Another pause request
Can you please pause these games manually?

Last turn everyone voted on pausing the game, yet nothing happened.

http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=12090
Same here, everyone voted and nothing is happening.

I have a third game where only Italy didn't pause last turn, and we're close to the deal again. If everyone would hit the pause and it wouldn't trigger the action, could you take care of this game too?

Of course none of the games got paused. Please tell me why I should I stay playing at this... I better not say what I think of the site and its staff...
StevenC. (1047 D(B))

The staff is busy as it is. E-mail them at [email protected]. You might get a faster response. I did.
spyman (424 D(G))

@Jurkasz, can you see the word unpause next to each of the players names. If not then someone has yet to unpause.
One of my games was paused before the upgrade. Afterwards I clicked the pause button (to unpause) but then the button changed to cancel pause. I then had to press pause again, and then one more time before my vote changed to unpause. I figured that this might have been because we paused before the upgrade.
spyman (424 D(G))
10 Aug 09 UTC
Btw the "staff" are all volunteers. They are all awesome in my opinion. I think there might be a few teething problems after the recent dramatic changes, but we just have to be a little patient about that.
Jurkasz (153 D)
10 Aug 09 UTC
spyman: it's not about unpausing, it is about the pausing not working. Look at the recent few pages of the forum, you can see at least a few threads every page about the games not pausing even if every player voted. This case happened to two of my games too. Now I'm back but seeing what happened I'm not sure if I want to continue playing...

Steven: what are they busy with? This bug exists for a while but nothing happens. If they are too busy, than they should hire more people probably, at least that's what everyone would do, no?
spyman (424 D(G))
10 Aug 09 UTC
@Jurkasz. Sorry I misread your post.
I think once a mod sees your post or reads your email they will help you out.
StevenC. (1047 D(B))
10 Aug 09 UTC
As spyman so clearly said, the staff are all volunteers. They have to work on other sites as well, not just this one.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
10 Aug 09 UTC
Sorry about the delay. As said, [email protected] is the email address to contact for a response- with the forum and PMs it is all too easy to miss messages.

I've paused the first two, but in the third, does Italy actually want a pause?
spyman (424 D(G))
10 Aug 09 UTC
Actually they are fellow players. There's four mods and Kestas (the site creator). A couple of other people might have helped out with some of the code (I think).
I like the fact this site is not a commercial site with "hired staff", that the mods are just like us, play games and contribute to the forum like anyone else. Plus they do help people a lot. But its not "dial a request" - it'll happen when they realized there is an issue.

Jurkasz (153 D)

@TGM: thanks for your help, but as you can see I was requested the pause on Friday when I was going away for an extended weekend trip. Now I'm back (earlier than expected) so I don't need the pause anymore.

@spyman: if there are four mods, how can they ALL miss a request like this when similar issues popping up frequently? I'm also working as a volunteer mod on a couple of sites, and that's why I'm quite frustrated about this. I was kicked out from one of my games, another one is totally screwed up because the majority of the players thought the game is paused while it wasn't.
"Steven: what are they busy with? This bug exists for a while but nothing happens. If they are too busy, than they should hire more people probably, at least that's what everyone would do, no?"

Yes, they should hire more staff with the oodles of money they make off this site.

Fees to join site: Zero dollars
Fees to play game: Zero dollars

@Jurkasz, how did you get kicked out of one of your games? What do you mean?

Its a shame about your games. I think you were unlucky this time. But things won't always turn out like that.

@Xapi, "Mastercard is a world-wide company, you know?"

Yes, doesn't mean their commercials are the same in every market.

DJ, not necesarily, but such a long running campaign, that really relates to the brand, is likely to.

