Bogus Players
Recently I've seen a rise in people with close names to those of respected members. The most obvious one of these is "Civil Disorder Kestas" - #5088
There have also been many accounts that have names similar, but in many cases I don't think this is due to cheating, more down to the fact that when people use slight variations on their real names others are likely to have similar variations if they share the name. What do you think should be the treatment for this issue?
I think that forcing a player to rename his account if it is virtually the same as another might not be a bad idea, but warning should be given. When someone makes an account like that noted above I am rather less sympathetic. I hope the player in question will explain themselves, but I am very suspicious. After all, it seems unlikely to me that they would know how confusing that name was if they didn't already have an account here, not to mention that it seems to be deliberately deceitful to me...

I thought that - given the right priority - this might be something that can be added. (Sorry Kestas!)

What is new here?
Hello all,

I came back after a two-month break and noticed a lot of good news here -- WTA games, new adjudicator, new graphics etc. I tried to find a summary of all changes in the forum, but it isn't accessible any more. Would anyone be so kind and tell me the most important changes, especially in adjudicator?

Thank you very much!

Game Over - Game Won By xxxxx
Any chance that this text could be WHITE instead of BLACK as it doesn't show up on the map.

Obviously this is a very unimportant request :)

It would be even better if the text was White with a black shadow (or vice versa)

:)

Meta-gamers/Multi-accounter?
Game: http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=3122

I suspect player(s) 1357, slcl and bernielau. They have helped each other so many times and germany could have gone into france with get france's SCs, though this is not the major reason for me to suspect him/them. I have at least two screenshots about the "Last logged in" times. It has been times when their "Last logged in" times were within the same 10 mins, so that's what makes me suspect them. Kestas, could you please investigate? No matter it proves me right or wrong, I think an investigation is necessary. Other players agree with me?

Thanks.

Possible new features?
Now that the adjudicator is pretty much perfect, it's time for people like me to total jerks my suggesting more things for kestas to do once he's done everything he already wants to do.

Thing #1 I'd suggest is perhaps an option for anonymous games (e.g., games in which the identity of every player is hidden until the end of the game). This would allow players who acquire a... reputation for unsavory play to get into fairer games, and would make researching your opponents impossible.

(The only problem is the higher risk of multi-ing, but I would think that simply putting a limit on how many games you have to have played to participate would make that not so much a problem.)

Cowrdly play or strategic alliance?
I would like the opinions of veteran players here. I am in a game where I have 16 scs, a player has 5 another has 13. The player with 13 is asking for a draw, but could easily win the game and eliminate the player who has 5. Is this a weak, cowardly move or somehow noble and I am missing the point?
Puebloune (608 D)

This is the game : http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=2895

This is my answer in global chat :

1-I have one win mostly because I played badly to start with.
2-Habs and I are friends IRL, I am not denying that. But please take note that we're not always together, in fact its the only game I am not raping his ass.
3- In this particular game, I decided not to attack him.
4- A draw changes nothing for you, since you get the same amount of points. In fact you're the one finishing with more SC (so technically a win).
5-The Habs won 7-5 against the Senators tonite :)

And I'll add this. Diplomacy is a war game and I intend to play to win. I do have lots of IRL friends that plays here, but I dont plan to carebear them, sometimes I'll kick their ass and win braggins rights, sometimes I will just give my word and live with it.

In this very case, I made an alliance, and I am just respecting it. In other games, I am actually crushing him, but its good for me that he know I can respect my word.... from time to time... :)

no 4 is wrong- in a draw ALL players get equal points regardless of the draw. mr 5 sc will get the same points as both the other players
sean (3490 D(B))
25 Mar 08 UTC
sorry mistake - regardless of the number of sc they have
Puebloune (608 D)
25 Mar 08 UTC
Mmhmm, you're telling me that mister 5SC will get the same amount of points?

