Question about a pet peeve
I've got a question about a pet peeve of mine regarding automatic disbands when a player has no supply centers... forgive me if this one's been done to death, but I need to vent my spleen.

In this game, England just lost his last SC, but has one unit on the board and only one space to which that unit can be moved. He's also been running out the clock or not finalizing orders, thus making us wait out the full 2 days for every turn (we're in Autumn 1905 and the game started more than a month ago.)

Why does the game not automatically remove his last piece from the board? It's going to take 2 days for us to wait on him to move it to Wales, and if he does move it, another 2 days for him to enter his order to disband the unit. To me, this seems kind of silly. The rest of us are fairly quick at entering orders, so it's kind of annoying having to wait out the full 2 days over something that's going to happen regardless of the player's input.

Is the site set up this way because the programming would be too complicated to determine when to automatically disband and when not to? To me, that's the only reason for it that makes sense, but I'm not a programmer.

Sorry to change the subject, but I'm a new player and I have a question about retreats on this map. lifein2x3 says England can only retreat to Wales, but can't England also retreat to Edinburgh or Yorkshire? And if England retreats to Edinburgh, won't she get the supply centre and therefore keep her unit?

I do agree that it would be nice if the site automatically removed units in the case that there are no choices for retreat or disbandment, or in the case that none of the retreat directions could collide with other units and the retreating unit must be disbanded. But this should be done carefully!
lifein2x3 (168 D)

England can't retreat to either of those spaces because the last unit he has is a fleet, which would have to go through Clyde to get to Edinburgh or Wales and London to get to Yorkshire.

From Liverpool, a fleet can only move to NAO (occupied), Irish Sea (occupied), Clyde (attacked from there, ergo not a valid move) or Wales.

"or in the case that none of the retreat directions could collide with other units and the retreating unit must be disbanded."

The catch here is that any two units who collide in a retreat are both disbanded. So if Player A has no choice but to retreat to country A, while Player B has a choice to retreat to country A or B, he can choose to take Player A's unit out with him if he wants by retreating to country A. (I'm not sure why he'd do that, but this is hypothetical.) If he retreats to country B, both Player A and B get to keep their unit.

basically because of those certain conditions are difficult to programme for, and it hasn't been done.
falsifian (188 D)

Whoops! I forgot to check which kind of unit it was!

As for your second comment: I think we're saying the same thing. My idea was that if a retreat could lead to such a collision, then the retreat should not be done automatically, since the retreater's choice matters.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

it is easy enough to check that a player has non SC left, and auto disband in the adjustment phase, but doing so in the retreats phase is harder.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

no SC, not non... stupid typo.
falsifian (188 D)
13 Jan 10 UTC
orathaic: Agreed. And it just occurred to me that, at least in no-messaging games, a player might wish to convey information using the direction of the last retreat or by choosing to disband immediately rather than retreat. A bit far-fetched, perhaps, but it bugs me.
falsifian (188 D)
13 Jan 10 UTC
To be clear: it would bug me if automatic moves were introduced, preventing this final information from being conveyed.
lifein2x3 (168 D)
13 Jan 10 UTC
@falsifian - Ah, okay. That makes more sense. I do agree about automatic moves being a bad idea, but if none of your retreatable spaces are open SCs, and you're going to lose your last unit, I think it ought to be automatic.

But really, I had to vent. It's frustrating having to wait 4 days for something that would otherwise take maybe 24-36 hours.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Well, he does have a choice to just disband as well which could theoretically affect other players positions. But there is the occassiona where there are no retreats and disband is the only option. Then there is no reason not to make the move automatic. I saw one recently in a gunboat where the retreating unit had been totally crushed with no where to which he could retreat. Yet we had to wait for him to put in orders...

You're going to be bitter about that for a long time aren't you Draug.

Yes, if there are no options a unit should be automatically cancelled. However if it has options, even if none of them are SCs, then it gets much more complicated. For example, his retreat could disrupt another players retreat.
lifein2x3 (168 D)
14 Jan 10 UTC
It seems like there should be a simple way to program that, maybe? I mean, if you can sum up the rule in an If-Then sentence like "if there are no options a unit should be automatically cancelled", it'd make sense that there's got to be a way to do it?
Draugnar (0 DX)

I just wanted to Draugnar the situation. :-)

P.S. You coined the phrase so you've only yourself to blame...
figlesquidge (2131 D)
14 Jan 10 UTC
The issue is life at the moment the system doesn't calculate the orders when it cycles the game, so it doesn't know if there are lots of options or not. I agree it would be quite nice to add a check that if a unit has no retreats and disband it, but that would require checking every retreating unit.
Not saying it shouldn't be done (I think its a really good point) but just that it would require more load on the server (not too much I agree) so is not quite so simple to decide on.

My two cents:

life in 2x3, You guys signed up for a game with a 2-day phase length. If you want to play in a game which, in your words, moves "fairly quick" you should really have joined a game with a shorter phase length.

In terms of the rules of the site, the England player is justified in making you wait the full phase length.

You should always assume that every phase will take the full length to resolve. One of MY pet peeves is people messaging me to say "hey you, hurry up and finalise" when there are still several hours left to go in a phase. You want a fast game? Join a fast game!
figlesquidge (2131 D)
14 Jan 10 UTC
That is a fair point, but if we don't let people who have no orders hold things up players who have no choice about their orders shouldn't be able to hold things up either.
Draugnar (0 DX)
14 Jan 10 UTC
The load on the server wouldn't really increase so much as shift. Right now, the server still does that check at order entry time. Otherwise it couldn't tell the player their orders are invalid because they have no valid retreats.

Fig hit the nail on the head. This game is also why I never play games longer than 24 hours. I only made that mistake once.

Darwinism and it's relation to criminal science
So I'm writing a paper on this subject, and I wanted to get some other opinions on the subject. basically the case *for* the idea that darwinism has effected the criminal justice system is that you do not punish the person for their actions, but simply give them therapy to help them (i.e. no death penalty, ect). Supposedly that is a bad thing. I was wondering if you guys had any evidence against the idea/for the idea or if you all simply think it's ridiculous. no debates please.