Nobody has yet to tell me what a "wicked googly(sp?)" is in Cricket (see the Jerry Seinfeld "priceless" commercial).
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
10 Aug 09 UTC
A googly is a spin bowler's ball that turns "the wrong way". Normally used with leg spinners
Xapi,
You forget there are frequently massive cultural differences between the US and the rest of the world. What sells (or is funny) in the US doesn't necesssarily apply elsewhere. I have no idea whether the word 'priceless' translates, or whether some German will be sitting around saying 'Huh? I don't get it'. Hence my 'non-Americans who MAY not' (emphasis added).

(Hence the urban legends about the Chevrolet Vega and Joanne Loves Chachi. While both of those were false, there have been some campaigns that just don't translate well in different cultures)
LOL, I always figured googly was a nonsense word he was using in that commercial.
Xapi (194 D)
10 Aug 09 UTC
DJ, I don't. That campaign has been adapted to every culture and subculture possible.

I understand your "may", but it's just not the case.
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
10 Aug 09 UTC
It's wonderful though when ideas don't survive translation. One of the classics in Sweden, where I live, is the real estate giant Locum. On their logo, they spell it locum, with a small L. Some genius decided that they should use a heart instead of an O in the logotype for a christmas campaign. The result?

http://walkthewalk09.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/locum.jpg

They probably didn't know English slang that well...
Xapi, then congratulations. Not sure why you feel the need to argue with me all the time, but thanks for your edification on the prevalence of Mastercard commercials.
Xapi (194 D)

It was just a comment. Don't take it personal.
Toby Bartels (361 D)
10 Aug 09 UTC
It was just a snarky comment that didn't actually explain the facts, but merely implied specious reasoning.
Xapi (194 D)
10 Aug 09 UTC
What does specious mean?

I'm asking honestly, never heard the word before.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
10 Aug 09 UTC
Basically it means 'insincere'.
Xapi (194 D)
10 Aug 09 UTC
Well, I wasn't implying anything, much less that DJ was being "insencere". Although I may have been a bit snarky.
Toby Bartels (361 D)
10 Aug 09 UTC
My dictionary says that ‘specious’ originally meant good-looking and now mostly means (to quote it) ‘plausible but false’. But I mostly see and use it to describe reasoning or a thought process, rather than a factual statement or a conclusion, so I would say ‘plausible but invalid’. (That is, it doesn't ultimately matter whether the conclusion of the reasoning is correct or not, but whether the method of reasoning is logical.)

My comment was a bit snarky too, so I'll rephrase it, and I'll remove ‘specious’ while I'm at it. Here's the replacement version:

It was a snarky comment that didn't actually explain the facts, but implied that DJ should have been able to figure it out. And as DJ pointed out in replies, there was no way to figure it out for certain. Only later did you say that you knew for sure. So I hope that you can see why the conversation was frustrating for DJ.
Xapi (194 D)
10 Aug 09 UTC
Well, to me, the fact that Mastercard is a world-wide company that uses the same campaign world-wide is something that most people know.

Did I need to be snarky about it? No, I'm sorry.

But when I said "I understand your 'may', but it's just not the case", I agreed with him that it was understandable for him to not know, and stated that this was in fact a world-wide campaign recognizable by almost anyone in the world (At least with access to a PC with Internet).

I don't know why he kept being frustrated after that...
Toby Bartels (361 D)
10 Aug 09 UTC
I'll let DJ answer that if he wants. I'm sorry for my snarkiness too.
Hmmm, nope Toby, I don't want, though you were pretty accurate.

Should there be a Punishment for going CD (civil disorder/leaving a game)?
Should there be a Punishment for a player going CD / leaving a game?
I would argue for a there being a punishment if a player does it more than once per every 4 months or something, but i am not sure what a good punishment would be? (points taken away is easy, but also easily ignored, perhaps a reprimand private message, or a cool off period where they can't join new games, etc.)

If I made a move on Constantinople with an army, and in the next turn my army enters it without changing the color of the territory (just with it's small square with my color), does that mean that I didn't conquer the territory? Could I move the army somewhere else (ex. Bulgaria) and still hold Constantinople, or do I lose it? Thanx in advance!