I must say that doesnt fair, neither for me or BrianJSmitty in this case. I'll go check the facts to make sure its the case, but base on this, I could reconsider the draw.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
25 Mar 08 UTC
Why is that not fair?
If a player is still alive there must be a reason for it. The reasons a larger nation might not attack them are something along the lines of:
1) They committed to an alliance. They should then share the reward
2) Another player is defending them. It is not your choice how they end
3) They are holding an impossible location. They desearve to live
I know this isn't all, but it gives the general idea. There was a whole article on it somewhere

I have to disagree with you. To expand upon what fig said a little: a draw is an equal less-than-win-more-than-survival for all parties. If you are forced into or talked into forging an outright victory by another player, no matter how small, they gain a full measure of the draw. It in and of itself is a deterrent against unnecessary draws. I also feel that it is the only fair way to distribute points in a draw.
dangermouse (5551 D)
25 Mar 08 UTC
Agreed with Fig and Llama. Draws are an unfortunate but sometimes necessary part of the game. All players are (and should be) given equal payouts in a draw.

I just looked at the game, I guess I misinterpreted what was said at the beginning. This is another example of how the points-per-SD setup can be horribly wrong. Officially, Turkey's options should be to either break his alliance with Italy and LOSE (get nothing) or keep the alliance to force France into a DRAW (1/3 of the victory). His options in this game however are go for the DRAW (and get 1/3 still) or break with Italy and pick up about 15/34ths.

My updated recommendations for Turkey are:
1) If you're grubbing for points, don't accept the draw and attack Italy.
2) If you want to stay both truer to the game as well as honor your alliance with Italy (who is the reason why you haven't lost yet) then force the draw.

So in answer to the original question; yes, Turkey is being noble by forcing the draw. Three cheers for Puebloune.

Danger - that is true. On the other hand it is in Italy's interests to try and persuade Turkey to take the draw. Also, I expect people will start paying a lot more attention to players stats soon, so taking the draw will start to look better than a close loss
dangermouse (5551 D)

Why do you expect closer stat scrutiny soon?

I would like to thank everyone who commented here. I meant no disrespect to Pueb in this thread. I am just trying to gain an understanding of his position.

I have won 4 of the 8 games I have played in due to a win at all cost strategy. I just don't understand the play-for-a-draw theory. Am I the only one that thinks playing for a draw is kind of a "nancy" way to play?
sean (3490 D(B))
26 Mar 08 UTC
no disrespect intended but then in the second paragraph you go on to liken his style of play as " nancy" like.

hmm you should be running in the American elections with that kind of logic.

Retreat Rules?
Dear all,

Can someone explain the way retreats are handled on php dip.

In the 'real' game you can retreat to any unoccupied Province as far as I recall.

If two units retreat to the same province (either both your own units, or yours and another players) then they are both destroyed/disbanded.

However there have been occasions where my retreat options are more limited than they should have been (ie I cannot retreat to a province where an attack came on - which makes sense I guess) but on some occasions I have not been able to retreat to, for example, a connected (but free) SC Province.

However I notice that sometimes I CAN retreat to a similar province, so really I was wondering if anyone had the full 'breakdown' of the retreat phase.

I have checked the FAQ and it doesn't really mention retreats (other than it being a phase) and I have checked the 0.70 adjudication code but I ain't clever enough to work it out from that.

Any help appreicated :)

Interesting Retreat Senarios
What happens if 2 units belonging to 2 different nations are dislodged and both only have one space to retreat to?

What if one of the units has only one space to retreat to while the other has an available second option but chooses the contested space?

Criteria for Game
What do you think about adding more criteria to join a game that you create?

At the moment, we only have the password and the point requirements, but more things could be done:

for example:

1- allow only players of certain ranks (yes, we have minimum limits with the points system, but what if one is a new player and does not want any experienced people?)
2- Allow only players before/after a certain creation date (I must say I'm not fond of many of the newer players..)
3- perhaps things related to win/defeat/draw ratios, and so on

New game
http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=3342
Just a small WTA, 5pts. I know there's a minimum point count you have to have to start one of these, but obviously this one is open to everyone. Main reason for it is that I haven't played winner takes all for nearly a year, and so I really need to get back into it!

Btw, whats the current view on advertising games? I know it says to on the 'new game' page, but I think we'd do better if that was removed, or if we had a single thread for all games people wanted to share...

http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=3100#orders

Turkey is not only allowing Russia to win when he could have easily crushed him, he is so obviously setting it up so that Russia will win with as many SC as possible. Italy told me that they are friends, but he won't specify if he meant in real life. Join dates are 2 days apart, and they are in a number of games (of which they don't always ally). It seems to me like a "hey buddy I'll let you win this one then you let me win the next one" type of situation, or just really really bad sportsmanship and Turkey not wanting to win for some peculiar reason.
