Not having diplomacy in Diplomacy makes it a very different game. I like Gunboat, but in small doses.

I don't know if I like the intent of these games to begin with, as Speaker says, there's no real diplomacy..
But I think both this and public press are especially annoying in a format like this because there's no way to know if the other players are cheating. (i.e. communicating with priv messages).

Honour Rules all the way.
I like Gunboat because it can be played when you're more busy (like exam season!)

Although not on this site, a number of people view gunboat as also being an anonymous game.

Gunboating and public press only are easier in F2F games with few people.

I've never really understood the point, although I did join one that was supposedly public-press only... and discovered nobody was following the rule. Makes me wish you could read the public press of all games before you join them.

I also remember seeing an old article somewhere about an elaborate system of pseudo-communication using fake moves and unnecessary support and other tricks to telegraph your intentions, which sort of begs the question, why bother?

It's a fun variant - I think it hones your tactical skills, because there is nothing else.

It does require honour and trust on an app like this, and I'd never stake a lot of points on it (for example, on FB I'm playing a Gunboat game which includes the top player on the app, and it's a 15 buy in)

@Ninja The one real problem with Gunboat on this site is that you can't enter illegal moves. Using F Lon to support Par->Bur is a great way to say "I'd like to be allies". but you can't do that here.

Ninja, it can be a challenge to ally with someone, but when it happens it is a beautiful thing and makes any verbally or written coordination look like child's play. That is the reason to play gunboat.

No diplomacy? Of course not. I have had some of my strongest alliances in a gunboat game!
