Snail Mail Diplomacy
Just wondering if someone knows where I can find a diplomacy game using snail mail. I have always wanted to try to play in one and try it out. If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be most helpful.

So, the Obama presidency is over...
Take the Department of Justice spying on the AP reporters and the IRS being hostile to conservative non-profits, and add them to the Benghazi debacle, mix in some Fast-and-Furious guns sold to Mexican cartels, and you get an administration that is not only a lame duck, it is a dead one. Can Obama hope to accomplish anything in the next three years? Would the country be better off if he resigned and we started fresh with President (shudder) Biden?

Is it me or are the forum delays back?
Although the "Rendered In" time is ~0.05s there's a >4 second delay between clicking a button and getting a response. This wouldn't be that strange at 9pm, when a lot of people are on-line locally, but it's 2AM here now.

Little quick help please, French.
I need the following sentence in French:
I want to go to England in the summer holiday (or however you say that in English, if you speak French you know what I mean though).
Is the right sentence:
Dans les vacances d'été, je voudrais aller à l'Angleterre.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
13 May 13 UTC
If not, please tell me what is the right sentence. I'm especially uncertain about the first and last word, but not completely sure about the rest either.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
13 May 13 UTC
Also, can you say this too: Je voudrais aller à l'Angleterre dans les vacances d'été.
slyster (3934 D)
13 May 13 UTC
You could say it that way, but the right way of saying it would be:

"Pendant les vacances d'été,"

And then a little correction. You can't say "à l'Angleterre"

The proper way of saying it is: "en Angleterre"

So the correct sentence is:

"Pendant les vacances d'été, je voudrais aller en Angleterre"
Julien (2065 D)
13 May 13 UTC
Pendant les vacances d'été, je voudrais aller en Angleterre.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
13 May 13 UTC
Ah, thanks, so does this work too: Je voudrais aller en Angleterre pendant les vacances d'été.
slyster (3934 D)
13 May 13 UTC
For your second message, the right way of saying it is:
"Je voudrais aller en Angleterre pendant les vacances d'été"

Note that you can also use "durant" instead of "pendant"

So, regarding your 2nd sentence, note that in French, the coma is used to separate a sentence in two (in that case), and that when you use a coma in the middle of a sentence, you can also start your sentence with the proposition after the coma and end it with the first proposition.

I just realised it has to be: to London, in England. How does that work then?
slyster (3934 D)
13 May 13 UTC
Example:

"Cet été, j'aimerais faire le tour de l'Angleterre"

So it can also be written like this:
"J'aimerais faire le tour de l'Angleterre cet été"
steephie22 (182 D(S))
13 May 13 UTC
Yes slyster, understood that part, thanks.
slyster (3934 D)
13 May 13 UTC
Then your sentence would be:

"Pendant les vacances d'été, je voudrais aller à Londres en Angleterre."
Julien (2065 D)
13 May 13 UTC
Je voudrais aller à Londres en Angleterre pendant les vacances d'été.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
13 May 13 UTC
Ok, thanks both, and if you add a transport, so if you go with, say, a boat, how would the sentence get? Or is it best to do that in 2 sentences?
Julien (2065 D)
13 May 13 UTC
Je voudrais aller en bateau à Londres en Angleterre pendant les vacances d'été.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
13 May 13 UTC
And if you say what you're going to do there?

So, something like:

I want to go to London in England with a boat in the summer holiday. I'm going to do some sightseeing, shopping and relaxing (or something other than relaxing :P).
slyster (3934 D)
13 May 13 UTC
Yes, I would definitely so that. The dirt best tip I can give you about French sentence is to put as many sentences as you can if it gets too complicated. So I'd say you should add: "Je pense y aller en bateau."

