Simple question--

If you weren't doing or majoring in whatever it is your profession or major is now, what wold you have chosen? What was that 2nd Road that seemed so tantalizing, maybe...but you took Road #1 instead, (bonus points for--why?) :)

Best Webdip Chess Player?
I think it would be interesting to find out who the best chess player on webdip is and see if there is any correlation between that and their GR. Though they would likely be very good at tactics, I know a lot of people who are good at chess and socially awkward, which I would think would make them less likely to be able to effectively negotiate.

What are your thoughts? Would anyone be interested in setting up some type of chess tournament?

There is no strategy for Austria
When Turkey, Italy and Russia attack you there is no strategy to survive. I would even say that if two of the three attack you and there is no third person who tries to ally with you, you just die. Does anyone have a successful history with Austria? its my least favorite starting point because there is basically no hope for a win

The so-called "real" Diplomacy is a game for pussies. Yeah, history sure proved conquering Europe by writing letters is the best way ever. Listen to yourselves, pussies: "Hi, France, wanna be friends? DMZ Channel?", "We definitely have to split the SCs, I care about your interests.", "That plan sounds really interesting but I have to go over it with Russia first.", "Please, I'm in a tight spot right now but if you let me into War, I'll do whatever you want." Grow a pair, pussies.

I'll tell you this, playing gunboat games has helped me immensely. I see the board in a whole new way. Actions speak louder than words. I love both styles of play but gunboats has helped me more in regular games than the other way around.

As for how to win with Austria, I'd say it's through patience. In gunboat this is even more important. In a gunboat game you must make sure that you're not an easy pray for anyone.

Second, you must demonstrate that you're not stupid. Support others or hold others when necessary. Failure to do so puts you on the scope of better players.

Thirdly, "You've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold'em, know when to walk away, know when to run."

Thank you Mr. Rogers for your beautiful insight unto our game.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

Actions absolutely speak louder, but I feel I see them loud and clear and don't need to play gunboat to learn how to interpret them.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))

To learn how to interpret movements isn't the only reason to play gunboat. You learn to pick up stalemate lines a whole lot faster, and you learn to read the board with a bit more objective rather than looking at it with emotional attachment, which happens with full press games.

More than any of that, it's just an enjoyable variant. The play is purely tactical. It's probably similar to why some people like chess. God knows we don't do it because it's a social game, a time and place to pour our hearts out. Moreover, it's easier to play seven gb games at the same time than to play one good full press game.

Why must gunboat games and gunboaters be judged every other week?!?
C-K (2037 D)
01 May 12 UTC
That's true, you don't. The moves are the same but in a regular game the words from the golden-tongued can persuade you to see differently than you should. It also often leads to premature draws where players get to mid-game and begin deciding on the best draw partners. Good gunboat players rarely do this. They understand better than others that a games not drawn until no more movements are possible. If you're the top sc holder that is. If not then you're looking for the draw as soon as you can get it.

Gunboat games are like going to the batting cage. It's helpful for certain things, and it can be entertaining, but ultimately you can only learn so much playing that way.
Manas (818 D)

Why are some people talking about gunboat as though its only purpose is to help learn full press diplomacy? It's an interesting variant in itself.

I feel gunboat is useful in that since you have no means of verbal communication, you must rely on board position and order history to get a clear picture of what's going on. Applying this to a full-press game, "the board never lies" is a good mantra to keep in mind to help weed out potential stabs and lies you've been fed over the past couple seasons. If you're good enough at reading the board, it becomes a tool of interpretation to give a clearer picture than you'd get through press alone.

Yes, I've won in gunboat with Austria. If anybody really cares, I'll dig up some examples. I also will freely admit I dislike drawing the red pieces. And, I have the least success with Austria, although in gunboat I think I'd rather draw Austria than Italy.

As for the rest of the argument, this is one of those religious wars, so it's probably not worth wading into it. I've had comparable success in gunboat and non-gunboat games, for what it's worth. However, I find that I can juggle many gunboat games at a time and a much smaller number of press games, hence playing mostly gunboat. I will also mention that a live game is much different from an email game, primarily because you know who each power is spending their time talking to.

I do think it's very difficult to play a live game with press, because playing proper Diplomacy involves analyzing the entire board and talking to everybody, every turn. It's difficult to do that in a 5 minute game - I just don't type quickly enough. But, I would back a strong gunboat player over a weak one in a live game, and vice versa.

In gunboat the key is to stifle the attacks on AH the first year so that Russia has to lose focus and deal with England/Germany and hopefully France will threaten Italy or best of all a Lepanto by Italy. Trieste to Venice and Vienna to Galacia is mandatory. If just Italy and Turkey go after AH with dedication it is just a matter of time. Turkey and France are the only two power that can really hold off an attack by two enemies for any length of time.

