Dead Russia refusing to unpause
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=7810
Game was paused because a dead country was banned. Russia refuses to unpause and wants a draw, although his last center was captured and his last piece was crushed during the spring moves. It is now fall, which technically means Russia is still alive, and therefore has to vote for unpause. Please unpause the game for us and while you're at it, spank Captain Tiberius.

Please unpause - country with no units banned
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=7729&msgCountry=Global
Can a mod please unpause? The player banned joined a country that had no units to move anyway.

Where do I report a multi-accounter?
One of the games I'm in is France (me) and Russia against Italy and Turkey. There was one German piece left sitting in England and has been CD for a long time.

New newbie question: NMR
If a player drops out, they default to all-hold, I get that. And eventually other people can Take over their country, I see that. My question is … how long? How many phases (if that is what matters) of NMR until the game is Joinable?

Rules question
When does a win take effect? I know that during the Autumn retreat phase a player is credited with any SCs he took during the year. Does this mean that it's impossible for a player to retreat into another's SC to prevent the win?

For example, let's say country A owns Rumania, and takes Budapest for the 18th center. Can country B retreat from Budapest into Rumania to stop the win (assuming it was a legal retreat)? Or does the "win" happen before the retreat phase?

Talking about irony sucks and it makes you look stupid.

Furthermore, everyone misunderstands what exactly irony means, and as a results looks even more stupid.

Is the GM nowt but a computer?
With a game, the GM paused all the players without a /pause input from some players. A Global enquiry as to why this was so produced no response. Was the absence of a response because the GM is in truth a computer program? What event(s) triggers the program to pause a game without a request from all players?

QUESTION!
Why does everyone on the Internet, even the decent ones, have to be so ridiculously mean?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
25 Jan 09 UTC
I would hope we're not?
SirBayer (480 D)
25 Jan 09 UTC
Hmm, I'd like to express a laugh, but no matter what punctuation mark I end it with, it sounds like I'm being sarcastic.

Dang, maybe that's why everyone on the internet is mean.

Nah, seriously. You run through all the threads, and everyone's like "hey, you're an idiot" to basically any argument, however hypocritical or stupid. Is that... necessary?
S.P.A.O. (655 D)
25 Jan 09 UTC
it is because you can't actually see the person you are talking too in face to face. It is not very difficult to insult a machine, or a group of words. With most of these people, you can't even put a face on the text.
And by the way, this thread is inviting the same rude, mean comments in question.

You are an idiot for putting this kind of thread up.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
25 Jan 09 UTC
Well, I will admit that's the case with a few of the current threads, but I've seen more interesting, logical threads on this forum than any other I've used. Over the time I've been here we've covered loads of topics, from the traditional "who would be the best diplomacy player in history" to topical issues like wars and taxes.
If you have an interesting topic to discuss, start a thread and I'm sure you'll collect rather more enlightening posts than are visible at the moment. Obviously people don't always agree, but in the good debate threads things are generally very polite.
Thinking about it, the main reason there aren't many interesting threads around is it's sunday evening. Most of these are little questions or requests from over the weekend. When people are back at work I would expect the quality of messages to go up a bit.

SirBayer (480 D)
26 Jan 09 UTC
I can't tell if S.P.A.O. is trying to be funny or not. XD

I like Friendly Sword's answer. It really does explain a lot.

And Figlesquidge, I actually was aware of that. This is sort of meant to incite silly responses, since that's precisely the sort of response you'll always get from me. And it's enlightening. When I need help, I look for Figlesquidge. Went I want useless, entertaining answers, I look for Friendly Sword. And when I want atrocious spelling and terrible, terrible arguments that may or may not be sarcastic, I look for Curly Fries.

This was a brilliant idea, you see?

I absolutely planned this before I started the thread >_>

There is more than one reason why people are rude, abusive, insensitive, defamatory etc, etc, on the internet. But I'd hazard to guess that it comes down to two basic reasons.

1. They are anonymous so they don't have to worry about any
awkward reprecussions of a physical nature. They're allowed
to express how they actually feel about a topic or person and
still keep all their teeth. So it works well for them.

2. And why do they feel the urge to vent such hostility? I think it's because in the average persons daily life they have to take a lot of crap from a lot of people. Teachers, bosses, cops, spouses, parents, siblings, etc. At the end of the day quite a lot of resentment could be built up. Chat rooms and message boards seem to be a perfect outlet for releasing all that stress and pent up anger.
SirBayer (480 D)

Yes. Yes, I know that.

A good thing to do is ignore much of what is said. Respond to those comments that merit a response - that contribute to the discourse. Ignore those that do not. The jokers really have a short attention span anyway. Whether it is positive or negative, they desperately need your attention to exist.
SirBayer (480 D)
26 Jan 09 UTC
Which, by the way, leads me to a question.

Are you paying attention to me, Clark? >_>
