Seven Islands variant
I'm wondering if anybody has playtested this one much. It looks interesting, and I'm about to enter a Seven Islands game on goonDip, but it also looks like the sort of thing which might make life miserable for Germany, Russia, and especially Austria. And then there's the problem with the Main Stalemate Line - the southern half of it contains 22 supply centers.

quick question
a dislodged unit can cause a bounce in the province it was attacked from?
ie,my units in A,B his in C,D, my unit A and B move to province C(single moves each, in order to cut support that C could give), enemy C moves to A with support from D - does A still cause a clash with B or being dislodged thus B moves in while C takes A. i dont think so but want to double check

Confessions - Have you ever lied on the first turn?
I read in the school of war thread: Don't lie on first turn. It is never worth it.
Has anyone ever lied on the first turn?
I have. Once when I was playing England I told France I wouldn't move to the English Channel. But I did.

The Small and Little-known Company...
Bill Gates is AFRAID of!

Imagine a world where the PC you buy today, will last 10 or 15 years.
picture of a Bill Gates

And... It will NEVER need upgrading. Or even fixing.

Ridiculous?

One specifc company is already working on this exact premise. And it's technology that could bring down Microsoft.

Here's how it works:

Your computer would be connected via the internet to a computer cluster.

(This "computer cluster" is just a data center full of servers)

And... Instead of doing any processing work, your computer would instead just act as a midway point between you and the cluster.

All fetching, filing and retrieving (all the hard work a computer does)... Would instead be done by a super-fast computer cluster.

Computing resources would then be a metered service, similar to public utilities like electricity, water or the telephone.

What would this mean?

Your computer would never need to be upgraded. As all the processing work your computer does, would be done by the computing cluster.

What's more... There would be far less technical problems, as any problems can be fixed by expert on-site technicians at the computer cluster.

The result is a cheaper and much faster home PC.

You may think this sounds like a pipe dream.

But... Listen up:

The technology I've described above is already fully functional, and the company is already bringing in substantial revenue from Japanese companies.

Best Regards,

AND i was expecting the company to be Google which has already announced it will be releasing it's new chrome O/S in 2010 - which will likely do most of the things described above.

It's called cloud computing. Initially it will have uses more on the business side, but one day will likely expand to include the public domain.

As for this specific document, If they don't tell you the company name right off the bat, it's probably a scam of some kind. If they want money, it is almost definitely a scam.

In this case specifically, as I re-read this, it doesn't even sound much like cloud computing any more. What this technology is, is basically turning your $1000 computer into a dumb terminal. This technology has been around for a LONG time. Before there was the personal computer, there were dumb terminals connected to a main frame, which did all the processing. The dumb terminal just displayed the output. This sounds much more like that.

And to say your computer will never need fixing is utter BS. It still has moving parts. Moving parts break. Monitors burn out. I say scam.

yeah, the terminal <-> cloud model seems to be making a bit of a come-back at least in Google's opinion. (they being the ones who think a new generation of O/S will be entirely browser based...)

I doubt we'll every go truly 100% lightweight client like we were in the days of "green screens". But I can see a future where medium weight clients which do part of the processing on the local machine using a future Java-like application or applet and another part on the data store/server layers will be the standard and where more and more cloud computing (which is actually something different from this model) takes effect. True cloud computing is where a whole variety of machines do the processing, like Plura and the SETI@home programs. After all, the home PC today has way more power that it typically uses and as we move away from heavy-weight applications to the medium and light-weight models, more of those processor cycles will be freed up and avaiable for other tasks in the cloud.

I seem to be the only one of my friends (we're all in our mid to late 20's) who's skeptical of this as an idea. There's something about being reliant on hardware somewhere else that bothers me, not to mention having all of my personal files on someone else's server and me being dependent on a service to access them.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

@Daug, I thought that the processing costs could be reduced by puting all your highend processors in a single building; And that was considered cloud computing. (from media crap i've read about it recently.)

i know SETI @ home and other computationally intensive projects try to distribute their processing to home machines - to tap that rather powerful resource - however I assumed the idea was to move away from this model and keep processors and hard drives in home computers to a minimum and do your processing and data storage in the 'cloud' of servers which you never see. (and which are relocating to iceland because it is colder there, and therefore easier to cool your processor, and also they have ample geothermal energy to power the processors... or so i've heard...)

it's a classic pump and dump stock scam - they 'sell' you news on the 'next big thing', the price goes from 10 cents to 15 cents a share, everyone who bought at 10 cents sells at a huge profit, and you're stuck with a worthless stock
zckls04 (100 D)

Cloud computing has been around since the 80s as a concept- it's far from a new thing. But computer processing power isn't really a significant issue anymore so it hasn't really taken off. For those who require vast amounts of computing power it's usually beneficial not to have to rely on third-parties as the data tends to be critical.

For the other 99% of the population computing power hasn't been an issue for years. Computers are replaced because of new features rather than extra power. The only people who need to constantly upgrade are gamers, and they obviously need the power to be local as it's mostly graphics rendering.

It will never happen, because it's completely unnecessary.

some of the questions i would have is whether or not the "server" of this idea has access to all your personal files (im guessing so). additionally, if theres no way to contact information (address, phone number, etc) then its definitely a scam.
