the great thing about Psychology is that there are some universal truths to people and how they act and think, while we all like to think we are individuals and think differently etc, you would be surprised how many people can be influenced into situations without their knowing it... or more to the point, believing it was their idea in the first place.
there was a class at one of the universities in the USA where the students decided to see how well they could manipulate their Psychology professor, their Psych professor apparently liked to use jokes and humour (Australian... get over it) to teach, so as a group they decide that when he was on the right hand side of the lecture theater they would laugh at his jokes, the further to the right, the louder and harder they would laugh and when on the left side they wouldn't laugh, by the end of the first week he had not only started only standing on the right hand side of the lecture theater, but he had moved his desk against the right wall.
another situation, a Psych prof at a different Uni got his students to compliment any woman wearing a red piece of clothing, but make no reference to the piece of red clothing in anyway, withing two weeks over 95% of the female student on campus were wearing red everyday without any real thought as to why.
so psychology isn't just used to read people, it's used to influence people.
