The Scottish Play: Independence for the Scots?

I'm nowhere near well enough informed to comment on whether or not that's a good idea, culturally, financially, or otherwise, so I defer to the British WebDippers--what do you think about this, yea or nay, and are you worried they'll take 12th Doctor with them if they do? Is there interest in a REAL tournament on this site?
Looking at having a real cash buy-in. First, second and third places receive a cash prize, proceeds go to the site. Additional prizes for best country, and a few other notables (best stab, etc.). Maybe getting the site to put an emblem on your profile page (after all, we're paying money) for awards earned.

Let’s design a new sport that minimizes the need for expensive gear and controversial refereeing. Additionally that players should not end up dead or in the hospital. What shall this sport be?

Most supply centers in a single turn?
So recently, I was in a game where I was able to convince someone to give me his 3 home centers, another center, and support me to 3 centers occupied by other nations in a single turn, all so that he would survive the game. I went from 11 centers to 18 all in one turn. Do I was curious, what's the most supply centers everyone has captured in a turn. It would be difficult to do more than 9 I think, but I guess not impossible?

5 min "live" game questions
I'm pretty new to the site and intrigued by the "live" 5 min cycle games. Are they literally 5 minute rounds or is there a lot of pausing? Do people communicate over the messaging system during them? In general, how long of a block of time do you need to set aside to play in them? Thanks in advance, any advice is appreciated.

Rotating Diplomacy
Is there a way to play so that...
ag7433 (927 D(S))
09 Sep 14 UTC
Each Player controls 1 country as normal.

After 1901, the orders are rotated to the country to your "left", in whichever pre-defined order. The object is that each phase the rotation continues so that you can 'control' another country in the best interst of you / your alliance.

Example,
England open 1901 in traditional northern opening, Spring 1902 the rotation begins so that (example) Turkey will place the orders for the English units. Normal press still ensues. England pressures Turkey to make his desired moves. Other players try to influence Turkey on England's units moves. Turkey weighs all of this, and then still is concerned about his units controlled by another player.

Maybe the builds & retreats remain your own.

Has anyone done this? Would it be possible on this site?

Sounds like true chaos.. I can't imagine that it would be possible for someone to be able to win.

In what sense would the player who *started* as Turkey still actually be "Turkey" if he was controlling England's units and some other player was controlling Turkey's units??
jmo1121109 (3812 D)

No, no one has done this, yes it would be possible, though a decent amount of work for a mod to manage. If you get enough interested people email [email protected] and we'll work something out.

Jmo,

This may be a good game for the Dummies.
ag7433 (927 D(S))

As "turkey" controls the other countries, he'd do so in a manner beneficial to Turkey. He also would get the build/disband/retreat phases for his own. Also he'll get his own cycle naturally.

Maybe only the fall turn would cycle?

I feel it would very much amp up the Diplomacy required so you would need to influence so many more aspects of the game. Alliances would be even more crucial.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
09 Sep 14 UTC
Oh hmm, I was thinking a country swap every year, though the dummies would be another way to go about it.
ag7433 (927 D(S))
09 Sep 14 UTC
Order or rotation being, 1-7 (alphabetical). You still own your "home" country.

Turkey, when they control Russia, may move out of the DMZ. Italy, when they control Russia may move back in DMZ. etc... for that turn Turkey would be propositioning Italy to keep out of Black Sea..

Maybe too confusing!
Jamiet99uk (808 D)

This sounds like utter nonsense to me, I'm afraid. Good luck to anyone who tries it!

the problem is, if turkey is winning with 17 SC and ive got turkey but cant get 18, and the next guy would for sure get it, im completely sabotaging so the next guy cant win
I think the point is that each person is one country and one country only. They want that country to do as well as possible. However, each year you switch which countries' orders you put in. So you would be playing for the best of your one country the entire time, and your press would be for that too. A solo for country x is a win for the person who originally had country x, not for the person who 'controlled' it when the orders were put in. I think it's an interesting idea, rather complicated, but interesting. I think you would have to control your country more than 1/7th of the time though.

so it will probably turn into a draw. Not uncommon

I would NOT be a fan. Last thing I'd want is to pass control if my emire that I worked hard for just to see that position screwed. This game would have no real sense of ownership.
ag7433 (927 D(S))

SD, yeah you get it.

There's a board game called Pandemic where a phase in the game's turn (Epidemic?) will randomly & possibly exponentially grow the viruses. This is a similar concept of trying to achieve your goal with an external influence actively fighting against you.

Maybe best for f2f, if at all.

I've played a sort of similar thing before:

Everyone submits orders for every unit. The order that has the greatest number of votes is the one carried out.
WardenDresden (239 D(B))

Honestly, I would be far more interested in playing mendax's proposed version than the one you suggest ag7433. I think the game would end up stalemating far too quickly, and would be rather frustrating.

The voted moves thing interests me because you can try to mess up another alliance's moves, but they can also lobby with players to try and protect the moves.
numberwang (245 D)

This would be really hard to keep balanced, but its an interesting idea. If the rotation order was set in stone nations like Russia or Austria would have bigger advantages (or disadvantages) as they would have more neighbors and would be able to more directly affect their home territories, whereas England or Turkey wouldn't have as much influence.

And it doesn't seem like anyone has any incentive to play in a non-trolley way, especially if there is a set rotation order. If I know that France won't control me as England for another few years, I may as well just screw with him as much as possible in the mean time.

And if the rotation order is random, that brings up an even more obvious problem with the game just being completely stupid. What if I'm England and I move Turkey 3 turns in a row?

An interesting idea to consider, but it doesn't seem like it'd make practical sense.

What has The Internet done to Education?
I don’t have kids, and I was just about out of college when the Internet struck (collecting my first paychecks elsewhere as Netscape went public in 1995), so I have never had any experience with what The Internet has done to education. Do students bother learning facts anymore? Is Google everyone’s external brain? Does anyone know anything? Is everyone a plagiarist? What gives?
