Substitute player?
I was wondering, is it possible to substitute a player into a game without needing to miss two phases to get a CD, but that's a long time in which the players entire game plan could get crushed as the players around him would take advantage. I know it isn't possible now, but would a mod be able to do it if needed? E.G. if a player leaves but doesn't want to ruin the game.

WEBDIP Poll - Invisible Voting and Status?
Add your vote and comment: Always invisible, Optional invisible or Always visible as it is today?
josunice (3702 D(S))

You should only see your own votes and status, and communicate intention through your actions and press, if available. Public voting is used for diplomacy and can be abused. Tracking opponent status just leads to angry forum posts...

Diplomacy is a game in which you *communicate* with others, hence the name. If you dislike that, I recommend Risk.

Are all the people voting for more programming also happy to pay for a programmer or just hoping that somebody will do it for nothing?
In Live gunboats where you typically have one if not more CDs then actually seeing people put up DRAWCANCEL vote is a great way of signalling to other players that the game should be stopped. If we could not see that you would probably have more people just resigning from games out of frustration. Also I have seen some multis/metas enter 3 players and then abandon one of the countries and then take it over, in that situation the 2 remaining cheaters are the only people who have not put up a DRAW/CANCEL vote. If the votes were invisible we could not see this cheating.
With that in mind my vote has to be always visible so that cheats can't abuse the feature in gunboats.

@uclabb - I'm looking at the pdf of the rules of diplomacy from Wizards of the Coast. The only thing it says with regards to a vote is "players can end the game by agreement before a winner is determined." Absolutely no mention of the words "vote" or "annonymous."

How the heck are people in gunboats, especially new players, supposed to know that the voting is appropriate? They will just sit there in merry ignorance long after a stalemate line has been established.

@jimgov- Apparently you are right. The reason why I thought that is that every tournament that I have heard of plays with secret voting. For example:
http://www.boardgamers.org/yearbkex/dippge.htm
http://www.dixiecon.com/id9.html
Boston Massacre was that way
and so on.
josunice (3702 D(S))

@Jim - The vote should be invisible and you can use press however you wish to convey voting, not through the vote buttons themselves.
@Nig - the FUBARed game being able to see the votes to track who ia holding up a cancel is actually part of the problem. It just makes one angry, but does not assist a resolution. Unfortunately there is no rule on required cancel of a FUBARed game...
Ultimately all communication should be through moves and press, that's it...

What ghug said. The end status of the game is a negotiation issue. If you look at the game as a simulation, there would not be anonymous powers proposing treaties to end the war. There would be knowledge of who was proposing a cease-fire.

Perhaps a better alternative would be only having one color checkbox that does not signify ready or orders entered, but only shows that a player has entered moves, this would take away the READY UP DAMMIT argument.
josunice (3702 D(S))

@jmo - that would only increase the witch hunt and still let people use people's status as info...

If I were playing F2F, my interest in the game (i.e. play one, draw, cancel) could be equally visible either through my actions (disinterest) or through saying to my fellow players, "This is bullshit, I call draw. Let's go to the bar..." thus making it a public pronouncement.

Always visible.
krellin (80 DX)

If you want to lobby for it without selecting it, you are free to do so. If you want to be swayed by someone else's public vote, that's your problem. Recognize that it *is* a diplomatic tool, and not jut a game mechanism, and deal with it appropriately.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)

That is true Krellin, in almost every form of playing face to face the other players will be able to see if and when you turn in your orders.

I thought there would be more purists -- you communicate through your troop movements and your comments, if there is press -- FULL STOP. Why provide other unintended diplomatic tools that can be perceived as collusion (strange Cancel/Pause votes) or why show the player turn status so people can get needlessly angry?
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
05 Apr 13 UTC
@josunice, If I play against you face to face you are going to know if I put my orders in or not simply by watching me write them. If 3 people have to leave I can talk to the other 4 and go "hey they all left...lets stop playing". If someone needs to go pick their kid up everyone can talk and agree to wait an hour for them. Those are what the check marks, cancel, and pause options represent here.
josunice (3702 D(S))
05 Apr 13 UTC
@jmo - the functions are good, just seeing them is not so good. In Press games there is ability to communicate such needs for a pause or desire for a cancel -- you can still see if a player has left, just not their votes or status. In GB, I can see where life may call for a pause, but is there a rule that it must be honored? Can you always call on a mod to force a GB pause, if not in a tournament? It is the risk we all run playing GB. For sure in FUBARed games everyone doesn't honor a cancel....

Have Diplomacy been used in education?
I am Japanese. I do not know what significance the game of Diplomacy has in U.S.A or EU. In Japan, it is said frequently, without any evidence, that the game of Diplomacy is a somekind of textbook to learn politics or other branches in junior high or senior high school. Is that really?

Science reported today that new research allows scientists to decode and predict objects in people's dreams. We are decades off from being able to watch dreams like movies, but this is still a major achievement. Thoughts on what this means for perhaps a person's most private type of experience?

Game is still on Pause Mode
I am currently in a game called world wide gunboat! - 28. A player was removed for duplicate accounts and the game has been in pause mode since. Everyone has submitted their orders and is ready for the next phase, but it is not moving on. Many players are voting to unpause as well. Is this a fluke? I am confused as to why the game is still in pause mode.
