Do you get more points if you win with more than 18 centers?
Sorry if this question has been asked a million times but I just want confirmation that supply centers over 18 do not give more of the pot (in a ppsc game, of course). Thanks!

Points for Dollars
Has anyone played games on this site where the points translated to actual dollars?
g01df1ng3r (2821 D)

Of course, such games would most likely be private and between real-life friends. Then again, maybe some online players have worked out a logistic to make it work. Just curious if anyone has done it.

Never done it, and I don't intend to, but just some ideas:

in a WTA i suppose the winner would take all the money or it would be split between players that drawn.

In PPSC it, again, would change the spirit of the game because a survival could be more lucrative than a draw, right?

I think it is "doable" but only in WTA.
To do it with people you meet online, there have to be a big amount of trust to secure payment!
But isn't trust what diplomacy is about? Or it is the other way? ;)

well with a site like this you could have the payments made to a paypal account at the start of each game, and then the site determines how much to pay out and to whom at the end of each game.

it would be an interesting variation on the game...

Tying user accounts to Paypal accounts is a nice idea, but would that bring the gambling status to the site?
tailboarder (100 D)

And a lot of other problems with it...
Ask some of the poker sites what a security nightmare they have.
Involving money makes you a target. This site is a hobby site not a gambling site. There are too many minors here and the mods do this as far as I know for free.
If you want to gamble do it in real life or go to a poker room. Find me I love to play cards. That's how I bought my house :-)

This question was asked lots of months ago, and the answer was no also that time.

I hope kestas will never allow it anyways, as it would mean this site's closure here, so I couldn't keep playing, for example.

i think the best way to do it would be to have an independent 8th person that is trustable collect all the money up front... then in the end give it to the winner(s). maybe give him/her a small cut for being the bookie...

wow... i think i just created a new business model...

i'll be the bookie ;)

If all of the money is handled elsewhere, then I don't see any reason why people couldn't use this site to play the game. But for this site to actually handle the money, or even to endorse the gambling, would cause huge legal problems.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
11 Sep 09 UTC
well, i'm not sure about the huge problems caused by gambling.

that said, it is cheap and easy enough to create a second site which ran cash games.
where the owner of said site would be the 'bookie', that may be a viable bussiness model, and while i'm capable of setting up a site like that (with Kestas's open source code) i'm not interested in investing the (~$15 dollars setup cost) nor the ongoing cost and time of running that business.

(i would expect that any such site would have a link to webdiplomacy.net for people who wanted to play games for free.)

anyway, that's my 2 cent.

Well, you can't gamble over the internet in the United States. Thank you very much, Bobby Kennedy.

I seem to remember hearing that the server for this site is in America, so Kestas would be breaking US law if there was gambling going on here. At least, I'm pretty sure he would be. It's not like Barack Obama will send the marines into Australia to catch him, but it'll be a huge headache at the very least.

It'll never happen.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

that makes me wonder about gambling laws...

i know in ireland lotteries are restricted but quiz games with a cash prize are fine, so if you ask a simple question, and charge a minimal fee to enter, paying out a large cash prize then you aren't running a lottery, even though everyone is able to answer the question and in the case of multiple answers being the same they resolve it like a lottery.

but betting is allowable. You can bet online on sports games. Anyway if you had to pay to enter a game, and there was a cash reward that's not the same as running a random lottery. (or even allowing multiple people to place bets on the result of a game) At least in the eyes of the law in certain countries.

Anyway, as i said, different site, no risk to this site; and easy to setup (assuming it has the approval from the powers-that-be here)
Diplomacy is a game of skill, not chance.
Which reminds me. Write your Senators and ask them to endorse S.B. 1597. This bill is meant to differentiate games of skill vs. games of chance from the Uniform Internet Gambling Enforcment Act.
