Global Tab
I've twice been in games where some eejit has posted a private message to me on the Global tab by accident - which kinda messes up whatever cunning plan you might have been devising....

There's an argument for a warning message to appear when a Global message is posted, or at least when the first Global Message is posted:

"This is the GLOBAL tab. Are you SURE you want to post this message to ALL players? Are you SURE that you're not, in fact, some kind of moron?"

Personally, I don't think it's a such a good idea, but I thought I'd open the matter for discussion....

Would anyone be interested in a seven game WTA league?
I would like to be able to play the same six opponents in a set of seven games where we each get to play as each country exactly once. A gamemaster would be needed to set up the arrangements but that would not be difficult...

The snag is that we could not do it in php... as we do not have control over the way the system allocates countries.

Just wondering aloud really. I have thought about this before a few times...

The pots could be small, but the overall results would be interesting.

We now have enough for two leagues (more on this below)

I reckon that we could do it within the original framework of phpDip. One league could get going, and then others could start up afterwards.

If everyone chipped in 20 points per game, that would be 140 per game, 980 over the course of the league. I know that it wouldn't quite go to Ghost's system, but the table can be updated after each game according to:

Played Won Drawn Survived Defeated Supply Centres

If there's a tie then you progress along the line in priority of left to right - Wins rank first, draws second, etc. with number of supply centres would be the final tie breaker.

This could easily get going quite quickly, though obviously there's the problem that you aren't going to be able to play each country only once...

So far, people interested on a first come first served basis, then ranking system based on minimum qualification of 5 wins for the First League and ranked on win percentages (not sure if that's particularly fair, but it is the top league). Second league done on the same system, but with the fewer wins.

First League
Braveheart 9wins (45%)
Sean 10wins (31%)
Theghostmaker 7wins (33%)
Figlesquidge 17wins (28%)
Chrispminis 11wins (28%)
Flashman 10wins (20%)
cgwhite32 6wins (20%)

Second League
Abgemacht 4wins (25%)
Canaduh 6wins (19%)
Thewonderllama 5wins (15%)
xgongiveit2ya55 2wins (15%)
Gobbledydook 5wins (11%)
menace3society no wins
Shisuren no wins

I think that would be ok. Then a two up two down system from league to league. If there's enough to start a third league, then by all means go ahead, but lets get this going now!

I like the simplicity,

but still hanker after the chance to play all seven countries in turn. I would like to hear from our resident code-writers as to how difficult it would be to arrange for players to be assigned specific countries...

Or, if one person, with admin access, could enter the user names against the countries, we can draw up on paper the actual arrangements and then enter them as agreed.

isnt this basically a round robin ish championship?
maybe we should wait until the 2007 championship game ends...(soon? the last game is being played now)then start up another one , 2008 round robin league cup. if we organise it then im sure we could have more than 14 players.
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
22 May 08 UTC
I don't think it's a championship. It's over a 'season' and you get to play everyone in a league format. With promotion and relegation, it will add more spice, and allow the people who would have got knocked out early to keep playing to avoid relegation/try for the second promotion spot.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
22 May 08 UTC
I don't think many people would mind if you started the next set now anyway - the final is well underway and I have already placed my bets on who will take the victory
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
22 May 08 UTC
I would like to see if it is possible to assign the nations. Of course there is nothing against starting the first game asap, although I would like to wait till 13th June, after my exams are over.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
22 May 08 UTC
Ghost: you're not doing STEP1 this year?
Sounds good, and the nations _can_ be assigned manually, but it would currently require work from kestas. I am in favour of adding this as an option into the site's GUI in the future, but after Faceboo-gate the code has remained close-source.
dearmore28 (527 D)

I will join the third league if there are enough players.
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
23 May 08 UTC
Looks like we're getting somewhere!! Happy to wait until Kestas has commented on ability to do the extra work or to assign nations. (think other sites have ability to express which nation you'd prefer from 1-7 something like FRGEATI)... though that might take longer to incorporate.

Regarding the scoring system - you're saying that someone who wins 1 game and does not survive the other 6 would be ranked in the table above someone who draws say 5 games? I think it might be better to use the existing points system and make all the games WTA. So the solo win of one game would be roughly equivalent to having a 3-way draw in 3 games. Open to suggestions on that one.

I'd still strongly suggest 3 up/3 down to keep it from getting stale and mixing up the people you play.

Also would like to have other peoples views on whether intra-season meta-gaming is permitted or not..... this would have a massive influence on the dynamics of the league format. (as stated before i'd be against this).
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
23 May 08 UTC
Might be over complicating things - but perhaps mixing up the games between say 5 Full Press and 2 No Press (or 4/3) might allow the season to finish sooner as well.

Or perhaps a seperate No Press league could be quite fun - gets around the meta-gaming issues and would certainly get through the games a lot sooner.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
23 May 08 UTC
Please no - lets have 7 identical games and see who's best at what.
Out of interest, how would the positioning of players be decided, around the map, as doing them randomly would probably stop you being all 7 nations
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
23 May 08 UTC
Fair enough - pls ignore the no press post!!

In terms of deciding the draw, I'd just trust someone to do a random draw using simple excel program. Ideally the players you border with would also be random (so you don't all just move round a country in each game - would get a bit boring).

Would also be interested to know if you are aware of which country you will get in each game prior to the start of the league or not.

