WebDiplomacy app
Kestas, have you thought at all about getting a dev team working on an iPhone app? I def think that an app would be a killer idea.
the.dibster (100 D)
03 Feb 10 UTC
That would be quite helpful, if possible. But I know it takes some resources to do it.... perhaps if you charged a bit for the app?

My sister got her iPhone yesterday, I tried this site out while playing around with it and though I didnt get further than the guest intro screen there didn't seem to be anything immidiately broken.
If it is broken where does it break, and why would it break? I do test the site on safari every now and then, and doesn't the iPhone run safari? (Or is it a slimmed down version?)

What would be the difference between an iPhone app and the site itself? Bear in mind I don't own an Apple computer or phone, or know Objective-C, so an iPhone app from me is pretty much off the table, but getting this site working with iPhones (perhaps even with special CSS which scales the site down ala Facebook) would be good I think

The site runs fine on iPhone

I don't think there's much point in an app, but I agree that it would be nice/useful to make a slimmed version.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
03 Feb 10 UTC
I think this would be good to do, and would involve reducing the spacing around, and changing all the images on this page (new message etc) to be shown through CSS (background-image) which could then be removed on the slim version & replaced with judicial use of font changes.
RBrock (132 D)

It's not so much that it doesn't work, but its not as streamlined as it could be.
Kestas-if you'd like, I can maybe piece together a concept art for this. I really think that an app for this could be really fluid and seamless. The site on the iPhone is somewhat clunky. some of the borders and frames impede some of the buttons. Also...I have fat fingers. Just sayin'....for all us fat-fingered, the app would be puuurty nice.

Do you know of an online I-phone browser sim?

This isn't all that great, and in fact, its not really what I see at all. But it kinda shows what is going on. If interested, I know someone who might be willing to make this app. He's pretty much a programming guru in my area.

Why bump this RBrock?
Really this should be on the dev forum anyway.
Well, my point is that there's no easy way to develope an I-phone specific CSS skinning if we don't know what it looks like on an Iphone, and I know I'm not going to buy one just to test webDip!
fortknox (2059 D)
03 Feb 10 UTC
RBrock, if you know Objective-C and are a fabulous Cocoa developer, knock yourself out to develop one. But you can't take a php website and just whip out an Objective-C front end and throw it on an iphone. Even with the entire skillset, getting it in the app-store is a several week process...
Alderian (2425 D(S))

In addition once you have built an App, then what happens when Kesta makes some changes that break it? Is he responsible for making sure the App has been updated to match before putting his new code in production? Or do people using the App have to stop using it while it is updated, if it gets updated.

Making some special style sheet for a smaller screen would seem like a good middle ground, if it is easily maintainable and Kestas is happy with it. But as FQ said, the proper place for this is the dev forum. Look under the help button at the top and then under the developer information link.
lkruijsw (100 D)

You have also copyright issues. Apple may refuse the App, because Hasbro is the owner of the boardgame.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
03 Feb 10 UTC
FQ - never been called that before :P
What would people change when slimming the site?
1) Remove unwanted images (1 D symbols, mail icons etc, big title box)
2) Perhaps a little javascript to make the small map available in the same format as the large map, on its own as a separate view?
3) Reduce greyspace & padding around site.
RBrock (132 D)
04 Feb 10 UTC
How about simply a mobile site?
That could be done relatively simply, correct?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
04 Feb 10 UTC
Yes. However each time I've asked what people would change there is an overwhelming lack of response.
RBrock (132 D)
04 Feb 10 UTC
Sorry, I looked at it, and thought...well, that's basically what facebook mobile is. Facebook minus the useless side stuff.
How about just trim down phpDip and make a iPod/iPhone mobile based site? That could alleviate all problems and circumvent any possible problems that may arise with copyrights, and other such...for lack of better word...stuff.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
04 Feb 10 UTC
Yes, so which bits do you think should be trimmed down?
denis (864 D)

I play off my Iphone all the time I never use a computer. So an app would be useful but the site works fine

Ok so I posted about this exact same request a few weeks back.

