New Variant Question:
I just started a Ancient Med variant and we just finished our first year. But something seems odd about the map, it looks like it is giving people all of the territories that they occupied in Spring as well (not SC's but territories).

Speedy gunboat game, anyone?
Anybody interested in a five-minute-turn anonymous gunboat game? There was one that just flopped but I'd really like to give it a go.

New Order Request for the World Map
In addition to Draw, Pause, and Cancel, can we please have a little order button that says something like Finalize your Damn Moves, This is a Gunboat Game and You Have No Reason to Not Finalize! ? I think it'd really improve the game for everyone.

Should I be concerned?
I'm in a game that's in 1903 where neither England, France, or Germany have attacked each other. All three are also in another game together. Is this cause for suspicion for Meta-Gaming? Has anyone else seen this before? Here's the link:

Star Trek 2012- Four Old Captains Want In!
Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Kate Mulgrew, and Scott Bakula ALL have said they'd like a role in Trek 12. Who would you like to see- Shatner Kirk come back, Stewart's Picard come back from Nero's time to save Data/Kirk, Mulgrew's Janeway... uh... or Bakula's Archer look confused some more? ;) ("I hate Trek 11!" comments NOT welcome... have fun, folks!)

Is this cheating?
If 2 or more people know each and join a non-anon game is it considered cheating for them to work together until all the other players are destroyed and then draw the game?
Is it just lame or cheating?

Improving the World-Map
I'd like to make a more balanced World-map, so I'm asking here what to change on the current map. I'll apply all the changes to the map and we can get some test-games on my server to improve the map even more.
So post your suggestions.

europe is a bit unbalanced

In what way?

Flashman had some issues with China being a little too close to various centres, and to be honest, the Arctic Circle could do with being split into two.

Yeah, looking at the map, I think Lanzhou is a bit of a strange territory for China..maybe splitting it in two?

I think the Arctic Circle the way it is is alright...it geographically makes sense to be that large.

But I think Frozen is at a bit of a disadvantage in the Antarctic, as OZ and South Africa will be eager to eat him up quite quickly....
jbalcorn (429 D)

Europe is essentially stuck on a penninsula. If it's going to be a fleet power, it needs to be able to set up in the Med, but it can't actually guarantee a move to the Med.
Braveheart (2408 D(S))

My experience of playing Europe you are basically completely screwed if you bounce in the Med - and if you do get in the Med you are able to extend a ridiculously large influence on events in North Africa. I'd suggest perhaps cutting it in two. Also add ability for Germany to move directly to Scandinavia to make things interesting in year 1 with Russia.
Stukus (2126 D)

I know a lot of people complain about all the -stans above India that give it two years of defense before anyone can actually invade it from the North.
Emperor Ming (0 DX)

To comment on guy~~'s post, the situation with OZ and Frozen is pretty awful. One sea space between them accesses a total of 4 home territories. And I don't know if this bothers anyone else, but the Antarctic circle houses 7 SC's, while all of Western Europe has 5. Does that make sense?

Also, I think the sea spaces are too vast. Typically, one sea space can access tons of land area.
guy~~ (3779 D(B))
23 Feb 10 UTC
Is the Antarctic continent the way it is even necessary? Can't you perhaps turn it into 1 or 2 territories, maybe 1 SC? It doesn't make sense being so vast with so many territories....

Russia needs to be able to build a fleet in Moscow. Otherwise, once Near East gets into Armenia, it is almost impossible to get them out. Or Ukraine needs to border Armenia. 1 of the 2.
Sleepcap (100 D)

If I should change something on the map I need specific instructions what and why to change.
It's not just splitting a territory in to, it's also HOW to split them and how to name the new territories (best with a picture). Also there is still some more discussion needed.
flashman (2274 D(G))
25 Feb 10 UTC
Okay:

a) split Lan north south to form Lan in the east half and Shangrila in the West. Shangrila should border Burma and Inner Mongolia. That gives China the one move breathing space it needs to become a reasonably functional country.

I am still looking at the empty 'stans' problem north of India.

However, I would propose removing the SC from the Antarctic itself and putting it somewhere else - Seychelles, Diego Garcia...?
flashman (2274 D(G))
25 Feb 10 UTC
Er... My error.

That should read: Lan in the West and Shangrila in the East, with Shangrila bordering both Inner Mongolia and Burma.

The Antarctic situation is pretty ridiculous. I've looked up several of the so-called 'SCs' online and they are nothing more than a few shacks sitting on the ice. Nothing that looks like it's on par with a whole country, or that can give you an army build.

Also, when it comes to the size of the sea-spaces, it gives naval countries too much defensive power from intercontinental invasions as it's very hard to occupy a space like EAO or WAO and then keep it from being dislodged while you convoy an army onto the coast. Also the Pacific is far too large - any trans-pacific attack can be seen coming from the other side a whole year in advance, which gives too much preparation time to the powers on the receiving end. I'd say, take Antarctica off the map, and replace it with a 3-SC power somewhere in the Pacific.

Haven't I heard that Madagascar is a "secret" SC? If so, it should be marked as such.
flashman (2274 D(G))
25 Feb 10 UTC
It is currently an unmarked SC...

Perhaps we should have one random secret SC that moves around each time a new game is started...

Mad. is no longer a SC. Was a programming error of the map-data.

I'd leave Arctic circle. On earth the arctic circle is probably smaller than 80% of the territories on that map.

Moscow should be able to build a fleet since it can be taken by a fleet.

Europe and the near east both seem weak.

I'd maybe consolidate some of those central asian countries.

It bothers me that there are so many spaces in antartica since like the arctic circle it is actually smaller. But the fact that there are so many SCs there could be explained by global warming this is WW9 after all.

I actually think it is almost ok. I bet most of these complaints are from people that have played only a couple times and got stomped as a particular country. Then they go on to say that that country is imbalanced. I think it is very hard to gauge balance since diplomacy plays such a large part in who wins.

The best way to test these maps is gunboat games since that will limit the effect of diplomacy.

Are Romans Italian?
Because Thucydides would rather talk about Jersey Shore... I have moved the discussion here.

I personally think that Italians are the weak mutant offspring of Rome.

However at the same time it is the funniest and greatest show on tv..
The Situation could not even be dreamed up as a character.
What are other people's thoughts- I assume only North Americans will know what I'm talking about- but aussies don't fret it is coming MTV Australia in April
