Tips for Newbies?
Howdy all. My entire World History class just signed onto this site as part of a fun little thing to do for class, and we're currently playing our first game. Just wondering if there's anyone out there with any pointers for us to take into account as we get involved in the action. Y'know, just helpful tips to make the learning curb a mite smoother.

Non sequiturs....

I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight, if all of you people don't tell me what you think of them.

Please note that I will not be tolerant of any statements that contain illogical conclusions.

Number one
I'm aware that rankings and the point system don't mean that much, but I'm still curious as to who the number one player is. I found dangermouse, who came up as number 2, but I can't find number one.

Biggest Win So Far
I just won my largest point game so far in Yellow Submarine.

I just want to say it was a great game and hope to play again with all the players. Italy and Austira almost had my solo stoped.

No units = no comments
In my opinion once you have been designated as 'out' you should not talk to other players about how the game is going. If they are also out or the game has finished then sure, or if you're not talking about the game in hand, such as if you're trying to set up another game, but there shouldn't be any comments from the dead to the living about the game. I might be alone in my views, but who knows: thoughts...

Well, I think you are allowed to say social things, like as well done, but trying to persuade people to change their views, such as telling them to attack say...Germany... is rather unfair. I'm only bringing this up now because its happened several times to me in my recent games, and that is of course a wholly theoretical situation. :)

In face to face diplomacy, would you banish the vanquished from the party? In postal diplomacy, would you mug his postman?

Losers should be allowed to stick around.* I enjoy the banter. And if they still have something to contribute to the game, then so be it.

* Except ednos.

I agree with Figle, but I must also admit that this rule is rather difficult to control. If we ban dead from the global chat, they can still influence other players privately.

How hard can it possibly be to ignore someone? Besides, history is full of tales of defeated leaders who helped their former enemy defeat their conquerors, or else became vassals of the victor and served faithfully. Think of Polyneikes and the seven against Thebes, or Cassandra warning Agamemnon not to go home (for all the good it did him).
dangermouse (5551 D)

I agree that it can be abused, but I like that I can still chat with my living opponents. It gives me a chance to discuss my gameplay somewhat objectively.
Medi (280 D)

In fact, I wish that this was extended more so, and thus that messages could be sent to players even after the game was over. That would allow for more extensive postgame analysis.
Chrispminis (916 D)

Hmm... I haven't decided my stance on this yet... I've used dead players before to try and get some information that might not be given to living players in the same confidence. I can see where you're coming from figle, but does it really detract from the game? Doesn't it just make sure that you don't disrespect the dead too much? Who would take advice from a player that's already been eliminated? =)
ednos (529 D(S))

Feckless Clod, you enjoy it and you know it.

All of my post-execution commentary has been comedic, and I feel it entirely appropriate in the company with which I play, although perhaps all that reference to rape and pillage went overboard (but he started it).
MarekP (12864 D)
06 May 08 UTC
Medi, you can chat with your opponents after the game is over. Just the envelope icon doesn't show on top of the page, what's rather inconvenient.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
06 May 08 UTC
Chris etc, I guess what I really want is clarification, and this is the side I fall on. I agree you can talk to them etc, I just think its not in the spirit of the game when a dead player uses the public chat to turn everyone against their killer or the like. You should be able to talk about your gameplay, but it's this hand in politics that matters to me.
Still, if dead players are legitimate targets for diplomacy then fair enough...
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

Well, within the game Anything Goes, so the question is, do they remain within the game?

There are such things as governments-in-exile.
Chrispminis (916 D)
06 May 08 UTC
Yeah, TheGhostmaker, that's the crux of the issue...

melbourne makes a good point. e.g. Taiwan.
Feckless Clod also makes a good point, despite being a Feckless Clod, that postal and face to face games would not discourage this sort of thing.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
06 May 08 UTC
Tibet is another issue there. In my opinion, one of the simplifications of the game is that you do not have uprisings, and it is only the ruler of a province who dictates their actions. Granted you can have a displaced nation, but once it ceases to be a nation then any claim to their original lands must be lost.
@fidge I don't think that a dead player would be able to convince one player to attack another. He has no leverage!

Also, I enjoy post-game analysis
Feckless Clod (777 D)
07 May 08 UTC
If the dead stay in the game at all, we can't police what they say, and shouldn't legislate against any topic of conversation. The whole idea is WAY too '1984'. (Unless it's ednos.)

Anyone had problems with support moves?
http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=3567

Turkey (me) in the above game both this recent round and previous round have had supports not carried out. In the recent round Adr Sea was to support Venice and Budapest to support Trieste, these weren't actioned and for some reason my other support moves were.

If happened in the Spring as well, a couple of support holds didn't occur.

Has anyone else had this problem, or is it just me?

Invitations & Winner Take All
Is there an internal mechanism to invite specific players to partake in a game, or is email the usual method?

Also, how do you set a winner-take-all game? I do not see an option when creating a game. Do you need a certain amount of personal points to do this?

Thanks for your help.

Technical Question
If you have posted your orders but not finalized, I assume that they are not carried out. In other words, if time runs out all of your units hold.

Is this true? Or are non-finalized orders honored?
