Any interest in a 12 hour phase World diplomacy game with Public Press?
I think it would be fascinating. I think public messaging makes things more complicated. Also, you would see everything in the open. Would make it harder to multi... no?

Leader of the official opposition in Ottawa and of the New Democratic Party, Jack passed away yesterday, losing his fight to cancer.
It's a sad day for Canada, as he was one of the very few passionate voices in Parliament.

About live games
If the people who joined a live game don't show up, it is the right thing to do, to cancel or draw the game, is not it?
So, today's question is: what is the appropriate name for those who refuse to and, enjoying an unfair advantage achieve an unearned win?
I personally would go with "douchebags".

That the number of CD players has skyrocketed the past few days. There went from being about 100 open games to nearly 140. Are there a lot of multi's being banned or are people just leaving games as soon as they get in a tight spot?

Just to be clear on the rules
Can two units of your own completely switch places without bumping? For example, you've got an army in Norway and a fleet in Sweden... can you order the fleet to Norway and the army to Sweden without them bumping or are they going to bump?

Do conservatives make better Diplomacy players?
One would think so. A certain amount of ruthlessness is needed, so does having a "me first" political ideology give one a heads up in that area?

Alternatively, are liberals more successful at forcing a draw in WTA? By the same token, one could assume that they would be more successful at sacrificing their own potential for the greater good. Thoughts?

(dang, failed my own question!)

Here goes...
E.g. What is the next number in this series: 3 - 6 - 9 - 6 -15 - ....?

a) 21
b) 9
c) 6
d) 3

checkout the big brain on spyman! :D

what's the number after 21 ?
fiedler (1293 D)
22 Aug 11 UTC
Oh nevermind, you get the idea. (I should focus on 1 thing at a time)

Yeh, so it's just as simple as 6 being every second number. Really simple - if you know how. Or if you're an einstein like spyman!

The problem with number series is their narrower focus. When I had a talk with a guy who prepares IQ for his university research, he said the single most efficient kind of IQ test is that picture pattern matching like when you have 8 boxes with certain shapes and have to fill the last one. That test reflects what he called general intelligence the best.
fiedler (1293 D)
22 Aug 11 UTC
@ulytau - I love those questions. But 100 of those in a row would make you cross-eyed, so I can see why they throw in others. I kick-ass at those "Jack has 3 tomatoes and Jane has 2 bananas" questions. And the "are all fuzzies wozzies?" - those are easy.

But to get back to Draugnaurs point. You CAN study for these tests and significantly improve 'your IQ'.
spyman (424 D(G))

"well religious views does effect diplomacy. Cause generally speaking Athiests and Agnostics are (on average) smarter then Christians, and, in a game like diplomacy, intelligence does help."

It would be interesting to know average GR of theists versus non-theists of players on this site. Which group do we think would have the higher GR?
ulytau (541 D)
22 Aug 11 UTC
After I talked to him, I took 36 of those in a row and completed only 30 of those because I ran out of time. All my solutions were correct and since it was only a part of a complex personal analysis, it would be stupid to simply tip the last six just as cheating would be. I'm apparently a thorough worker ;) Some of those were really nasty though, the guy said only 1 person ever solved all 36 problems.

It's true that you can practise for those tests but what's the point? You do them for yourself, to find out about your mental capabilities, not to run around screaming your score.
Scmoo472 (1933 D)
22 Aug 11 UTC
Actually Spyman didn't answer your question correct. The real answer should have been C. You said that 6 is every other number. So that would be the next number in the series..
Just sayin'. :P
fiedler (1293 D)
22 Aug 11 UTC
@Scmoo - yeh he did! You should have gone to specsavers.

@ulytau - the point is how valid are IQ tests as a measure of your 'natural' capabilities, if practise and study can significantly increase the score?
I never said anything about "run around screaming your score". Those are your issues ;P

@spyman - I would back the theists. Dunno why.
spyman (424 D(G))
22 Aug 11 UTC
I think it would be about equal on this site. But I wonder though. I can see how in some places the atheist would be brighter on average. My reasoning is this: if you grew somewhere where the predominant view was strongly theistic you would need a compelling reason to go against the grain -- to choose reason over faith.

