HongKonger or Mainlander descent?

Generally, all CBC's I meet are children of HongKongers (always Cantonese), and all first-generation immigrants are mainlanders (thus usally Mandarin).

It is quite a striking demographic divide.

As the Cantonese come from the main southern trading ports like Guangzhou/Hong Kong they have been heading overseas for hundreds of years... which explains why so many Offshore Chinese are Cantonese across the world.

Main Han Chinese are only just starting to export themselves abroad in numbers.

My parents are mainlanders. I haven't noticed that divide, though to be honest, I've been more immersed in North American culture than Asian culture. I've spent at least 6 years in cities with extremely little asian representation, and even in more multicultural cities I find most of my friends are not asian.

That's one of the great things about Canada, it's so multicultural and accepting. Other than Australia and America to a lesser extent, I'm not sure where else I would really fit in. I feel like a foreigner in Asian countries, and every other country doesn't have very much Asian representation and I feel less welcome.

Punjabi And Kashmiri Indians? That is the earliest usage of the term paki I know of. The idea that paki = pure seems to have been somewhat retro-fitted.

But if you do come from the sub-continent, you qualify as full asians.

Me? I'm an Anglo Saxon with Norman and Celtic blood living in HK, rather close to Mr Braveheart in fact.

Well over 300 years? That's pretty early in the migration to the West (assuming you don't have native American blood). And of course it doesn't matter what race you are, but it is interesting to know a little about people's backgrounds.

On that note, It always strikes me as odd that Americans refer to themselves as Scots or Irish or Italian or African or German or whatever they ancestry may be.... especially when it's often great grandparents or further back. When they are fundamentally just American really.

I for example have a Spanish grandfather, but I refer to and think of myself as Scots (& British... but let's leave that debate for now).

@braveheart- yup, my family traced back our ancestors and i have a ton that were in the revolutionary war (dont remember which side...). no native american blood. and its beause americans have roots from all over the place, but yes, in the end were just americans.
