A Greeting
It seems that we all compete against each other yet know so little about each other outside of WebDiplomacy. In this thread, we'll all state something interesting about ourselves.

For me, I collect coins.

Getting exposed to "Diplomacy" - by H. Kissinger
Absolutely brilliant. Written by a true genius (not passing moral, only intellectual judgment). It teaches everything one needs to know about the mechanics of RL diplomacy.

Bobby Fischer on chess
"[Capablanca] wanted to change the rules already, back in the twenties, because he said chess was getting played out. He was right. Now chess is completely dead. It is all just memorization and prearrangement. It’s a terrible game now. Very uncreative." from a radio interview, 2006

Thoughts?

Black Knight Rises
*There will be Spoilers* I remember there was a thread a few weeks ago but I hadn't seen the movie yet so apologies if this has been done but I want to talk about the political vision in the movie.

And that doesn't affect your view of the movie, knowing that the plot, by way of known facts about the timing of the script and of OWS coming into existence, could not have been written with OWS in mind?

To be fair, I had a similar discussion with some leftie acquaintances/friends of mine. I usually am pretty sensitive to backward political themes, I just didn't get the same vibe from the movie.

Also, I don't know why DC comics would be allowed to have themselves hijacked by a rightwing agenda, since Fox News has put comics on blast for years now for being leftwing.
At first, if you read back, I didn't because I didn't think it wasn't the writing as much as the directing and and what I saw as over the top references to the Occupy movement that could have been added during filming or even after filming to give the film a more contemporary feel. But after people told me the guy I thought was hipster/occupy personified was actually a recurring character, yes, I admitted I was probably mistaken.

My interest in the different portrayal as prisoners remains however.

And damn it, the wife nixed going at the last minute. She's still upset about that stupid mother fucker in Aurora CO. She blames the movie for some whack job. Then again she also thinks Elvis and Michael Jackson are still alive and just in hiding because "they had no privacy". Guess I'll have to take off early one day and go see an afternoon showing.
@Draug - there have been a few copycats too....well, at least with bringing rifles into movie theaters. No deaths.

But my slant on this is that the Batman series, on the whole, leans slightly to the right. But its not slapping you right in the face with it, so I don't mind. I mean, in Dark Knight he goes to Taiwan and captures that banker and deposits him in Gotham with nary a legal question. Not to mention the gaping plot hole where the entire Russian ballet damn well knew that he wasn't on a private yacht for a weekend...as well as the pilot of the plane that picked him up. But I digress.

With Dark Knight Rises, the scene I only really didn't like was the cops charging into the machine guns. Now I understand its like 4,000 cops doing it at least against a maybe a little more than a hundred "henchmen" but come on.

On the whole issue discussed on prisoners breaking out with weapons. If you were in that prison and saw everyone let loose, with some *known killers* grabbing assault weapons, wouldn't you want to grab one yourself for safety?

Also, another thing that irked me. Why didn't Bane just leave the cops down there to die?
I thought Bane was an incredible villain. The villains in the series were played very well by the actors. It could have been easy casting Bane as a rampaging roid head but the part was underplayed in a way that made it even more sinister.

SC,

OK, sorry. I missed where you said you might be wrong, but I'll take your word for it. Your post seemed oversensitive to me, but maybe I'm just oversensitive (it's been established on another thread that I am, or may be, or possibly am not). Perhaps you are not, in which case, I apologize.

Yes, take semck with a grain of salt. Just look at those eyes! And that goofy grin? I tell ya, that 83 face is one I don't trust. ;)
@SC - no doubt this was the best Bane of all the Batmans. Maybe it was the voice that did it for me lol

International Power
It's no secret that Mitt Romney and the Republican party (for ages) has tried to establish its international power through hardnosed delegation, but is that even necessary?

Live world game
Would anyone on the site be interested in playing a live game of world diplomacy? Ive never been in a live version of the variant but I think it would be very exciting and much better than an average live game, I understand it could probably take a lot longer to play than usual live games to but just want to see if members of the site are up for playing one?
