Supporting Convoy moves
Does this game allow you to do that ? For example an army in Kiel supporting a Convoy into Denmark from Yorkshire. If this is not possible under the current set of moves available it cuts out an awful lot of tactical possibilities imo.

No scroll bar on messages
New user so excuse if this is a common knowledge thing but once there are a couple of messages from the same sender/country, they disappear under the map and there is no scroll bar to access them. Can I open messages in a new window any way? Is it a browser specific problem?

Ryoshi - Top backstabber
If you enter into an alliance with Ryoshi, be careful: you are the first one he is going to attack! In my opinion, he backstabs even when there is no strategic reason to do so. It seems he gets into alliance with you just to attack you.

Said this, Ryoshi is fully a legitimate player. So, no complains about his honesty and his respect of the game rules. Just be careful if you enter into a coalition with him, he will attack you first thing :-)
TOgilvie (845 D)

I disagree. I have played in Ryoshi in two games, found him neither a wanton backstabber nor an unthinking stooge. In the single game you have played him (hardly a broad base from which to judge) he seems to have attacked you only when your forces were right on his doorstep; the actions of a cautious, defensive player perhaps?

I don't think you should make personal judgements, and I certainly don't think you should vent your frustration in the open forum, smearing Ryoshi's name in this crude fashion. If you truly believed Ryoshi an unreliable ally, you could have kept the knowledge to yourself and used it to your advantage if you met him in another game. It will be interested to see who the players on this site trust in the future- Ryoshi, whom you claim to be unreliable; or yourself, fr1988, who have shown yourself ready to spread rumours and 'overshare'.

Its one thing to accuse people of metagaming on the forum. That alerts others to possible cheating and actions that are not in the spirit of the game. It is quite another thing to get stabbed in a game and then come whining to everyone else on the forum.
sark923 (378 D)

This is the second topic that has come up recently involving people complaining about someone backstabbing them. I suppose the multi-account witch hunts of a few weeks ago have given some people the idea that any perceived wrongdoing is open to persecution on the forum. That is not the case. If I was stabbed multiple times by the same person I would consider that a testament to that player's superior diplomacy skill, or as an icon of my own gullibility and lack of vigilance. I certainly wouldn't be letting every player on the site know that the same player has stabbed me multiple times. How embarrassing!

This is the type of "publicity" Chrispminis correctly argued against in the previous thread.

I have advocated naming names in the past, but I am not interested in peoples' perceptions of the playing style of other players; I only want to know who is reliable in terms of finalizing their moves and not abandoning or playing stupidly when they are on the rails.

This posting is plain wrong because it may influence how others play with Ryoshi in the future.
TOgilvie (845 D)
01 Aug 07 UTC
I had replied to this topic without even reading the other thread! Naming and shaming people we don't like in public- it's like the News of the World in this forum! (NB- NotW is a British tabloid which is filled with vitriolic botty-dribble.)
The Mahatma (1195 D)
01 Aug 07 UTC
The appropriate way to air this kind of publicity is to get into another game with the untrustworthy player and try to isolate him by telling the other 5 in the new game that they should not ally with him. It's true this rarely works, nor should it, but it is the more appropriate form of publicity in my opinion.
Noodlebug (1812 D)

Is that not just the same as "meta-gaming"? You are taking your perceptions of the way a guy has played in one game and allowing it to inform your tactics (and those of other players) in dealing with him in another game.

Personally I think this is unavoidable, if you know someone is a liar, or unreliable, or bears a grudge, or anything else, it doesn't make sense to just "give him another chance" - ANY good diplomat has to keep one eye on the past. And personally, if people can give me intelligence on such "rogue nations" whether by private message (unverifiable) or by public forum (where other people might relate their own unfortunate experiences to back up the story) I will be grateful. I don't like those players who behave like they can do what they want because there is never any comeback against them.

Players earn the reputation they deserve, There are players who have won a great many games here without any complaints against them, underhand behaviour is not necessary to be successful.
TOgilvie (845 D)
01 Aug 07 UTC
Lets be clear, going into a game with past knowledge of a player's actions is NOT metagaming, it's common sense. Metagaming is.... well, I think a new thread needs to start: "The definition of Metagaming; what is legal and ethical in Diplomacy."
sark923 (378 D)
01 Aug 07 UTC
fr1988, from what I can tell from your games, you only have one game with Ryoshi, and you're doing quite well in it. Perhaps he stabbed you because he thought you were too powerful? In any case, getting stabbed in one game by somebody is not sufficient reason to smear them publicly.
dangermouse (5551 D)
01 Aug 07 UTC
Well, you've basically said it all. I agree but don't have much else to add.

TOgilvie..."botty-dribble"??
Chrispminis (916 D)
01 Aug 07 UTC
Noodlebug has a point when he says that metagaming is almost impossible to avoid. Since there is no anonymity in games, it would be ridiculous to suppose that players would not already have certain judgements on certain players based on previous games.

However, this is no reason to justify metagaming, and no reason to give up on avoiding it. We should still strive to minimize metagaming in all forms, and that means that public shamings for "underhand" tactics should also be avoided.

Hopefully, when the new ranking system is implemented, public shamings for inactive play will also be eliminated.

I posted my opinion, that's it. I assume that people can speak freely in the forum, if not, please accept my apologizes.

Players should base their actions on their own knowledge of the games/other playes, not on my opinion. Said this, I still think that expressing one's clean opinion about a player is acceptable. And Ryoshi is a backstabber, in my opinion.
fr1988 (100 D)
01 Aug 07 UTC
BTW, as I said in my original post, I do NOT accuse Ryoshi of metagaming and Co. He is a honest player, just a serial backstubber from my point of view.
TOgilvie (845 D)
01 Aug 07 UTC
How can you think he is a serial backstabber if you've only played one game with him? And let me just state again; metagaming is NOT 'having certain judgements on certain players'. That's just common sense. It's this crazy 'Alliance for Life' in all games you play that unbalances play and makes the game less fun.

