Limbaugh was on record saying the only reason Donovan McNabb was heralded in the NFL was because he thought the NFL had an agenda to push with "a black QB..it's a PR thing."

Not that McNabb was talented, he said he ONLY got the attention because he was black, and referred to him negatively.

He's used racial slurs before.

He's backed up OTHERS who have used racial slurs before.

And he played this song over...and over...and over...and played it while criticizing Obama--thus giving the song and Obama a negative connotation--and made this LATEST "oreo" slur.

I have to give Rush Limbaugh a bit of a pass because of the way he handled "My City Was Gone" when Chrissy Hynde called him on the carpet over it. A lot of things he says are taken out of context, I remember the whole thing with the Harlem restaurant he went to where he was trying to make a point about it being inseparable from any other nice restaurant, but if you went through parsing it, you could make him sound pretty racist.

I don't agree with him, but as a talk radio personality, it's his job to be controversial and edgy, and all of them veer into offensive domain in order to get their names out there.

And, as I recall, hey, since Obi gets to plain recall, I can too, with McNabb his statement was along the lines of saying the NFL wanted a black quarterback to succeed. Which...they did. I mean, you can't argue that. It had long been a criticism of the sport that most blacks who played QB in HS/college ended up being turned into WR's in the pro's, and that teams wouldn't put a black man behind center for racism reasons.

I think you're reading too much into it. I believe the statement was that the NFL wanted a black quarterback to succeed, and I don't know how you can possibly deny that. Granted, Doug Williams had already done well, and Warren Moon, but both of them were outliers.

And, again, by itself, we could get past it--everyone slips up now and again...I like David Letterman, and while I found his Palin's daughter/A-Rod joke funny, I can see how a lot of folks got upset, and he apologized, and all was forgiven--mostly--and he moved on.

But Limbaugh doesn't do that.

He doesn't just make one mistake, he makes it--McNabb--and makes it again--playing "Barack the Magic Negro" over and over...and I'm sorry, pardoy or not, use that word in that context and you're asking for trouble--and the "oreo" slur...

I think Peyton and Eli are both overrated. Peyton is on his way out and Eli never got that break he needed. Those two are just about done.

Eli's overrated because of the name...but not too badly so, he IS a good QB, just not as good as Peyton; the name almost hurts him, actually...if his last name wasn't "Manning" and he didn't have to live up to a Pro-Bowl father and a SB-winning, Top-10-QB-Ever brother in Peyton, he might be regarded better.

If it's okay to discuss the external factors associated with people's perceptions and desires for Eli Manning to do well, why is it not okay to do that with Donovan McNabb?

TThere is a huge difference between those extrnal factors.

"Eli's only thought to be elite because he's a Manning" is far different from "Donovan's only thought to be elite because he's black."

One is a familial comparison--no harm there.

The other is a comparison based on race--which is skating on thin ice.

It isn't the McNabb thing that makes Limbaugh a racist per se, everyone makes a msitake.

It's that instance and the OTHERS he's committed, like the one's I just mentioned...

Towards the top, you'll see racist comments attributed to him that cannot be sourced. Towards the bottom, you'll see a few instances of him apologizing. And in the McNabb scenario, he resigned rather than was fired.

I disagree that there's a difference between those two external factors. They both related to ancestry and the desire for someone of that ancestry to be elite. I don't AGREE with Rush on it, I think McNabb was a fine quarterback at his best, but I don't think of it as a racist statement. He wasn't commenting on the general ability of blacks in any sense, but the specific abilities of Donovan McNabb and the reasons people wanted him to succeed. Remember when it was pointed out that blacks never won the major Oscars and that very year both Denzel Washington and Halle Berry won? Lots of people saw that as a PR thing, but I don't remember them getting branded as racist.
