America Going to Pot? O'Reilly vs. Stewart
http://screen.yahoo.com/comedy-central/burn-notice-bill-oreilly-marijuana-050000837.html
1. I...I have to let John Stewart's first few words speak for me. Every. Single. Word. That whole first clip where he talks before the 2nd O'Reilly clip...yeah. THIS is why you're King of the Secular Show-Biz Jews, pal! ;)
2. So, yeah, um, pot...I can't ever do it (not with my medication) but I'm curious...where does everyone fall on legalization?

A glossary for newbies?
Is there a glossary for Newbies somewhere? If not, could we start one?
What are WTA, Full Press, Gunboat, CD (a verb?), GR?
Any others to add?
Draugnar (0 DX)

WTA means winner takes all and it's counterpoint is PPSC for Points Per Supply Center.

Full Press means you can communicate privately with other players,
Public Press means you can only communicate on the global tab.
Gunboat means you can't communicate through words, only actions.
These are often abbreviated, FP, PP, and GB.

CD means Civil Disorder which is two consecutive missed turn in which you had orders to submit. We use it as a verb like saying "google it".
NMR means No Moves Recorded and is a missed turn. One distinction is all holds is not an NMR. You have to have not visited the game page at all to NMR. Also used like a verb on occasion.

GR is ghost rating, a separately maintained rating system that is further explained here:

Context might also matter in deciphering some phrases that may appear to be acronyms. Sometimes people abbreviate power names by the first letter and combine several to speak of groups of powers.

For example: if someone in a game speaks of a "GR alliance", they probably mean "Germany-Russia alliance"
yebellz (729 D(G))

Just to help clarify, "gunboat" is just slang for the "no in-game messaging" property of some games.

Unfortunately, the glossary in the link that I just posted is quite poor. I guess it's not really actively maintained.

There have been similar threads like this in the past. Here are a few:

full press = you can send private messages and public messages
public press = every message you send is public
no press = you cannot send messages (these games are often called 'gunboat' games)
press = message(s)

'CD' stands for 'civil disorder', but in WebDiplomacy refers to two consecutive phases with no orders submitted; 'CD' is not used to refer to 'civil disorder' as defined by the rulebook (this is a board game), which refers to the rules that come into force when a player fails to submit orders or the condition of a country in such a state. Civil disorder per the rulebook basically refers to the same thing as the term 'NMR', which is commonly seen on WebDiplomacy: that is, just one phase without moves submitted. 'NMR' stands for 'no moves received'. The difference between one phase missed and two consecutively missed is important because a great power with two consecutive NMR's is judged on WebDipomacy to have an absent player: any user not already in the game can take over the position, the great power's vote is not needed for draw/pause/cancel unanimity and the player does not get a share of the pot at the end of the game in the case of PPSC.

NMR and the 'press' terms date from the days when Diplomacy was being played via USPS.

Stab is what you do when you attack someone without telling them, which is kind of the way to attack in this game. Just saying because if you don't get that you will likely not get into this game until you do...

Enemy: Someone you are currently fighting.
Ally: Someone you plan on fighting later.
Cunning master of the game: You when you stab an ally.
Bastard son of a talentless whore: Your ally when they stab you.

"Ally: Someone you plan on fighting later."

That's actually a good rule of thumb for a newb.

The other abbreviations/terms that sometimes get me are the "official" terms for formal alliances.

Juggernaut: An alliance between Turkey and Russia (so called because it cannot be flanked and is thus quite strong).

Western Triple: An alliance between England, France, and Germany. Sometimes abbreviated as EFG, or WT.

Central Powers Alliance (or simply Central Alliance): An alliance between Germany, Austria, and Italy. I've seen it abbreviated here as CPA.
Many of the opening names (and inspiration) can be found on the diplomatic pouch: www.diplom.org/Online/Openings/‎

Which countries is it unluckiest to be landed with playing gunboat on the World Diplomacy XI map? Surely some are especially awkward to deal with. I'm looking at you, Australia...

What is lamer than people who join but don't move?
I am new to this web based forum, but holy cow is there anything than people who don't move? I mean for crying out loud, you have 12 hours! to figure out what to do and, nope, can't be bothered! Yeah, it kind of wrecks the game for everyone else when the neighbor of the lamehead grows too strong too fast, but whatevs.

And joining a live game minutes before then simply doing limp? WTF?

The People's Choice--Facebook's Top 5 Great Authors...by Likes--Thoughts?
At least from my searching for them on the pages with the most likes to their name...leaving aside the J.K. Rowlings, Stephenie Meyers, And Stephen Kings--Shakespeare (surprise!) ranks 1st with 6.8 million, Maya Angelou (surprise...?) is 2nd with over 4 million, Gabriel Garcia Marquez is 3rd with over 3 million, Fyodor Dostoyevsky ranks 4th with 1 million, and Jane "Life Begins at Man and Gossipy Bickering" has 900K. ...Thoughts on what that says about our popular choice in classic authors?

Player needed
gameID=132903

Anon, 50 point buy-in, 2 day phases. This group has played several games with each other, but we need someone to fill in one spot. Post here if you're interested. This is a pretty good group, so the games have been pretty challenging (we haven't seen a solo yet). As long as you don't have any CDs, I'll PM the password to the first interested player.
