To me, there's two camps:

Camp one: The people that don't want to play with people with high resign rates.

Camp two: The people that have high resign rates.

Camp one will never understand camp two. Camp two will never understand camp one. I don't know why we don't just accept that it's the way it is and go about our business, there's mechanisms to allow both camps to play and enjoy the game (just rarely with each other). For the record, I never vet games for resign rates, so I'm in the "meh whatever" camp, but it does bug me when people do resign.

If a game is cancelled following a resignation it does nt affect the culprit's resign percentage. Therefore someone with a poor record is likely, in reality, to have something appreciably worse.

One easy way to deal with this is to play in multiple games with long deadlines. So what if one or two are stalled? You've got ten more, and you won't miss any deadlines if you lose interwebs.

I'm in the middle... Mine is high to me and plenty of people in Camp 1. Camp 2 resignation rates aren't close to mine. I read 2% from camp 1 so my 4% (2 games) is high.

I believe the structure of the resigned games is also important.

Some players resign only during live games, so I will play longer-phased games with them.

Some might've few resigns from their beginnings on this site, maybe they got into few games, decided the game sucks and simply left. Not an example in sportsmanship but if these were the only resigns, it's history and it doesn't matter.

Some might've all resigns clustered into one particular time period, which might be reasonably explained and forgiven.

The biggest alert signs are resigns from longer-phased games from wildly different dates. This requires plenty of good will to accept and will seldom pay off.

Darn, just looked at my resign percentage and it's really high. =( 11%. However, those are the only 2 live games I've ever played, and I haven't played after that cause I realized the weren't for me. Hopefully that doesn't discourage people!! I guess I should play more games then. Don't really have time for that either though. Bah.
