Looking for a sitter
I will be away all weekends from now on so I can't constantly ask for a 3 day pause. So I'm looking for a sitter.
I'm in two games. one wta game with high pot (700+D), in which I'm almost defeated and a C1 summer league game (doing well there).
Anyone interested?

Martial law in the deep south?
Rumor mill speculates a forcible evacuation from the gulf coast.
Normally I dismiss martial law rumors pretty quick, but given the toxicity of the water, beaches, and even air from texas to florida (some symptoms of corexit (sp) poisoning as far north as N carolina (unverified) I think this is a real possibility
What do you think?

The Tales Today That Will Be Classic Legends Tomorrow
We look into the past in the West and see a lot of heroes and stories and mythologies that still are important to us today. The Epic Of Gilgamesh. The Old Testament of Adam and Eve, David, Moses. The Iliad, Oddysey, and Aeneid. The Oedipus Cycle. The New Testament and The Story of Jesus. The Arthurian Legend. The Arabian Knights. Robin Hood. We have so many franchises and stories and sagas today- which ones will be/should be remembered and revered as classics in the centuries to come?

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Science vs. Ethics: What's Wrong With
It's the tale as old as time, "scientific progress" vs. "what's right." On the one hand, we have stem cells and other such biological and engineering works that could potentially improve life for mankind drastically, cure diseases, make man stronger, more versatile...man can literally improve his design. But then you have the other side, and the powerful question, "Who are WE to play God and alter such things?" Should we be afraid of "playing God?" Is there a line? If so, what?

Illegal immigration and drugs.
One of the main reasons why Republicans want to build a border fence is because of all the drugs illegal immigrants are bringing in, and when they do, they generally trample upon the land close to the border. (Continued)

Thoughts on Determinism.
I am a firm believer in hard determinism, and my beliefs in determinism (and cyclic universe theory) lead me to believe that god does not exist, not vice versa. I assume that there are quite a few people on this site that aren't determinists, so who is willing to argue with me?

How did you first learn about Diplomacy?
One of my History teachers in middle school had our whole class play it. I think we were making two moves a week or so, and his plan was to actually grade us on how well we did. I was Germany and was kicking ass... until someone snuck into the classroom one day after school was out and knocked over all the pieces. Our teacher hadn't written down the positions so the game just ended. It was lame, but some friends and I started playing on our own.

But isn't the beauty of diplomacy that all the orders leave a paper trail(orders), so you can figure out where every unit was?

My first experience with diplomacy was an after-school wargames club, where we played Axis & Allies, Diplomacy, and the like. I believe I'm the only person in the history of the club to actually win a game of dip, too. Heard about this site from a friend from said club, StevenC. But I heard he left. Ah, well.
I was just reading about board games and came across Diplomacy, I thounght it looked cool so I found a place to play it online.
I'm sure the board could have been recreated, but I'm guessing the teacher just used it as an excuse to end the game -- a lot of the students weren't very good at the game and weren't too keen on the idea of getting a grade for playing it poorly.

Honestly, I'd already written down the positions before somebody knocked over the pieces. But I didn't exactly want to volunteer that information, as I was already considered kind of a nerd, so I just let it slide and began playing with friends.

My dad had a board (from his college days) and taught my brother and I how to play it. The two of us used the play the two player variant and I consistently got my butt kicked. I took the board when I went to college, taught a bunch of friends to play, and started playing by e-mail. Played a few games that way and found my way here.

Trying to convince my brother to join up and play...

Like Onar, I started in what we called ConSim (for Conflict Simulation). We'd play Dip and minatures and A&A and a variety of other games. It was run by the military history teacher, a Vietnam Vet who clearly had some remaining issues from his days as an intel photographer riding in unarmed (but escorted) helicopters over VietCong territory. He talked of crapping his pants one day when one of his escorts (a couple of Cobras) suddenly did a midair turn on a dime, accelerated and dove, firing his missiles right under his OH-6A . Turns out an enemy craft had been hiding below and had snuck up on them.

My dad had played it with a university prof when he was in university, and randomly one day bought a set on e-bay. But he never played it, so I took it and played the game with some friends of mine. It got mixed reviews from my friends ("It's totally unbalanced!" "Being Germany is impossible" "I lost therefore the game sucks *whine*") But I liked it, and began playing online.

Older brother tried to teach me to play when I was too young to really be able to play. I really liked the idea of no dice or chance and everyone submitting orders at the same time. Then when I started at my current company 15 years ago there were others that played by email internally and I got in on it and loved it as much as I expected. We only played a few games and I didn't really get going until I found this site.

Someone produced if at a school war-games club 30+ years ago. I still remember being stabbed by my best friend! But it fit me hooked. After first game I had a hex version of map inside my school folder with unit counters held on by blu-tack. Then a long pause until I discovered online Diplomacy about 10 years ago. Since then I have taught it to my son and his friends. Oh how I laughed as I watched kids experience being stabbed for the first time. The circle is complete.

I thought it looked pretty interesting and he ended up teaching me how to play Now the circle is complete (backwards!)

My friends and I used our teacher's board in WHAP when we had a free day. After we learned, we found this site and have been playing since May!
I played a FtF game at GenCon about 25 years ago. I signed up for PbM Diplomacy (2 weeks per turn) while I was there. The PbM-GM had a stamp with red ink which he used on each envelope - it was the outline image of a man with a knife being plunged into his back!