Oh, and dangermouse, 'botty-dribble' is an awesome insult made by British Comedian Stephen Fry towards the Da Vinci Code. He also described it as 'arse-gravy' and 'loose stool water'.

I do not accuse Ryoshi for backstabbing. This IS the point of this game. Is that not the point of this game?!
opripom (2853 D)

Not quite. The point of the game is to subdue the other players. Backstabbing is just a tactic supporting that goal.
Ryoshi (100 D)
01 Aug 07 UTC
Wow...I leave for one day and I get all (in?)famous? And yeah, I totally backstabbed fr1988, I'll admit that, but it was only after he encroached on my own territories for quite a while - but anyways, I'm sure he can still pull it into a win, I just want to give him some trouble first. :)

About strategic consideration: if you were able to cross-reference orders and chat messages, you would see that Ryoshi would now be much better off if he cooperated with him. He would have his native territories, plus Balkans and few more spots.

Said this, Ryoshi has the right to play as he prefers, And I feel I have a right to comment games/players here, provided messages are kept clean and in prospective. And you have the right to read or skip or criticize these posts.

If you consider comments about games inappropriate, just skip them. But I guess you would loose valuable information, which other players will read. BTW, stubbing is part of diplomacy. If you have any practical experience of politics/diplomacy/negotiation, you know that also information (propaganda?) plays a big role, even bigger than backstubbing others.

My post here says something about what I think about Ryoshi, but much more about how I react to broken alliances. If you do not want be a loyal allied of mine, just do not start an alliance with me :-)

Anyway, I think Ryoshi is a smart, funny guy. Hope he is happy about being top of the league :-)

"I totally backstabbed fr1988, I'll admit that, but it was only after he encroached on my own territories for quite a while"

That's interesting. I stabbed fr1988 as well, for precisely the same reason. I even aborted the stab several times while fr1988 (sincerely) declined war, explaining he was only waiting to "back (me) up" somehow... he would move the offending units... which, he kept forgetting to do.

What to say... Ryoshi has been tenacious until the very end :-) It seems we will have to wait the full 24 hours before he finalizes his orders and I can get my final units created.

Anyway, thanks to everyone in the game and thanks for the great site!

Well, I agree that private messages are meant to stay private. Unless the recipient goes "public" about a game. In that case, messages can clarify the situation.

Then everyone can take with a grain of salt what people are saying, from every side.
dangermouse (5551 D)

He's not actually posting a screenshot of the conversation so even if he "goes public" with it, it's taken with a grain of salt.

Masterminds V
Alright folks, I'm thinking of starting up the next in the "Masterminds" series, although I'm not as big on the ranking system.

Anyone who is interested in joining the game, just email me at [email protected]

You can join this game even if you do not have the Mastermind status yet, as long as you have a respectable record, and feel you can hold your own with what is loosely considered the best players on this site.

Selection will be based on rank, skill, reliability, reputation, and obviously those with past experience in this series.

So I won't be starting this game right away, but I would like to generate some interest, and bring some new talent in. If you are not selected for this game, have no fear, I will keep your request on hand, for future games. If there are a LOT of viable candidates, I may ask someone to start a second game to run parallel to the first, but that is only if there is honestly enough skilled interest.

So send me your request, I'll need nothing more than your profile link. Don't be shy, there are no obligations tied to the request, and none until the game starts, where I just ask that you do not fall into civil disorder.

gopackers legitimate?
I just noticed that there are many, many accounts named "gopackers" playing in one game, and all but one of them have since gone in to civil unrest. This strikes me as a telltale sign of multi-accounting. Does anyone know if gopackers is legitimate?

Maybe a gamemaster display bug?
Kestas, can you please check the logs for HTTP Wars (http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1357).

For the Autumn 1914 turn, I believe I gave my army in Finland a support order, but it doesn't display in the Gamemaster. Not that it shows a different order, it just doesn't show ANY order. I suppose I may have accidentally left them holding, but I thought even that would prompt an output. Is it possible that there were too many orders and the maximum size of the Gamemaster box is too small?

fr1988 - new top backstabber
I formed an alliance with fr1988 at the start of a game, agreeing to keep the Black Sea demilitarized. He immediately (as Turkey) attempted to move into the Black Sea *and* moved an army into Armenia. This is completely unconscionable. I just wish I had Ryoshi as a neighbor!

If you find yourself in a game with fr1988, never agree to ally with him; you'll be the first person he stabs!!!111!!!one!

Definition of Metagaming
Much of the debate seems to centre around metagaming, particularly what it constitutes, and what is acceptable. aoe3rules brought this: "http://www.diplomacy-archive.com/resources/ftf/meta.htm" to our attention in a previous thread, which offers one definition. For my part, I think that metagaming is not 'using knowledge gained about a player (such as whether they are a stooge or a stabber) in a previous game to your advantage'. This is unavoidable with total anonymity. The permanent alliance, especially over many games, is metagaming; as is scratching a player's back in game X in return for support in game Y. What other definitions of metagaming and what constitutes fair play can users offer?

Game Statistics/History
I'm new here, but I think this is a feature request that would be useful to everyone. In the "completed games" section, would it be possible to track the games by result? I'm thinking something showing the # of completed games won by each power.

Since these games are all viewable as well, it would be neat to have a way to quickly view all of the wins by a certain power and follow how they reached their victory.