I actually have an android phone where the "approval" process is much faster, although, I am not too sure as I am not a developer.

Following is a list of things that I would like from an “app” (NOT A mobile site):

1. Notifications, e.g. when someone sends you a message or makes a move.

2. The display itself – right now I have to scroll back and forth to read messages and select orders, etc. Scroll up on longer messages is impossible. Actually scrolling on messages does not work so I am left reading the last few lines of a long message. Perhaps a SMS or google talk style “dedicated” chat system. The main problem is everything is on one screen if there were a number of tabs to select separate things (e.g. one to view map, one to enter orders, one to chat, etc.)

3. Entering orders is not that difficult but scrolling across the screen to order a complicated convoy is a little irritating.

4. Viewing the map is difficult (again scrolling is the main problem). This could easily be fixed if you could JUST view the map on the entire screen.

5. I think the most effective thing would be if you could do orders by clicking on one territory and selecting another. This would be a “attack” order. If you click on one country and hold down it gives you a choice of “support hold” or “support move” after which you select the territory the “support move” is from. I’m not a UI designer either so this may not work in practice, just an idea.

6. Sync – essentially you do everything you want and select “apply” and it then syncs. Right now I have to wait for an entire page to load before I can chat with a certain country so chatting with all six others (and perhaps group chat) is a real headache, Would be nice if you could send out a bunch of messages and then have it “sync”. Similarly, if you know exactly what all you need to do you can make ALL your orders in ALL your games and select “apply” to have it all sync in one shot. This would save a lot of loading time.

7. Stuff like the forum isn’t that important for this app version and should be less of a priority.

8. Just to reiterate the display is the primary problem. When you load the home page the way all your pending messages/order show up is difficult to navigate. A streamlined list would be much easier on a phone.

Anyway I can understand that most of my suggestions are difficult (if not impossible) to implement, but, I thought I would just throw out some things that bugged me playing webDip on my Android browser.

I live in Singapore and paying for apps through the Market is not possible. However, I would happily pay $10 and I’m sure if 10-15 others agree we could get a dev to make this app for us.

There isn’t really anything to “trim down”, per se, it’s more a question of re-organisation. For example, the message box is too wide and would need to be made narrower.

The ability to scroll up through messages.

The ability to select your list of games (without pages of scrolling).

The ability to enter orders without scrolling across the page.

That sort of thing.

Well, several of your map features work on the SVG map, although I'm not sure if/how well safari supports SVG.
If I can free up some time I'll talk to Oli and perhaps we can continue working on that.

I really like this idea. I hate trying webdip on my iPod. its not that it doesnt work...its just harder to use than it should be.

SVG map?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
05 Feb 10 UTC
SVG is a vector graphics format (SVG = Scalar Vector Graphic) and work was done about a year ago to convert the map code into SVG. However, it was rather allowed to stagnate and never got introduced. I'll look into finishing it off as soon as I can find the time.

All it requires is a new css for mobile sites, really. If you guys can just all agree on something, or give Figle an example of css that would make it fit your phone better, he could go from there...
I've been playing this on my iPhone for 2 weeks or so (and on my computer for 2 years). I see no need for the app. Yes, viewing the map is challenging, but nothing you can do will make a map of Europe with little bitty armies on it more accessible on a 4" x 2" screen.

I've had no issues using my iPhone. I just try to remember its NOT a computer, its a phone. It doesn't have a 15 inch monitor either.

Thanks fortknox, maybe that's clearer :P
For any of you using firefox, you can tweak the page by typing javascript:null(document.designMode='on'); into the URL. Perhaps then you can get an idea of what you're after

When a draw occurs and an odd point is left over (3 way for 70 D for ex), where does it go? Does the player with the highest SC count get it? Does it just disappear into the great unknown?