I think part of the frustration with Austria is that it's a country for advanced players. Many countries can make mistakes and survive to mid-game; Austria typically cannot. Similarly, newer players often grab available centers instead of thinking about balance of power, which encourages them to take apart Austria when they shouldn't. So, at the risk of incurring the wrath of those who wanted to turn this into a non-Austria thread, a few thoughts on Austria in a gunboat game:

1) Your goal is to win the game, and that means getting 18 centers. Geographically, Austria is in a better position than any other country to reach 18 when it grows. Essentially, once you get out of your box, your 18th center might be anywhere in Europe. My most recent Austrian solo ended with me in Sweden, Belgium, and Marseilles.

In other words, the tradeoff for being an easy power to eliminate early is that if you make it to the midgame in decent shape, you have unlimited growth potential.

2) You have two natural allies who make great partners. Both Italy and Turkey profit from an alliance in which they build fleets and dominate the Med and you build armies. Both are partners who can last as allies deep into the midgame, if not the endgame, and yet, when it ultimately comes down to it, *will not be a threat to stop you from soloing*. That's right -- Austria with plenty of armies can build an easy wall against I or T (I more easily, but T if you concede Sev/Rum) and still have the units to reach 18. Remember point 1 -- Turkey can have Rumania, but an A/T race for a solo is going to be decided by who wins the race to places like Belgium. And that's always going to be you.

3) Losing Trieste is not fatal. Treating is as must-retake often is.

Austria, sans Trieste, is a viable power that can grow and can defend against any further aggression. Italian players often take Trieste, but if they go no further, you have a viable game. Remember, your goal is simple: survive to the midgame intact, because if Austria ever gets to about 7 centers, watch out! In a press game, my general offer to an Italian who stabs for Trieste is that if he builds a fleet, he can keep it, and let's take apart Turkey. Italy's never going to get Serbia when you hold a Vie-Bud-Ser line anyway.

4) Galicia is the most important square on the board. OK, maybe 2nd, behind the North Sea. But the point is, basically any war in the East hinges on Galicia, and geography dictates that you control it. Would you rather lose Trieste or Galicia? Trieste. In a press game, A Gal means you have something to offer everybody. In a nopress game, it's still the key position from which you dictate the outcome of any R/T conflict.

5) The Balkans are littered with dots. This means your forces are always going to be more concentrated than any neighbor, and similarly means that there's much more room for tactical flexibility. Any move of the lines forward or backward means centers, and geography typically dictates that you're in the better position. In return, it means Austria isn't for the faint of heart. I've found that there are two types of tacticians: players who start by thinking about what their enemies can do to them and players who start by thinking about what they can do to their enemies. Austria is for the latter. As I've heard attributed to Patton (but can't find a source for), it's up to *them* to worry about *their* flanks.

@brainbomb: Does this mean you'll be able to stop them when your neighbors all want a piece of the empire? No, of course not. This isn't true of any power in Diplomacy. But at the same time, the high density means it's even easier for you to play the last trick in the arsenal of any dying power: die preferentially. Whenever you see multiple powers swallowing you, and can't turn them around, consider what each of them is thinking. Turkey and Italy are attacking you? OK, they probably each expect to get half of your centers, which leaves them in a position to contend with each other. So, you should try to ensure that one of them is gaining nothing, while the other one is gaining everything. This puts a lot of pressure on the power making all of the gains to keep the lesser power happy, and often the lesser power will instead turn around out of necessity. It might cost you half your centers, but half is better than all. In the game you described, you did a reasonably job of attempting it -- the problem, instead, was the Russian CD; it meant that Turkey was able to grow, instead of sitting there and realizing how much trouble a bunch of Italian fleet builds were going to be while Turkey got none.

Anyway, good luck with Austria -- it's definitely not an easy country to play, and all the more so for newer players.

I enjoy playing Austria. It's probably my second favourite power after Germany and was the power I played when I got my first ever win.

And there's lots of opportunity to win with it. There is also lots of opportunity to get eliminated in 1903. That's why it's fun, unlike say Italy where you'll die a long lingering death.

There's lots of good advice above. As others have noted above the key is diplomacy at the start. You need to have at least 2 of IRT on board, otherwise it's really tough.

Yes, my win was very much due to n00b Italy haha
Good stuff, CSteinhardt.

Per the unreliable source of wikiquote, I think this might be your Patton quote:

"Some goddamn fool once said that flanks have got to be secure. Since then sonofabitches all over the globe have been guarding their flanks. I don't agree with that. My flanks are something for the enemy to worry about, not me. Before he finds out where my flanks are, I'll be cutting the bastard's throat."

-- Conference with his officers (1 August 1944), as quoted in General Patton : A Soldiers Life (2002) by Stanley P. Hirshon, p. 502

Or maybe: "The hell with my flanks, I'm going to make the Heinies worry about theirs."

-- Attributed to Patton in Patton and His Third Army (2000) by Brenton Greene Wallace, p. 206.

Use greed and deceit to foil the plans of your enemies (I/R/T), for that will be their undoing. Below are some interesting outcomes to an Austrian player.
