Moderator please help
Our game has been paused and one person has not logged on for the past 5 days. Can we get the game unpaused? or even just canceling the game would be fine.

Metagaming.
To what extant is it metagaming if you make decisions on the basis that those who suffer from your decision might decide to get you back in another game you ar playing.

Civil Disorder - Record Smearing Free?
I see a lot of games that are available to take over a country in civil disorder. However, by taking over most of them, it is giving your record a quick loss. I wish that taking over games didn't tarnish your record, for good or for bad. Thoughts?

Least irrelevant province in Diplomacy
Which province has the most impact on any game?

I think MAO, MUN, NTS, GAL, and then either WMS or IOS. Maybe we can do one of those +/- things where they get points. Anyone care to create a list of ten? We have to do that first.

adjudication question
if a unit is ordered to move can an adjacent unit of the same power support hold that unit... it would seem to me that if the move order failed then the unit would be holding in place and the support would be given...

snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.
Has anyone ever gone on to win a game of diplomacy after having been reduced to a single supply center?
If not what about after having been reduced to 2 supply centres or going on to a draw?
Anyone got stories to tell on this subject?

Diplomacy group on Jyte
I was thinking about ways to debate Diplomacy topics, when I realised jyte would be perfect for this sort of thing. The group is at http://jyte.com/groups/diplomacy .

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got to go kill myself for being too stupid to have figured this out several years ago.

Gunboat - what's the point?
Diplomacy's actual wargame elements are highly abstract, and the gameplay hinges on making and breaking alliances.

What, then, is the point of a gunboat game, with no diplomatic dealings?

how many turns does it take for a country to enter civil disorder... and do the retreat and unit placing phases count toward civil disorder if they didn't have to input any orders...

Rules Question
A tricky one?

Supposing I have taken a province in the Spring (i.e. I occupy it but I don't yet own it), If another power attacks that province with support, I will lose it.

However, if I were also to attack the province with equal support, the two attacks would bounce, but what happens to the unit in that province? Is it forced to retreat (thus leaving the province in the hands of the original owner?

The idea that I can use the unit in the province to attack and cut support elsewhere, while still defending the province with another two adjacent units.

What do you think?
djbent (2572 D(S))

yes, that's a common strategy. the unit in the province stays in place, as long as there is equal opposing force from both attacks.

DJ is 100% correct.

i kinda can't believe you're at 638 DP and hadn't experienced this (no shade intended) - just goes to show that points are not always a good measure of skill or experience.

Or it may be a very good reflection of his skill, despite his relative inexperience.

I hadn't thought of that strategy, I would always have just supported twice. I'll have to remember that.

stratagos (austria) and i (italy) show an example in autumn 1903 of this:
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=10165
(a) rum-ukr to cut any possible support at war (so austria can take it)
(a) bud-rum supported by (a) ser which counters the attack from (a) sev even when it is support by (a) ukr

Yes, but paradox's are very unlikely because they need very specific conditions, and then in those conditions it's rarely the best move!
Alderian (2425 D(S))

The key is that the two sets of units trying to move into the area both fail due to equal strength. Since no unit is successfully moving into the area, the unit currently there is not dislodged.

It can be a very key move to breaking an almost-stalement line because it allows you to cut support without risking your own center. If you have all the right pieces in the right places of course.

This is actually an extremely useful manoeuvre, it should definitely be part of your repertoire. It lets some of your units in the back get in on the action, avoids superfluous support holds, and most important can be used to cut some critical support while hanging on to territory.

OMGNSO, I think that's typically when convoys are also involved in some way. They rarely arise in normal play...
