Republicans trying to kill NPR (again)
WTF
NPR one of the only good mainstream new sources in America. I understand that it's not completely unbiased, but at least it isn't 50% commercials and 40% gimmicks. It's actual news.

intermediate diplomacy game
I've been playing webDip for a month or so, and I'm starting to get a little sick of the ridiculousness that happens in low stakes open games, like all the CDs and players who would rather go home early from a game than fight the long fight because it's PPSC. (I got into Diplomacy through FtoF with friends, so playing to do anything but win or stalemate seems very wrong to me; I'm aware others may disagree on this.) So I made made this game: gameID=52344.

Gunboat Etiquette - Cancels
Since there was some disagreement about this, I figured the discussion could migrate
Something we can agree on is there is no written diplomatic communication in a gunboat game. That is forbidden. We also all know that communication can be made via piece movements, votes and even things like amount of time to input orders.

I would like to speak to the second of those three points - communication via votes.

Draws: Draws form a diplomatic conclusion to the game. Nobody feels like they can gain any more by playing on. or they feel the risk is too great of losing all. It is clear that the draw vote, therefore, is a diplomatic tool. So we cannot talk about it on the forum since that will be a form of written diplomatic communication

Cancels/Pauses: The rules are clear about pauses NOT being a diplomatic feature. They make no mention of cancels. However, I personally believe that a cancel is not a diplomatic tool either. I believe so because the game doesn't end - it instead reverts back to a pre-game position, as if it never existed. There are many reasons to cancel and I will not go into detail about them. They all represent aborting games as opposed to diplomatically concluding them.

Therefore, since pauses and cancels are not diplomatic tools I see no reason they cannot be requested on the forum. I believe discussing their merits is another matter since a discussion will often lead to other things. However, requesting a pause or a cancel on the forum should be OK because no diplomatic discussion is occurring. Nobody is negotiating, signalling upcoming moves, or discussing past moves.

The rules do refer to common sense. If people use their sense about their cancel/pause requests on the forum, I believe it is well within the rules.

I am sure others feel differently. Would love to hear why.

You request a cancel or a pause by pressing the button. No further explanation is required.

And it is not as simple as "Is it a diplomatic tool/is it not?". It's about does it disrupt the vacuum of gunboat. And I think they do. I don't trust players to not take this information into account when making their moves, so I don't believe such requests should be allowed.

I certainly agree with no discussion of draws

I don't believe cancels should be discussed either

I always prefer a draw to a cancel, as, again, if THEY didn't show up, I see no reason why they should get their points back and why those who participated shouldn't be rewarded a bit.

As for when to cancel and draw...if it's one power going out, and it seems like it'll be balanced anyway (this happens the most, in my experience, when Austria/Italy doesn't show, as then the one not can then sort of fill in as the third in the East and keep the balance 3 West/3 East) and it looks like things won't be badly slanted, unless EVERYONE asks me to, I won't draw or cancel, but jsut paly it out, leaving and no-shows are part of the live game deal.

Two powers, it depends; if they offset (ie, corners gone with England and Turkey, or the middle with Italy/Germany gone) and I MIGHT play it out and see how it goes, depends on what everyone else says.

If it's two powers in the same region (ie, Germany AND France) or three powers: no discussion, DRAW/CANCEL.

discussions about cancels can end up influencing diplomacy

I agree with Lando.

I also agree with Lando, because yes, discussion of cancels or pauses can effect someone moves. A person having to CD, or a CD can effect the moves a lot more.

In terms of maintaining the integrity of the game. I'd rather have what will cause the least damage to the balance.

in general, pauses are tricky to deal with.

but maybe, in very special cases, like a semi-anon with people that are familiar with each other and also very careful about adhering to the gunboat rules, a pause could be reasonably worked out. but that's probably a <5% case of games where that could happen
@smiles: I can think of a lot of people (this President Eden fellow, for one) who would almost never grant a pause in a live gunboat but, upon hearing most any legitimate reason, would be willing to pause. No discussion -> PE doesn't pause -> no pause for player that needs it, vs discussion -> PE likely pauses -> possibility of pause for player that needs it. (And of course substitute whomever for 'PE.' I'm just a narcissist tonight. ;P)

As for cancels, I buy Lando's logic, but the players definitely need to handle with care, 'cause yebellz is right when he says cancel discussions can end up influencing the game.
