How many/Which languages do you speak?
And how well do you speak them? And where are you from? How did you learn the languages? Just curious if speaking/learning multiple languages is a universal thing...

I speak Dutch because that's where I'm from, I speak English, not sure how I learned it though, and am learning French and German for school because I have to, I'll very likely drop German after this year though...

Value difference between Win/Draw/Survive
What is the value difference between a Win, Draw, Survive? Not as it related to "points" but as it related to your rating on the site.

Property
One of the lessons I've learned from the crisis that we in Europe have been dragged through ever since the bail out of Lehman Brothers in 2008 is how fragile certain forms of property are, such as money, but also pensions (future money).

Difficulty with the countdown clock
Difficulty with the countdown clock
Yaniv (1323 D(S))
11 Apr 13 UTC
I regularly play 5-minute per phase games.

The countdown clock appears at the top left in red but never counts down from 5 minutes. Occasionally it only counts down from a start of less than half a minute though it seems that the most common start is about a minute and a half.

Once the clock counts down to zero, I would expect the phase to end, that orders are no longer able to be processed, the moves be made and the next phase, whether it be retreats, builds or the next phase, to come into play. Even though I refresh the screen, it is evident that we're still in the same phase and orders can continue to be entered and or modified. Occasionally, for a duration of a split second, you can see another countdown clock, this time in black. I continually refresh the screen because there is no telling when the phase actually ends.

And more than once, though admittedly not very often, once the new phase has begun I've had just seconds to get my orders in - its as if a phase had already started and I have been unable to access the new phase and that by the time I've been granted access there remains little time left.

I've gotten into the habit of entering a single order, pressing save, and then continuing onto the next order, and pressing save again.

I'm wondering if there is a display setting or something I need to change to rectify this problem. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers from frosty, Montreal, Canada.

You're not the first to report this problem. There was a server reset the other week and I don't think the time is synced properly.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

First, verify your computer's timezone is set correctly and that your clock is synched with a time server.

Second, as 2WL indicates, the server reset may have the server's clock out of synch.

Oh, and third, what browser (and version) are you using?
Alderian (2425 D(S))
11 Apr 13 UTC
Also, you say "countdown clock appears at the top left in red".

Top left? The clock is always at the top right for me, and at least in the one I'm looking at isn't turning red until it gets under 5 minutes.
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Apr 13 UTC
Well, the red makes sense as he is saying it usually reflects the red because it usually countsdown from about 1.5 minutes.

As far as left versus right, I suspect someone is hand dyslexic. <grin>
Alderian (2425 D(S))
11 Apr 13 UTC
That's what I figured for the left versus right. But he said it is red when it isn't counting down from 5 minutes. The red is only applied when there are less than 300 seconds (5 minutes) left. It should not be red when at 5 minutes or more. What he is describing doesn't match the code so I'm trying to determine if his description is lacking or if something funny is going on.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
11 Apr 13 UTC
But now you've said something interesting as well. "it usually countsdown from about 1.5 minutes"

From 300 to 359 seconds it should say "5 mins". At 299 seconds it'll switch to "4 mins, 59 secs" and should update every second from that point on.

Is that not what you experience?
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Apr 13 UTC
He said - "Occasionally it only counts down from a start of less than half a minute though it seems that the most common start is about a minute and a half. "

So he is never seeing the full 5 minutes. He is always starting at 90 seconds or less. In other words, his clock is 3.5 minutes off from the server clock.

I would also encourage Yaniv to turn off caching on his browser. It could be that the "suddenly changes and only have seconds to enter orders" is partly a caching problem.

Ah, thanks Draugnar, got it now. I was thinking he meant it was stuck saying 5 minutes. But you are right, he meant that it never even started there, instead starting at a lower value.

The game drags out
Every experienced players would use this feature to their advantage. It's a nice feature so that you don't miss a turn.

I propose, to take a point off from the any potential points won in the game against the player, if each time the turn expired with ""Orders completed, but not ready for next turn".

Is it legal to discuss a game in the forums?
If so, I think it would be fun to play a "forum" game. No press in game, all communication must take place on the forum, no private messages.

It'll give others the chance to troll our play. Should be funny. Who's interested and uses the forum a lot?

The Other Other Kennedy Assassination
We anti-conspiracists strongly believe the narrative that Ted Kennedy negligently killed a woman in Chappaquiddick in 1969. However, those smarter than us insist that Kennedy was actually under the influence of a powerful Cuban mind-control experiment and that Mary Jo Kopechne was actually Marilyn Monroe in disguise.
