Does winning matter?
I'm looking at a game and thinking that I'm likely to survive but not win. So I'm trying to understand what happens to losers. Does the winning player get any kind of bonus for victory, or do all survivors split the pot evenly?

If the only difference between winning and a 2-way draw is 1/34 of the pot, it seems to me that this creates significant strategy differences from traditional Diplomacy...in my experience, a victory is substantially more valued than a draw.

Obviously it proves that high Ghost Rating players have been corrupted by the system, as we all know the only *true* victory is a solo. Or something.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
19 Feb 10 UTC
No. It proves that they value victory, and therefore won't let it happen for anyone else. Vicious Bastards.

I was actually surprised by the number of two way draws. I wouldn't have expected many to begin with, and I would have expected the number to sharply drop at higher levels. Instead it's pretty constant
Sum those graphs up for the colorblind....

Strat: You sound like Noodlebug!
DJ: The top line is solo's, then 2nd most likely results are 3-way draws, then 4-way and last 2-way, presumably because its such an awkward situation for many nations to reach (ET being a clear counterexample)
figlesquidge (2131 D)
19 Feb 10 UTC
Lower the PMCC graphs show solo most likely for low GR, and 3-way is again the line rising towards it fastest (overtaking in WTAs to be the most common result).
stratagos (3269 D(S))
19 Feb 10 UTC
Lower ranked players have an extremely high proportion of solos to other wins, but solos, three ways, and four ways seem to be about even at the high end.

In the final graph, the line dropping sharply is solos, and the line jumping sharply is three ways

You're a year older than me (and welcome back to society - I saw you in one of the 'heavy' threads recently), and started here before me - so you're pretty well the only person who *cant* call me old here! :P

Still, an interesting set of results Ghost. They match what I expected surprisingly closely, although I must admit I rather assumed that my assumptions would be completely inaccurate.

Same thing with chess ratings. Chessbase bizarrely trumpets the lower draw percentage among lower-ranked players, sometimes calling it "fighting spirit" when in fact it's just a higher incidence of errors leading to a decisive advantage.

Bottom 2-ways

Poor old Noodlebug!

Apart from that, how have you considered the fact that draws weren't available for the first 1500 or more games, so for more than 30% of the games considered?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

I only looked at GameIDs above 4000 to avoid that problem, Noirin

I'd be willing to bet the # of solos in low GR games is heavily correlated with a lot of CDs.
Centurian (3257 D)
19 Feb 10 UTC
Highly rated games have lots of good players. Lots of good players aren't likely to lose a game. Especially in WTA. I have conceded one solo this year, and it was only because of a mishap on someone elses part. Draws are just about not letting anyone win.
Centurian (3257 D)
19 Feb 10 UTC
Actually I think that was in 2009.

But the point is, if you play in games with more than three decent players, they should be able to say "hey guys, France is at 12 centres, alarm alarm."
fortknox (2059 D)
19 Feb 10 UTC
I'm impressed that there are still solos for the higher ranks. I'd expect to be near nil...
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
19 Feb 10 UTC
Well, there is still the chance of games with one or two weak players in them which would mean that a soloist could play off their weakness in order to gain a win.

Samianus (471 D)
19 Feb 10 UTC
I think that the Ghost Rating rewards draws more heavily than wins so that those that draw a lot get higher ratings. Correlation equals causation, right? ;-)

I would think that the smaller number of CDs among higher level players strongly contributes to the fewer solo victories.

I play mainly gunboat games because otherwise I wouldn't have enough time to play more than 1 or 2 games at a time. It is pretty difficult to draw in gunboat games.

jbalcorn (429 D)
19 Feb 10 UTC
It used to be true that draws were worth a lot due to a bug in the algorithm. We found the error and corrected it, so now it's a better relative worth - it used to be that draws with higher-ranked opponents actually counted for twice what they should have.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
19 Feb 10 UTC
Not quite true that jbalcorn, however there was a slight tendency to overvalue *all* draws, though a number were undervalued too.

It's all recalculated now so that isn't relevant to this data.

CD is likely a relevant factor, alongside greater skill.

Needles into Heavan
It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter the gates of Heavan.
This seems quite clear to me, yet the Catholic Church is said to be the richest organisation on Earth and there are millionaire Evangalists on TV. Hipocracy or is it a very big needle you have to pass through to get in?