I think Face-gate sounds better than Faceboo-gate... Or was that an attempt at Facebook-gate whic i marginall bette tha th late?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
23 May 08 UTC
I would have said Face-gate, but I wasn't sure enough people would understand what I was meaning, whilst facebook-gate just sounds rubbish!
I think knowing would be useful, because otherwise people who _are_ together in their first games *might* have an advantage to those who are near in several games, but not in the first set. I don't know, but giving everyone the same information seems fairer
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
23 May 08 UTC
Now all we need to know is whether we can get this up and running. Kestas/Figle - how soon could we sort out allocation of countries? Is it easy? Scoring system for the table sounds like it needs a bit of work though.

Perhaps you could award points based on positions - for example, 7 for a win, 6 for second etc going down in order of survival/elimination. That would mean that the better you did, the more points you get. It would also mean that placed draws would be taken into account. If it was a two way draw, I suppose the top two would get 6 points each? Or is there a fairer way of splitting the draws?

Well, my metagaming idea was concerned only with the one league idea. Obviously, with a tiered league system I would greatly discourage the metagaming, because it would not be the same 7 players, since there would be promotions and demotions.

I imagine that the number of people promoted and demoted will greatly effect the playing strategy. ie. 3 up/3 down (which I personally think we should use) will probably see a lot of 3-way draws among players who seek only the promotion into upper echelons, which is essentially what players would be playing for in a tiered league, rather than a direct win. With a don't get demoted second priority.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
24 May 08 UTC
three up three down would be pretty dynamic. I think it is probably best if at least three people stay in the same league- after all with three up three down most people will find themselves with 2 other people who they have played for a season already.
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
24 May 08 UTC
I would prefer a two up two down system personally. It means there's much more to fight for - you are more interested in playing if with the last game or two to play, the person at the bottom has a chance of getting out of the relegation zone if they win, for example. That won't be the case if it's three up three down. That means in most leagues the dynamism will be too much!

We now have the players, and we have the system pretty much agreed. I for one want to get started soon - how quickly can we get going?
menace3society (927 D)
24 May 08 UTC
I have little to no interest in playing in a league, but if you could get Kestas to give you the latest source, you could hack it up a bit to be a private server for the league. If you don't want to pay for hosting, someone with a computer (and inet connection) that's always on could set it up himself.
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
24 May 08 UTC
Oops - sorry, which means we are looking for one extra for league two. I think we really need Kestas to give us the go ahead to do this. Not sure if he's around?
sean (3490 D(B))
26 May 08 UTC
if kestas is busy and we cant get the league started this time how about a round robin championship? how many joined the 2007 cup?
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
26 May 08 UTC
Well, I'm not sure - I joined just after it had started, but you could easily do the league system within this site - just that the allocation of countries would not be one each for seven games - you could end up with Italy seven times! However I think that since it is random, it wouldn't be too bad. I say we just start it up and give it a go.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
26 May 08 UTC
I won't be able to play in the league before mid june, and indeed I'll probably be disappearing from the site apart from the 2007 final.
If you start before then fill my place, you have enough!

Meta-gaming?
Maybe I'm a bit too quick in my judgement, but how often do you see someone registering and taking over a country in CD on the same day (the only game he is playing in at the moment), and then moving in such a way as to leave all his available SCs open for the taking by another player (who just happens to move exactly in the right way, attacking without support and taking all SCs?

Well, you can see it here, with the new Austria giving up everything to Turkey: http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=3875

Can we do something about it, please?

Thanks,

D.

canute and TinTin are 'together' again. This is, at the very least, a meta-gaming situation, and more than likely, one multi-player.

If the game proceeds, then canute will win due to TinTin's slavish assistance, followed by TinTin's mysterious collapse.

BE FOREWARNED.

seriously reconsidering roosevelt
let my contextualize this. my family is half republican, half democrat, all northern. the northern democrats in the last century were solid union liberals and roosevelt supporters. contrary to the perception of the republicans as a southern & conservative party, however, in the north the history is very progressive & liberal. so it is a different tradition than the current republicans.

so here is the thing.

i have been watching speeches today by roosevelt. now, during my public school days, i was taught by the teacher union history program (not a bad one, i scored perfect on the tests) i was taught roosevelt with lincoln were the high points of US history, but especially roosevelt. if you have also been to US public school, no doubt you have been taught roosevelt = new deal = victory in WW2.

however, i have as i mentioned, been watching these FDR videos. dude's a fucking fascist. no way around it. very, very scary. i am actually questioning the whole thing now - how much of that honorable tradition is a lie? you know?

yes, i'll give you the whole country in depression, the whole world in peril, the ultimately liberal views of the US prevailing = good for globe. but FDR? he was basically a dictator - this makes me very uncomfortable with this period in history, and this is a period which is emphasized in public school as the key to modern america. its a very disturbing thing, if you can imagine.

i am really wondering what is the truth behind my republican relatives and their philosophy of opposing the new deal and isolationism at the time of WW2. granted, you probably have to fight those nazi bastards. but under a dicator? chilling - anyone know what i mean?

latest improvements
Hi there,

I am back after a long break. I looked at the help and tried to figure out, what improvements have been made since half a year ago. At that time, we had some issues about the adjudicator, now it is claimed phpdiplomacy has adopted all the official rules. Specifically, I would like to ask:
1. How are double-coast provinces handled? Can we now move to Spain north coast?
2. Can we now retreat fleets from double-coast provinces?
3. Can we still dislodge our own units?
4. Can we now support a convoyed landing?

Congratulations to the maker(s) of the site, and thank you for your clarifications.
