As I went through British authors of the era, he ticked absolutely all of the boxes. I even Googled his height!

Next game will go up in a few hours.

D.H. Lawrence.
Yes, well done. I'm a little surprised it took so long tbh.

A mystery that damo passed on "political figure." So obv never elected or held office, but must have been involved in some way, or else the answer would have been no.
Could always be Q20 .....

Famous British artists of the era:
Francis Bacon - born in Ireland
Lucian Freud - born in Germany
Frank Auerbach - born in Germany
Can't think of any others who are more famous than David Bomberg or Donald Fucking Knuth.

So probably looking for a writer who painted or sculpted on the side.

His primary source of fame is either literary or as an artist but not both.
Whew! Thanks for that hint. I was seconds away from posting T.E. Lawrence as my free guess. I'll withdraw that.

After Q20 I'll give a free piece of info after the first four incorrect guesses (if it gets that far).

Last hint

His primary source of fame is either literary or as an artist but not both.

One question remains

I still don't have a good pool of candidates, so hesitate to ask a question that won't really winnow down the pool much. However, in order to keep the game moving, I'll ask a question that may stimulate some new ideas.

One of damo's hints is that we still don't know his primary source of fame, indicating perhaps that being an author and artist are tangential to this person's fame. Given the age range, its likely this person was involved in WW2.

Was this person a brigadier general or higher during WW2?
No

Dylan Thomas
I was thinking about him, but couldn't find reference to his doing any visual arts. If you get it, good for you for tracking that down.
According to Wikipedia, he helped produce some propaganda movies for the British during WW2

Some corrections on Damo's earlier summary:

1. Real human
3.6.8.12 Born in Europe and from the British Isles but not born in London, East SE or SW England
4. No E in their first name.
5. Not over 6ft in height.
2.7.10 Born after 16th Jan 1874 and before 1930. We also know that they died before Oct 20 / 64
9. Famous for contribution to the arts.
11. Not an actor.
13. Visual artist (above summary counted 12 twice)
14. Published author (of fiction, poetry or plays)
15. Not born in Ireland
16. Not associated with Scotland

We can now add #17: Did not illustrate their own work.

So only 3 questions left, unless QM is going soft on us. How about keep it at 3 questions left, but give us a juicy clue!
Thank you.

Free info: [much] more famous (imo) than David Bomberg

Hint: Do not concentrate on the fact that both questions 13 & 14 led to the answer 'Yes'. If you search 'artist author' or vice versa it won't help (I've tried).

Things you don't know:

gender
primary source of fame
start and end of life details (other than the ranges established)
