Seven Islands variant
I'm wondering if anybody has playtested this one much. It looks interesting, and I'm about to enter a Seven Islands game on goonDip, but it also looks like the sort of thing which might make life miserable for Germany, Russia, and especially Austria. And then there's the problem with the Main Stalemate Line - the southern half of it contains 22 supply centers.

Can anyone access Goon Dip?
Gigatrex's sister site to this one where hes testing out varients. I'm in a few games over there, I know some more people from here also are. I can access this site and other sites on the net, but goondip seems to be down. Can anyone access it?

Yet another live game
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=15906

We need just 4 more people. 5-min phases means the game will be short and sweet. It would be great if a bunch of people joined in for a few hours of good war!

quick question
a dislodged unit can cause a bounce in the province it was attacked from?
ie,my units in A,B his in C,D, my unit A and B move to province C(single moves each, in order to cut support that C could give), enemy C moves to A with support from D - does A still cause a clash with B or being dislodged thus B moves in while C takes A. i dont think so but want to double check

The perfect diplomat
I just met the perfect diplomat.

No more details?
I was teaching my daughter and son how to play the board game (she's 9 and he's 7). after the first round, he wrapped his arm around my shoulder and said "Daddy's my buddy, we're going to always help each other out". Now how do you backstab that? :-)
Draugnar (0 DX)

That's the perfect opportunity to stab and teach them a valuable life lesson.
lifein2x3 (168 D)
24 Nov 09 UTC
Dragunar's got the point; this is a "teachable moment."
Doh! I missed the opportunity! Like I said he's slick. This is the same kid that painted his sister blue a couple of years back.
Don Corleone (277 D)

And that is why you never play diplomacy with your kids, wives, or girlfriends.
Kids, I agree. With wives and girlfirends life is Diplomacy (just with no discernable rules).
Draugnar (0 DX)
24 Nov 09 UTC
@CA - you act is if there are some indicernable rules in SO diplomacy. There are NO rules where the SO is concerned, although you are bound by thousands of unknown ones when it comes to how you act.
lifein2x3 (168 D)

I imagine Diplomacy is responsible for the end of more relationships than any other board game. My other half and I have no compunction about stabbing each other when we play the board game, which makes life interesting.
pootercannon (326 D)

You know, my family (parents and sibling) used to play Monopoly all the time together. Things got pretty cutthroat with the deal making -- to the point where we had to start writing down the contracts (which made it even more cutthroat when we figured out that some contracts are transferable), but I would never EVER play Diplomacy with any member of my immediate family.

That's a line I won't cross.
Macrado (706 D)

Playing Diplomacy with your significant other seems like a good way to ruin your relationship. "Hey honey, would you like to play this fun little board game with me, and find out what a lying, cheating, backstabbing a-hole I really am?"

pootercannon (326 D)
24 Nov 09 UTC
Not to mention figuring out all my signs when I DO lie to you?
Maniac (184 D(B))

@Crazy - c'mon it's easy to play against your 7 year old, agree to help him out every year and every year make some dumb mistake. All boys (a) trust their dads no matter how many times they lie to them and let them down and (b) think they're dumb. It'll be a sinch. I would worry about playing with the older one though, girls can suss out BS-ers quite quickly.
lifein2x3 (168 D)
24 Nov 09 UTC
@Macrado: Good point, but he's easily as much of a lying, cheating, backstabbing a-hole as I am. Which is why it works out so well. :)

We made the mistake of having 3 couples and a single friend of ours playing in one game... that was an interesting experience. Fortunately for me, bean dip is relatively easy to clean off of walls.

I think this story would have been even more adorable if your 9-yo daughter had stabbed you right after that. :)
She did... :-/

im actually envious of those that have spouses/children and/or enough friends + time to get a ftf game together.

heck, id give my right arm if i could get my wife to enjoy a) american football b) strategy war games (especially this one) c) guy-flicks
akilies (861 D)
25 Nov 09 UTC
you just need to start labeling them as things she'll like. my girlfriend hated watching american football until i actually explained the basis and told her that in all reality it is just a silly game made for men to get their anger out, she said that was stupid and so i let her laugh at all the bad plays and stuff, but she does watch it now.
as for strategy war games, i think that is a false hope, you'd have to give more than just your right arm
pootercannon (326 D)
25 Nov 09 UTC
Tru Ninja: I count myself extremely fortunate that I have 2 out of 3. I can't get her to like strategy games of any kind, but football and movies I got. I think it's more than fair.

Confessions - Have you ever lied on the first turn?
I read in the school of war thread: Don't lie on first turn. It is never worth it.
Has anyone ever lied on the first turn?
I have. Once when I was playing England I told France I wouldn't move to the English Channel. But I did.