I wonder also who have the higher GR on average - conservatives or liberals.
(We don't need IQ tests we have GR)
ulytau (541 D)
22 Aug 11 UTC
That's the reason why I didn't say a word about natural capabilities ;) While I think one's upper limit of potential is hard-wired genetically, you have to train your brain to develop that potential. The problem is that training specifically for IQ tests only makes you better at filling out IQ tests, not more sharp-thinking, and inflates your score and therefore conceals whatever information one could dig from your results whereas solving all kinds of real-life problems that require different approaches and cognitive skills surely won't hurt in making you an all-round better thinker. The tests are supposed to reflect your capabilities right now, not something you were born with. If two identically born persons took the same test, their scores would be different because of the lives their lived and that's perfectly reasonable.

@ Tantris

A study using brain scans (not the most reliable area of science) of 90 people (a rather small number to draw any significant conclusions from at the best of times) that has been run through the mangle of the media? The word "bunk" springs to mind :p.

As far as IQ tests go, methinks that after the significant jump from most people's first ever attempt to perhaps their 3rd or 4th effort it pretty much evens out and provides a highly accurate measure of one's ability to complete pointless puzzles. When the founders of MENSA decided on IQ tests to select intelligent people for their dating agency, they didn't want to just let anyone in. The vast majority could only pass them via a fluke.
spyman (424 D(G))
22 Aug 11 UTC
Mensa is dating agency? That is hilarious. Makes sense.
Octavious (2701 D)
22 Aug 11 UTC
Well... more or less. The inspiration for the organisation was that one of the founders was extremly upset that his highly intelligent sister had a lot of trouble finding a man. She had fairly good looks, but whenever blokes realised that she was a lot smarter than they were, it was a bit of a turn off and they scarpered. In desperation, the high IQ society was born.
fiedler (1293 D)
22 Aug 11 UTC
@ulytau - ok fair point. I'm covered either way by scoring quite well on these things. (nyah-nyah!) Although I don't "max them out" like draugnaur.

@Octavious - pffft MENSA! I prefer the Mega Society. I would apply but I'm real busy.
fiedler (1293 D)
22 Aug 11 UTC
Has anyone here been a member of a high-IQ-society? And did you get a hook-up from it?
ulytau (541 D)
22 Aug 11 UTC
You're mean, fiedler. *sobs* The next time I attend the Mensa board games convention, I'll tell those few hitmen there to beat you up.
fiedler (1293 D)
22 Aug 11 UTC
Mensa hitmen! That would be awesome. I'm thinking Tom Cruise from Collateral, John Cusack from Grosse Pointe Blanc, Anton Chugir, and Death from the Seven Seal, maybe TOm Ripley. Some interesting people in Mensa.

On the question of theists, I know of 2 ministers who play on this site, and both are good. One was a GR top-10 before dropping off the list due to inactivity. Don't underestimate the value of interpersonal skills - gaining trust is often worth more than tactical skills in this game.
Tantris (2456 D)
22 Aug 11 UTC
@Octavious:
You are just scared that it may be true, it frightens you and makes you want to fight/flight. For my part, I think it probably is a lot more complex than they are making it out to be. I mean, everyone is made up of a lot of different characteristics, and honestly, correlation doesn't mean causation. Anyone can rise above their genetics, but then perhaps the choice to rise above would change the layout of the brain chemistry. I guess, what I am trying to say, is that we would need to do a lot more studying to get anything more concrete...but it is interesting, nonetheless.
Tantris (2456 D)
22 Aug 11 UTC
@coffeebean:
Just because they are ministers, doesn't necessarily mean they are theists. Don't stereotype people like that...
Draugnar (0 DX)
22 Aug 11 UTC
@fiedler - I'm a (dues lapsed) MENSA member. And honestly. The online IQ tests max at 145-155. Get 'em all correct and you are a 152 IQ. Miss one and it's a 147 IQ. And most people I know in social and work circles (definitely work circles) can get very high scores on them (upper 130s and 140s) and a few of my friends and I like to "speed exam" any new ones we find. The goal: get a perfect score in the fastest time possible.
Draugnar (0 DX)
22 Aug 11 UTC
A look at the list of MENSA celebrity members reveals MENSA has either lowered their standards or started accepting bribes. If Mr. high schhol dropout/"I know psychology"/Scientology Cruise can be on it, then I'm glad I stopped paying dues. Sorry, but Tom Cruise's elevator barely makes it out of the basement.
