's see, off the cuff... A couple of those FvA's or GvI's where I ALMOST beat CptMike http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=232299 http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=233928 (this one I had a nearly won position and screwed it up :( :( :( ) The time I solo'd a pretty good gunboat board as ...

Re: Starting positions

full 1900 style might be sort of interesting in that there's an EXTREME high trust opening set available to A/I/R Italy Ven-Pie, Rom-TYS, Nap-ION (and then pick which one takes Tunis and which one attacks France or Turkey) Austria Tri-Tyr, Boh-Vie, and I guess Bud-Ser? Russia War-Sil, STPNC-Nor, Mos...

Re: Starting positions

Interesting theory wrt Austria but I'm not entirely sure I agree? There's the ability to go 100% after Germany via Tri-Tyr and Vie-Boh... but only at the cost of being extrmely vulnerable to essentially all of Italy/Russia/Turkey There's the ability to send Boh to Tyr, but standard Lepanto opening c...

Re: Starting positions

I think it unbalances things a good amount, mainly because the value of being able to make certain moves is lower or higher for certain powers, PLUS those options will benefit or detriment other powers differentially England - probably builds F LVP to start with. LVP-NAO-MAO becomes normal, which hu...

Re: 1v1 Puzzles

PPPS You can probably torture the analogy to death even further by allowing for A Sev to get into Moscow and French armies to get into Norway and Finland. This then (I think?) creates three different French "emperor" type strategies 1) Convoy Finland to Prussia directly with support from Berlin, and...

Re: 1v1 Puzzles

more on that concept (lol forum time limits on editing posts): Austria has two distinct "assassin" move sets, and France two distinct "emperor" move sets. But ultimately, either Austria hits a French "emperor" with his "assassin", or France (eventually) wins. Also in this concept of it, you can cons...

Re: 1v1 Puzzles

PS to put it in more theoretical mathematical terms, I'd GUESS there's some kind of Nash Equilibrium whereby both France and Austria are optimized, but any such equilibrium can be expressed in terms of Austrian win equity = some fixed x/N, whereby N is the # of turns available for France to take Ber...

Re: 1v1 Puzzles

Off the cuff, I think it's fair to consider French strategy in the context of a game that has an N-turn limit (for instance, a site that say that if you haven't changed the board position [say, around the stalemate lines, to avoid trivial move sets] in N terms, it auto-draws - note that this is a LO...

Re: 1v1 Puzzles

It actually approaches 100% pretty reasonably well. In a given turn where France attacks Livonia, Austria has a chance to win if he's aggressive that turn. BUT, if he's aggressive in a turn where France does NOT attack Livonia, things get more interesting. from earlier in thread: Austrian move sets ...

Re: 1v1 Puzzles

fwiw, i think puzzle 3 is interesting in that I'd basically just assumed that Munich was a stalemate line from the south by itself, so it's helpful to know that this isn't actually the case, and that it's Berlin who is the key middle of the board SC to hold to establish/keep up a stalemate lien (tho...

Re: 1v1 Puzzles

I think I'd probably revise my earlier note, since France has three rather than two options in the event that F Baltic is busy doing something other than supporting or tapping Berlin... France move sets A) Ber-Mun supported by Bur/Ruhr/Kiel B) Bur-Mun supported by Ruhr/Ber, Kiel supports Ber H C) Bu...

Re: 1v1 Puzzles

I guess I'll just lay out puzzle 3 thoughts a bit more. From where I see it... 1) If France can force an army into Prussia or Piedmont, the puzzle is simple (Piedmont taps Tyrolia, then Munich can be forced or at least 50-50'd; Prussia taps Silesia, Munich can be 100% forced without risk of unit swa...

Re: What is the best country in bot games?

The bots don't know how to play as Austria, but if a player draws it, it's a winnable game if things break right. But you're also at solid odds to get hostile R/I/T opens and just die quickly, and there's little you can do about it.

Re: What is the best country in bot games?

I've found winning with Italy to be almost absurdly easy (though admittedly a small sample size) - just don't attack Austria in 1901 and he'll roll over for you, plus the computer seems to suck at recognizing critical stalemate positions, so getting into and past MAO when you start growing is much e...

Re: Honest vs. Lying - Opening

Some of it depends on the situational details. If you and an ally can obliterate a 3rd power by getting them to incorrectly trust at the wrong time, then it's often worth the effort. But you have to have that relationship whereby you'll have a friend to absorb the hate and blowback from an early bet...
