What did you guys want to be when you grew up.
I'm not an adult yet, and I still am unsure about what job I want. I used the Holland personality codes, and I'm an IES, which suggests pharmacist, but that doesn't particularly appeal to me. Some other jobs it says I might be good at are physician, actuary, and training manager. Of those, actuary and training manager look the most intersting. But this isn't just about me. What dod you guys want to be when you grew up?

Disband instead of retreat
My understanding of the rules of the game were that you were allowed to simply disband a unit instead of retreating it. Is this also true of webdiplomacy? When the retreat round comes will my pull down menu offer a disband option?

Anyone live within a few hours of Gainsville, FL?
If you are interested in a Face-to-Face game, there is an avid Dip player who wants to try to organize sme ftf games in FL. I personally live a few hours away, but we find the 3-4 other players we need, it'd be worth trying to organize a game. write inside if you want to play or live close enough.

I am so SICK of the Gaga Person!
She's an unoriginal hackjob with no talent except to gratify others through the basest of all techniques (in other words, she'd make Hugh Hefner pretty happy) and for getting her name out with scandals that flood the Web and take away from the important news (Arizona's immigration law? BP Oil Spill? The Economy?)

How do you feel about this...person (and THIS pisses me off): http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/stopthepresses/220323/lady-gaga-photo-irks-beatles-fans/

Purpose of "... 1 hours"
Does anyone know why we have to option to have phases that are "1 days, 1 hours" or "2 days, 1 hours"? I'm just curious why we have that option?

Corrupt a Wish
The first person makes a positive wish, and the next person plays the role of the djinn granting the wish, and then turning it into a disaster. The second person then makes the next wish, and the cycle repeats itself.

@KaptinKool - I have read Friedman, Hayek and Keynes. I can quote from the first two. I'd be happy to create a separate thread about this for more detailed exposition.

I wish I could pronounce 'abgemacht'.
ava2790 (232 D(S))
14 Jul 10 UTC
@abgemacht: but what about subsystems of second order arithmetic (developed in the nineties) which aims to address paradoxes inherent in set theory - a purely metamathenatical objective...or category theory which is supposed to be the next set theory? Or how about the concept of Kolmogorov space which has no purpose but to be a theoretical example that only lives in pure maths papers?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
14 Jul 10 UTC
I'm not sure how to respond to that, really...

Just because all new math doesn't have an immediate use doesn't mean that a) no new math does and b) it never will.
ava2790 (232 D(S))

A perfectly good response! I am just a little miffed by some of the material I've been coming across recently.
jodabomb24 (100 D)
15 Jul 10 UTC
@abgemacht Group theory can be very confusing at times, but it can be very useful and applied in many circumstances. I don't know specifically about the others, but group theory is useful.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@jod

I agree. Group Theory was one of my examples : )
ava2790 (232 D(S))
15 Jul 10 UTC
Look guys. The level of abstraction with groups is acceptable for me. But the level of abstraction with homotopy groups? And homeomorphism groups? That's just a kinda pointless (if somewhat interesting) level of theoretical abstraction.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
15 Jul 10 UTC
Again, I have to disagree.

Since you mentioned it, homeomorphism is incredibly important. It is required for a number of things in cryptography to work.

I can understand that many things seem pointless in mathematics, but more often than not, they allow other things in math to work. In math, everything is built upon everything else.
ava2790 (232 D(S))

An excellent point, and one that I hadn't previously noted. Perhaps this is because the theoretical economics I study mostly uses various functional analytical concepts and is a little more divorced from algebraic topology. I've done a little bit of computability theory in the past few weeks. Some work with Konig's lemma (and WKL, WKLn, etc). It was fascinating.
jodabomb24 (100 D)

I read something in a book recently, about a person who invented a topological representation of evolution. It was very interesting.

@rlumley

Do you actually dislike MATLAB, or were you just being difficult?
ava2790 (232 D(S))
15 Jul 10 UTC
@jodabomb24 - The biological sciences use a lot of functional analysis and non linear dynamics, the predator-prey equation system being the most famous example. As far as evolution is considered, there is a branch of theoretical computer science that works with the omega^omega space (the space of infinite trees with infinitely many branches numbered 1 thru infinity at infinitely many nodes). This is very much a topological space and so I can see where you could go with that. From this point of you, the theorems mentioned above (Konig's lemma, WKL, WKLn, which are statements about the trees themselves, are equivalent to the axiom of choice, compactness theorems, etc in topology).

Face To Face Tips
I play my first ever face to face diplomacy game in tournament play against some old toughies this weekend. It is expected to take 5-9 hours. Barring the marathon aspect (I'm fairly used to about 5 hour live games online), any tips from ftf veterans on this site?

A'holes leaving the game?
I just had a game where a person left the game for no apparent reason other than it looked like they may not win. This really throws off a game. First, how and why can a person do this? Second, is there a way to flag them or block them from games so they can't keep doing it to you?

Facebook diplomacy - any devs out there?
Hey, I'm a mod on the facebook app for diplomacy, but the person who set me up (and presumably has higher-level access) has gone incommunicado.

There are some problems with the forum and profiles and I wonder if the database needs a clear-out. Can anyone over here work on the facebook app, or is it totally stranded now?