Which means: " I'm on a boat motherfucker!"
Julien (2065 D)
13 May 13 UTC
Je voudrais aller en bateau à Londres en Angleterre pendant les vacances d'été. Je vais faire du tourisme, du shopping et me reposer.
Je ne peux pas, je ne veux pas sur un bateau.
Je ne veux pas, tu vois, avec un chevreau.
Je n'en mangerai pas sous la pluie.
Je n'en mangerai pas dans la nuit.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
13 May 13 UTC
No it doesn't slyster, I know enough French to know that's not what it means.
Julien (2065 D)
13 May 13 UTC
By the way "I want" is "Je veux". "Je voudrais" means "I would like".
steephie22 (182 D(S))
13 May 13 UTC
Got it. Thanks again. Now I need one more sentence:

I want to become an engineer because I think it's interesting to design buildings.
Why not an architect?
steephie22 (182 D(S))
13 May 13 UTC
Oh, and one more :P

I cycle a lot and I would like to shoot at a shooting range. (so the sport shooting)
slyster (3934 D)
13 May 13 UTC
I was kidding and referring to Saturday night live with the song "I'm on a boat". But yes, the sentence I wrote does mean: "I think of going (there) by boat"

Your last sentence:
"Je veux devenir un ingénieur parce que je trouve cela intéressant de concevoir des édifices."
steephie22 (182 D(S))
13 May 13 UTC
THM: Does it matter? :P
steephie22 (182 D(S))
13 May 13 UTC
Right. Thanks slyster. That last sentence and I should be done :P
Julien (2065 D)
13 May 13 UTC
Je voudrais devenir un ingénieur parce que je pense que c'est intéressant de concevoir des immeubles.
Note that usually in French we would use the conditionnel (je voudrais) when it comes to wishes. Je veux is quite a strong statement.
slyster (3934 D)
13 May 13 UTC
Cycle as in bicycle?

Then it would be:
"Je fais beaucoup de bicyclette et j'aimerais aller tirer des balles de fusil dans un champ de pratique."

Although I find that there's no link esteem those two ideas. You should put it in two sentences.
Julien (2065 D)
13 May 13 UTC
@Slyster: instead of "Je veux devenir un ingénieur parce que je trouve cela intéressant de concevoir des édifices.", one should say "Je veux devenir un ingénieur parce que je trouve que c'est intéressant de concevoir des édifices."
Julien (2065 D)
13 May 13 UTC
I agree on the two sentences. In France we use much more often vélo instead of bicyclette.
slyster (3934 D)
13 May 13 UTC
Esteem = between. Darn iPhone...

Yes, as Julien says, you can also use "je voudrais" we hat I wrote in my sentence means: "I want to be an engineer"

I guess it all depends how bad you want to become one ;)
slyster (3934 D)
13 May 13 UTC
We hat... C'mon iPhone!

*what*
slyster (3934 D)
13 May 13 UTC
"I want to become" instead of "I want to be" would be even more right. So it depends on how you want your sentence to sound like.

Ok, enough of French class. I'll leave it up to Julien now. ;)

Oh my god. That was the hardest 5 minutes of my life. You damn mods and your corruption. Why did you silence me? What did I do wrong? You abused your powers just because I had written the truth, didn't you? Or was it because I did it in French?
Also, you bullied me in the five minutes that I was silenced. How do I know you bullied me? It's obvious and if you bully me again, I'll contact Kestas about you bullying me. I'm surprised no one came to my defense though. You need to lengthen my silence time to at least 24 hours so that a nut job can show up and defend me. The best part of that will be when I am done with my silence and I speak up in the forum and make fun of my defender, he wouldn't get it because satire, sarcasm, and humor would be a bit beyond him. Why do you think he would freak out in the first place? There is a small chance that he is all knowing and all correct but I don't think that's likely. It's more likely that he's a self-righteous prick without a sense of humor who takes back his statements and positions after he's been proven wrong and claim that he knew that he was doing the whole time.

steephie22 (182 D(S))
14 May 13 UTC
@Mujus: I do understand you think that, but, to be clear, I had to do a speech without any paper and I couldn't figure out how to say those sentences. So it's not like I copied those sentences, I just asked how a French person says that. Then, once I got it, I did the rest myself. It was a big speech.

So I'm fine with you calling it helping with my homework, although that's arguable, but they doing my homework for me is just wrong :P

@Philcore: I don't think this sentence is a good pick up line IMHO
I cycle a lot and I would like to shoot at a shooting range. (so the sport shooting)

This one is even worse:
Mangerez-vous une chaussure avec moi ce soir ?

In fact, the only one that could be affected by such sentence is someone named Ava it seems!
