University
I am signing up for my classes next semester.

I want very badly to sign up for all kinds of different subjects. I enjoy being diverse.

However I fear it may mean I would be in college for five years instead of four.

Is it worth it? At this hour I am thinking yes, but what are your thoughts, Forum?

Do it while you can. You might even find something you love EVEN MORE and then add or switch majors :)

The world will end in 2012 anyway, so what difference does it make?

lol nice.

yeah and how about double majoring i kinda feel like i want to do that too

i guess what i'm asking is, since time is our most valuable commodity, is it worth spending on education that i dont strictly need, but that i want?

Depends on what are your major(s)/minor and what other courses do you plan to take? I'd suggest to go for diversity and stick to one major.

I was convinced I was going for a Computer Science major, but got bored with math after the sophomore year and totally changed course to business/humanitarian subjects. In the end, I'd have to say some of the most enjoyable classes for me were Astronomy, Ancient History, International Relations and Shakespeare. Hardly the most practical ones for every-day life (or work), but I remember more from these than from the half a dozen calculus/statistics/applied math classes.

If your program allows it, take a variety of courses in your first year, then try and pick something for your major/minor in your second, if possible (if not, keep being a generalist).

If you can afford it, an additional year at school might be beneficial to you. Another suggestion I have is rather than taking a bunch of extra courses, try to get involved with school clubs and that sort of thing. I found it rewarding.

In my experience, having a good degree from a University with a good reputation is more important than the actual subject of the degree, because it proves (to a potential employer, say) that you have the intelligence to get a good degree. When you get into industry, you will probably want to pursue technical qualifications and memberships in any case.

So I would say go for the subjects you are most interested in, and that way you will have a more rewarding experience.

Jamie +1

No one cares about what your degree is. The only exception is if you're going into the hard sciences, and then only maybe.

University isn't about learning what to do, it's about proving to "The Man" that you aren't an imbecile.

What do you want to do???
Think about a job that is enjoyable and you will never work.
If money is your main concern become a tax lawyer. You are at UT and you shouldn't have any problem with anything you attempt after that.

Most people I know outside of teachers work in a field that has nothing to do with their degree.

The IT field has a lot of computer science majors but most will tell you that their education has little to do with their skill level. Problem solving and analytical thought is what makes a good IT person.

A friend of mine is a developer (major-Geology) He believes the best developer in the world right now is probably 14 and has bad acne. Why? Because he has more time to research new stuff and think creatively about the applications without having to take time to pay bills, grocery shop, or take the kids to soccer practice...

@Thucy,

What are you majoring in. I'm a senior EE myself.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
30 Oct 09 UTC
Haha. Good advice all around. Especially BigZombieDude... I would like to join/start a dip club.. that would be really cool.

Are you at UT abgemacht? I'm a freshman government major.

And by the way to everyone, government is my major, I don't plan on changing. I was just wondering if it's a good idea to take all kinds of other classes too at the expense of perhaps my being here 5 years instead of 4. Oh and the double major I was thinking about was in French.

Id have to agree with Jamie and rlumley, unless you are going to use your degree specifically for employment it doesn't really matter what you get it in. All i would say is enjoy the time you are there in both your studies and your extra curricular and do whatever courses you will find most interesting. There will be no other time in your life that you will the opportunity to do this...unless you work for Pixar!

I did Philosophy and History for my degree and i threw in film studies, english, theology a bit of law and some physics theory! Hows that for making it fun :) Ive also done Criminology whilst ive been working and its far better doing a degree full time...

Dip Club, pole dancing and yoga....and probably in that order :)

government major eh? no wonder you play diplomacy.
Centurian (3257 D)

I agree strongly with the extracurriculors. I've met some of my best friends there, and they are good at filling out applications. They won me my last summer job.

I went hard into Economics into my second year, didn't enjoy it as much as I did in first year, and switched into History. I think ultimately you might look at those course descriptions and want to take so many classes, but taking more than you need will just be a burden. Perhaps give yourself an option for more variety, but don't commit yourself too it. Lots of people I know burn out, and are desperate to graduate. Is university going to be fun in your fifth year when lots of your friends leave?

A year of your life is serious business. You only get so many. Especially in your twenties, which is your prime. Don't deal it away lightly.

PS You can always supplement with summer courses.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
30 Oct 09 UTC
ah yes summer courses.

good call. lol

well i dunno i mean... i think i would be okay with being here a fifth year, since i would be studying abroad. it's not like high school after all... which was just drudgery. but you make some good points.

i kind of have this view, maybe its foolish, but i just want to learn whatever i can. whatever i think i can do, i want to learn how. you said i was in my prime, and you're right, so i want to learn how to do all the things i've never known how to do... all the way from fixing cars and shooting guns to microfinance and jazz clarinet. but through it all government and IR is my passion so i want to major in that still.

however i think i'm going to go to grad school so maybe i could still take some of those kinds of classes there. what is grad school actually like, besides just writing your thesis?

Destroy unit bug.
When I open the board, I get a pop-up which says "TypeError: this.Unit is undefined"
Then rather than "Update" and "Finalize", I have greyed out buttons which say "Save" and "Lock"
So I can't enter my destroy order.

Who else is watching South Park tonight?
Supposed to be about Japanese whaling. The preview was pretty funny, looks to be a big improvement on the last week's wrestling episode, which I found rather underwhelming.

Just a quick question. Have a look at this game: gameID=13498

Why do Italy and France finish as "survived" when they had no SC's left at the end of the game?

When did the message window stop putting linefeeds in the right places?
It used to be that you could read all of someones in-game message, but now, at least on my screen (1280x800 and using Firefox) the end of some lines of text aren't visible. Four or 5 characters can be lost.

Longest Diplomacy game
What's the longest game you've ever played? I'm currently in one (Robin hood Steal from the Russians Give to the aus) which is in Spring 1913 and has no signs of a quick finish if you want to check it out. Have any games you know of ever reached 1920?
