Dead Russia refusing to unpause
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=7810
Game was paused because a dead country was banned. Russia refuses to unpause and wants a draw, although his last center was captured and his last piece was crushed during the spring moves. It is now fall, which technically means Russia is still alive, and therefore has to vote for unpause. Please unpause the game for us and while you're at it, spank Captain Tiberius.

Please unpause - country with no units banned
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=7729&msgCountry=Global
Can a mod please unpause? The player banned joined a country that had no units to move anyway.

Where do I report a multi-accounter?
One of the games I'm in is France (me) and Russia against Italy and Turkey. There was one German piece left sitting in England and has been CD for a long time.

New newbie question: NMR
If a player drops out, they default to all-hold, I get that. And eventually other people can Take over their country, I see that. My question is … how long? How many phases (if that is what matters) of NMR until the game is Joinable?

Rules question
When does a win take effect? I know that during the Autumn retreat phase a player is credited with any SCs he took during the year. Does this mean that it's impossible for a player to retreat into another's SC to prevent the win?

For example, let's say country A owns Rumania, and takes Budapest for the 18th center. Can country B retreat from Budapest into Rumania to stop the win (assuming it was a legal retreat)? Or does the "win" happen before the retreat phase?

Irony
Talking about irony sucks and it makes you look stupid.

Furthermore, everyone misunderstands what exactly irony means, and as a results looks even more stupid.
Fair enough.

Irony is what you do to a creasey shirty (Sorry, had to be done)
Whilst personally I don't have a problem with irony going round I do agree that it can be a very subjective thing - what's funny to one person isn't to the next.

Irony is when you decide to not get your brakes fixed and the same day your car gets totaled because your brakes failed.

The ironic is when the unexpected happens, put simply.... I misunderstood for years and when I heard this simple definition everything was laid plain. It is merely the occurence of the unexpected.

Invictus (240 D)

My English teacher once explained irony as a reversal of expectations. I still don't think that really gets all of it, though.
Chrispminis (916 D)
26 Jan 09 UTC
Nah, I believe there's more to it then that. Usually the unexpected is unexpectedly appropriate or coincidental yet sort of causal? Even if that's not the Oxford definition, it's definitely evolved since then. It is hard to denote though... The best way is through examples...

It's ironic that "Ironic" by Alanis Morissette doesn't particularly depict irony so much as unfortunate events. There's a lot more meta-irony to be extracted from that irony as well. =)

It's not a traversty and it's not a satire. That's how simple it is.

Irony has alot to do with clashing colors. For instance, a black fly in your Chardonnay is ironic. Had it been a white fly in your Chardonnay or the same black fly, but in a Merlot it wouldn't be ironic.

I was walking down the hall at French Lick Springs Friday talking to my wife on the phone about their "Buy one night get one free" offer for their Resort when an email came in from Grand Victoria (another casino resort) with the exact same offer. Coincidental irony at it's finest.

ChrisP - you brought up the Alanis song, don't tell me me reference was lost on you!

That's ironic!

Is the GM nowt but a computer?
With a game, the GM paused all the players without a /pause input from some players. A Global enquiry as to why this was so produced no response. Was the absence of a response because the GM is in truth a computer program? What event(s) triggers the program to pause a game without a request from all players?
