The Tennessee Titans used to be the Houston Oilers before they moved. The Texans were an expansion club back in like 04 or 05 and they only recently had any success (and plummeted back down this past season)

I'd rather if you'd asked for the *British* definition, but there is actually an answer to that - in the UK a city is either:

- A settlement which has been recognised as a city since 1540 when the modern dioceses were founded, by virtue of having its own cathedral,

or:

- A settlement to which city status has subsequently been officially granted by the Monarch (although in practice the decision is made by the Home Office and sealed by the Monarch as a matter of formality).

From 1540 until the early 20th Century, only settlements with cathedrals were considered cities in the UK.

With the exception of the City of Bath, which only had an abbey.

Really? Did you ever expect it to be a hockey town? :-)

It's up the state. In New York, where I grew up, it is based on level of governmental autonomy and administration. They are completely self-governed (according to their charters), exist within a single county (NYC being an exception) and provide pretty much all governmental services to the resident. Towns and villages provide less services and have less autonomy.

With a team like the Texans, I don't blame any Houstonians for remaining a fan of the Oilers (not the Titans...).

Anyway, luckily I've been a Seahawks fan my whole life, a contrarian choice which paid off big time last season, and probably will again this season. Fuck yea

It really doesn't take much more than a political drive to turn a town into a city or a reasonably sized community into a town in the US. Some places, like that place in Wyoming, do it for attention.

In NY, anything that is not incorporated into a city or an Indian reservation is called a town. Towns have to be self-contained within a county.

Toronto have a great team heading into this years NBA Season, they'll make the East Semi's for definite this year. And only missed out last season by a hair.

Sure they've been pretty unsuccessful over the past decade, but it's really looking up lately, well in the NBA at least.
