Hidden WebDiplomacy Site is found!

So apparently there has been a Webdiplomacy site with 30 different variants, that's right 30! It has many maps that are just bizarre but at the same time look amusing. There is one called 'Chaos' that has the classical Diplomacy map but there are 34 countries on it that only have one supply center each! Another one is a variant of the classic map that has the ability to build on any supply center not just the home supply centers!

Renaissance Variant to be added?

This variant uses "vanilla" diplomacy map, but different powers and starting locations.

Found this while browsing the JDip files. Uses the same map as normal diplomacy except that Switzerland is passable. The nations and their starting positions are changed as well.

Spain: Fleet Naples, Fleet Spain, Army Portugal
Holy Roman Empire: Fleet Berlin, Army Munich, Army Vienna
Poland: Army Warsaw, Army St. Petersburg, Fleet Sevastapol
Venice: Army Venice, Army Trieste, Fleet Greece
England: Army Liverpool, Fleet London, Fleet Brest
France: Army Paris, Army Marseilles, Fleet Belgium
Turkey: Army Constantinople, Army Ankara, Fleet Bulgaria (nc), Fleet Smyrna

According to the variant description, this new set up leads to far bloodier combat far sooner. One gameplay shift I noticed is that the Bulkan "knot" will be more sorely contested, while easier gains can be found in Northern Europe.

If its based on the standard map it would be very easy to write up into webDip format - you can find what is almost a tutorial on the dev forum

I think that's as close as you're going to get without changing anything. Sounds fairly accurate. Then again I think the best renaissance map would be one where the SC locations were moved, and probably a few less of them altogether. For example, instead of an SC in Rome, put it in Tuscany to show the influence of Florence. Get rid of an SC in Russia and one in England to show that they were of less value than the continent during that period.

If it is Renaissance Diplomacy, shouldn't there be a Sweden in control of the Baltic and shouldn't Turkey control Serbia, Budapest, Rumania and Sevastopol? Then Poland, HRE, Venice and Spain would have to join together.

Spain should get Belgium and Holland, too. Maybe a neutral army in Edinburgh?

Extra SCs in Tuscany, Piedmont and Bohemia? Plus Galicia, now Krakow?

@gopher : If it was historicaly accurate England wouldn't have Brest. (And if the standart game was hitoricaly accurate Belgium wouldn't be adjacent with the Channel, but France would be adjacent to North See). But of course that map is not very accurate and we enjoy the game the way it is.

At least they didn't set the map in the early 1500s when Charles V was still around. How many SCs would he control?

I'm thinking a start date somewhere in the late 14th/early 15th centuries was intended. England did indeed control Brest (Brittany) off and on during the Hundred Years' War. If England gets Brest, though, France ought to get Edinburgh (reflecting the historical Franco-Scottish alliance). However, Venice should not be controlling Greece - it should be neutral (the Latin duchies torn from the Byzantine Empire were all lost to the West by the time of the Hundred Years' War, I believe). Also, I don't think Sevastopol was under Polish control ever - but changing that would essentially give Turkey the game (unless Tamerlane or the Safavids can somehow be added to the game)

I didn't see the Hundred year' as part of the Renaissance since, the movement reached France later, that is why I said Brittany wasn't controlled by England. (I was told the Renaissance began after the Hundred Years'.)

Btw during the Hundred Years Spain was still involved in its Reconquista.

I thought Tamerlane helped the Ottomans. My history may be wrong, but I thought he destroyed Baghdad and then decided to fight the Mamelukes first. He destroyed them, and as he turned on the Turks, Isfahan and Georgia rebelled and he had to go subdue them again and then he died. As a result, the Ottomans were left as the only power in the Middle East.

Poland did not reach Sevastopol, but they did rule the Ukraine and almost reached the Black Sea. Never got as far North as St. Pet though. Definitely had Livonia.

I think of 1500 as still being the Renaissance.

By my arrangements, you would play France the way Francois did.....invade Italy and gain SCs.

You would end up with a Franco-Turkish alliance against HRE, Spain and Venice. With Poland fighting Sweden and Turkey and Sweden fighting HRE and Poland. England against Spain and France would be interesting, too.

I'd give France no fleets and no coastal SCs in the North. Spain could have a fleet in Belgium and an army in Holland.
