Re: NFL DRAFT 2018

I am not in favor of the draft. I think we should have only an all volunteer NFL. I hear that if you dodge the draft, they send you off to play in the CFL. The imperialist war machine is capable of such horrors... Isn't the CFL where they play soccer? Nah, it's the Canadian Football League. Plays s...

Any musicians here?

If so, tells us what you play and maybe share a sample if you have it. I play ukulele mostly. Started learning it about a year ago as a joke and found that I actually really liked it. I played piano for a long time before moving out and didn't realize how much I'd missed playing music. Saving up for...

Re: /hg/ History General: A running thread for discussion of the past

Bunch of periods and events that interest me. - The Arab Conquests and society under the Caliphates. - The Byzantine Empire: Fascinated by the whole thing. Especially the early Christian heresies and splits. - Primitive accumulation, the transition from feudalism to capitalism. - WWI, particularly t...

Strategy Tidbits: Russia

This is a thread for any of your miscellaneous advice and opinions about playing Russia in Classic Diplomacy. It can be about openings, alliances, special considerations for gunboat, whatever you like. Just keep it coming! 8-) Couple opinions of mine to start... F Sev-Rum in Spring 1901 is almost al...

Re: The Italian Draw

I disagree. The starting position is actually decently strong, defensively. You can launch crippling attacks on France or Austria in 1901 and nobody can really retaliate against you unless you completely botch your orders or diplomacy. Italy needs to be ruthless enough to take advantage of this. If ...

Re: 2018 Gunboat Tournament

I signed up for the tournament last week (as a substitute, I think) and would like to withdraw, if possible.

Too many games right now to take on 7-14 more. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Re: Gunboat Strategy: Italy

Might seem odd, but I find the 1901 stab to actually be much worse in gunboat than in regular press. In regular press you can. - Set Austria up for the stab with convincing messages. - Reliably negotiate for support from the other attackers. - Browbeat Turkey into supporting you into Greece. - Gauge...

Re: Gunboat Strategy: England

I usually favor an immediate attack (or at least immediate pressure) on France when playing as England in gunboat. Abandoning Norway to Russia is a bit risky and not ideal, but isn't as suicidal as it might look. Russia tends to be under significant pressure in gunboat and usually has better things ...

Re: Let's discuss alliances in the Modern Variant.

Another observation from the eastern side of the border (I never draw western powers in Modern). Ukraine seems like the hot commodity among the three Slavs. A Russia/Ukraine alliance is great, a Poland/Ukraine alliance makes a lot of sense too. A Poland/Russia alliance isn't so attractive. Biel is p...

Re: Let's discuss alliances in the Modern Variant.

Just an update from a couple modern games I've been playing and spectating recently. Germany/Italy seems to be a strong, fairly natural alliance. Italy and Germany aren't as isolated from each other as in Standard, which can create conflict over Switz and Austria. That said, their border looks prett...

Let's discuss alliances in the Modern Variant.

I'm a complete newbie at Modern, but enjoy it a lot and noticed the lack of posts about it in the strategy section. Bearing this in mind, I'd like to start a discussion on the strengths and weaknesses of various alliance in Modern. A few questions to start - What are some of the strongest alliances ...

Re: German Strategy Thread: Forum Inauguration Edition

Ownership of Belgium It really depends on the press I'm getting from England and France. If they're squabbling over it, I usually like to sit back and limit my involvement to giving moral support to either side. As long as E/F are squabbling, I'd rather put my energy toward looking out for Austria ...

Re: [Poll] Balkan Gambit

I could go on, but I've certainly added this move to my repertoire. Prez talks about the metagame where you have to bounce Galicia and Italy won't run in on you, and its very real. But thinking out of the box is what can break a game wide open, and as Austria, you don't want to be the one who it ge...
