Can someone explain what just happened?
New to the site, and I'm having some trouble interpreting the symbols/rules. I'm *NOT* looking for advice, just an explanation of what happened.

Question About Retreating
I have a question regarding the rules of retreating. I'm new to this game and I didn't venture to read all of the threads, so I'm sorry if this topic was already reviewed.

Question for Programmers
Im making an array, and I insert a value at a point in the array, and any unused area is assigned a zero. eg [7,3] and each previous cell gets a zero. My question is how do i write a method that deletes the excess zeros, but keeps the value. Later on, ill have to have it delete zeros when i have information in the first, third, seventh cell etc, and the rest are filled with zeros.

In case you missed it the first couple times. You cannot advance past the stalemate line, you're not doing anything to try, so stop dragging the game out and vote draw. For the bystanders: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=40053#gamePanel

Signaling in gunboat games?
Can someone please explain any standard conventions that exist for signaling in gunboat games? Like...I think ordering a support hold to someone else's unit must mean something, but I'm not sure what.

Moves saved or ready
Hi, another newby question. If you have moves saved but not ready when the movement phase ends, will these moves be implemented, or will you be treated as having not entered any moves?

Is there any help page that explains how the webdiplomacy interface works, as opposed to the rules of the game? All I can find are the FAQ, the introduction, and the rulebook, none of which provide many details of this.

Live Games Tonight
Is there any interest in a high-ish pot live gunboat tonight? I'd set up a game and make it password protected. I'm thinking maybe 50 yen buy-in. Reply or message if this interests you.

What did I do wrong on this math problem?
I'm trying to find the equation of a parabola by using 3 of its points. The points are (1,6) (3,26) and (-2,21). I'm trying to find the form y=ax^2+bx+c. I worked out a to be 2.5, but the book says it is 3. You can find my work inside.

I am REALLY Losing Faith...
I am rapidly lost my faith in democracy--living through it the last decade plus, from the last couple disgraceful years of Clinton to Bush II's Regime to Obama's Bust (AND Ahnuld and our near-last education, jobs, etc. in CAL) right here in my home state, I now think maybe Plato was right...and Hobbes...I'm not advocating for "1984" or an Emperor or Reich here, but...well, all this bickering and I see FAR more hurt and waste than good...discuss?

Whoo hoo, you go Chile!
You guys have one hell of a country - I can't see us in the states being able to pull off what you guys did anywhere *near* as smoothly. You should be *damn* proud of the bar you've set for the rest of us screwed up, selfish nations when it comes to caring about our citizens.

Saving those miners was incredible, but let's not forget they were stuck there because they were working in a mine that didn't have the proper safety measures to prevent exactly this from happening.

Not to take anything away from Chile (this is probably the greatest story ever), but exactly this sort of mining rescue happens every few years or so in America. Remember those guys in Pennsylvania and those others in West Virginia? It's not as if we don't rescue miners here.

That being said, Chilean rescuers rule.
Draugnar (0 DX)

69 days, 33 miners, not a single casualty. That most certainly does *not* happen in PA or WV or anywhere else in the world every few years.

not to mention the mile underground thingy
realpauldec (690 D)

At Quecreek, PA, only 9 were rescued, but from a flooding chamber and it was done in 77 hours. That's pretty impressive considering they had to locate the miners, pressurize the chamber, and THEN rescue the miners. Oh, and 0 casualties.
Invictus (240 D)

I'm just saying it makes no sense to insult American miners and rescuers. Chile did a great thing by saving these men, and similar things happen in America as well. There are also terrible disasters in American coals mines every few years, and I'm sure ones at least as bad happen in Chile just as regularly.

This is an amazing story and I bet there'll be a movie about it within two years, but it makes little sense to knock down the amazing rescues which happen here in the process.
Chile made an all-out effort to rescue their people, and poured a shitload of resources into it. That being said, the drill that rescued them was made in the US and the high-calorie liquid diet they were fed with was donated by NASA.
stratagos (3269 D(S))

@Invictus - I understand the point you're making, but how long does it take us here in the states to stop the finger point and start with the rescuing?

I'm not saying the people who do rescues here don't rock; I'm saying you don't see Bush/Obama flying somewhere a day after something happens and saying "fuck this shit, quit screwing around, I'm in charge now, bitch - we're gonna do what it takes to save these folks, and play the blame game later"
Invictus (240 D)
14 Oct 10 UTC
Probably no longer that it took there. I'm sure the rescuers go and do the job they have to do as soon as they hear that an accident happened. Mines have safety procedures built in for just this sort of scenario. Mistakes might be made, obviously, but it's not as if the guys above ground are ringing their hands till the President shows up.

It's also not the lawyers drilling the rescue shaft. I think you're confusing any possible media attention and criticism with the actual mechanics of the rescue operation.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

i think what makes this one so impressive is scale:

number of men
zero casualties
depth of men
length of imprisonment

so yeah

In America, Obama, would have... what? farted around like he did with the oil disaster? Like Bush did during Katrina?
where do u get off?
Chile supercedes the USA in terms of managing disasters, as does the rest of the World these days. Bring on the Great American Decline

Be careful what you wish for.
Draugnar (0 DX)

I wasn't putting down US rescue workers at all, but putting the level of dedication and skill of the Chilean people at a high level. They set a new bar in every aspect.
