I like what the University of Chicago economist John Cochrane has to say about Europe's debt fiasco.

No wonder European socialists are so depressed.

Europe is as full of bad ideas as it is of bad debts.

Europeans leaders think their job is to stop "contagion," to "calm markets." They blame "speculation" for their troubles. They keep looking for the Big Announcement that will soothe markets into rolling over another few hundred billion euros of debt. Alas, the problem is reality, not psychology, and governments are poor psychologists. You just can't fill a trillion-euro hole with psychology.

Bailouts are the real threat to the euro. The European Central Bank has been buying Greek, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish debt. It has been lending money to banks that, in turn, buy the debt. There is strong pressure for the ECB to buy or guarantee more. When the debt finally defaults, either the rest of Europe will have to raise trillions of euros in fresh taxes to replenish the central bank, or the euro will inflate away.
Leaving the euro would also be a disaster for Greece, Italy and the others. Reverting to national currencies in a debt crisis means expropriating savings, commerce-destroying capital controls, spiraling inflation and growth-killing isolation. And getting out won’t help these countries avoid default, because their debt promises euros, not drachmas or lira.

Defenders think that devaluing would fool workers into a bout of “competitiveness,” as if people wouldn’t realize they were being paid in Monopoly money. If devaluing the currency made countries competitive, Zimbabwe would be the richest country on Earth. No Chicago voter would want the governor of Illinois to be able to devalue his way out of his state’s budget and economic troubles. Why do economists think Greek politicians are so much wiser?
The latest plan calls for Europe to be tougher in enforcing deficit rules that are similar to the ones that they blithely ignored for 10 years. Sure, a directive from Brussels is really going to get the Greeks to shape up. Imagine how well it would work if the International Monetary Fund or the United Nations tried to veto U.S. budget deficits. (That is, if our Congress passed budgets to begin with.) This plan is mostly a way to let the ECB save face and buy up bad debt with freshly printed euros.

President Nicolas Sarkozy of France said Greece is like Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. and its collapse would bring down the financial system. Greece isn’t Lehman. It doesn’t have trillions of dollars of offsetting derivatives contracts. It isn’t a broker-dealer, whose failure would freeze all sorts of assets. Its creditors don’t have the legal right to seize assets owed to counterparties. Greece is just a plain-vanilla sovereign borrower, like those that have been defaulting since Edward III stiffed the Perruzzi bank in the 1340s.
Banks’ Debt
Sovereign default would damage the financial system, however, for the simple reason that Europe has allowed its banks to load up on debt, kept on the books at face value, and treated as riskless and buffered by no capital.
Indebted governments have been pressuring banks to buy more debt, not less. As banks have been increasing capital, they have loaded up even more on “risk-free” sovereign debt, which they can use as collateral for ECB loans. The big ECB “liquidity operation” that took place yesterday will give banks hundreds of billions of euros to increase their sovereign bets. Bank depositors and creditors have figured this out, and are running for the exits.
By stuffing the banks with sovereign debt, European politicians and regulators are making the inevitable default much more financially dangerous. So much for the faith that regulation will keep banks safe.

Banking misregulation was the euro’s fatal flaw. Sovereign debt, which can always avoid explicit default when countries print money, doesn’t remain risk-free in a currency union. Yet banking regulators and ECB rules continue to pretend otherwise.

John should reall spell it out. Socialism is the cause of Europe's demise. Socialist put their faith in government over the freedom of the people to solve their own problems. Socialism takes power from the people and concentrates it in government.

That government is failing all of Europe just as Professor Cochrane describes.

All we need to do to fix America is vote out the idiotic European imitating socialists here, like Barack Obama for example.

The 2010 elections showed the fate of socialism in America.
2012 can't come soon enough.

Ah yes, John Cochrane. Because you can really trust a hedge fund manager who illegally gave Paul Ryan gifts while Ryan was proposing putting the middle class and poor's collective head in a vice while he sipped $350 bottles of wine.

Socialism always equates any resistance to a government attempt to solve a problem as a total abandonment of any attempt to solve the problem.

If you oppose government control of education socialists claim you oppose offering anyone an education.
If you oppose government control of medical care socialists claim you oppose offering anyone medical care.
If you oppose government affirmative action then you oppose equality.

The problem with socialists is that government is the only solution for any and all problems.

The real problem with socialists is that when government fails, as it is today in Greece, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Ireland, etc. etc. etc then they have to find someone to blame.

In this case it is the market, the United States, and the endless blah, blah, blah of socialists completely and categorically incapable of taking responsibility for the real cause of Europe's problems, SOCIALISM itself.

It's so painful to watch socialism implode in Europe, but it makes you happy every single day that you don't live there.
It's so painful to watch capitalism implode in USA, but wait, I don't live there!

A typical socialist claim:

When government seizes power and money from the people in order to promote their welfare and then makes matters worse for them, government always argues that it didn't have enough power and money to do enough promoting.
A typical capitalist claim^

The reality of socialism

Citizens pay more for programs taken over by the government than they had paid before the government came along-and they get less in return.
Tettleton's Chew (0 DX)

Another inescapable truth of socialism.
Whenever government enters a field of private activity, that field becomes a political battleground.

For example, whenever you mix politics with medicine, doctoring becomes a political instead of a medical activity.
Tettleton's Chew (0 DX)
23 Dec 11 UTC
The primary cause of the failure of any particular socialist endeavor lies with the targeted population.

When people are forced to pay high taxes that socialist claim "pays" for a service, whether the people want it or not, then the people are inclined to use as much of it as they can in order to get their money's worth.

This leads to rampant corruption and gaming of the system that destroys not only the system itself, but the self-respect of those forced to participate in it.

You are left with a dependent mass of self-loathing individuals.
Just like those disgusting mobs that rioted in England recently.

@whoever said this: "If Sweden was a state in the United States it would have the poorest living standards in the nation. "

Precisely what living standards are being measured? life expectancy? average literacy levels? services available and affordable on the average industrial wage (look at something like the hamburger index)? average levels of fear that your way of life is under threat? average political freedom? levels of press freedom?

i'm guessing some of these are important, and that in most of them Sweden outperforms most US states.

Precisely, Why is Europe going bankrupt orathaic?
Is Europe not going bankrupt?
Pray tell?
Is socialism a wild success in Greece?
Is socialism a wild success in Italy?
Is socialism a wild success in Portugal?
Is socialism a wild success in Spain?
Is socialism a wild success in Ireland,
Etc. Etc. Etc.

So if Swedes are more literate Orathaic does that mean that more of them understand that they pay over $100 dollars for what an illiterate America pays for a pair of Levis?

How miserable are you Europeans? Not only are you going broke, but you did it all to yourselves and have no one to blame.
The entire European system of socialism is collapsing and all the brain dead, self-loathing Europeans can do is flop around like a fish on the bottom of the boat waiting to be clubbed in the head and put out of their misery.

On US life expectancy, http://my.firedoglake.com/wesgpc/2009/09/30/do-violent-death-and-accidents-in-the-us-explain-its-poor-population-health-performance-probably-not/

........But there is another way to look at the problem, and that is to look at life-expectancies later in life, say at age 40 and 65. I think that is reasonable. Most assault occurs at younger ages. The US is middle of the pack of high income countries in the rate of mortality due to falls. That leaves traffic accidents, but most of those occur at younger ages.

At age 40, the life expectancy in for women in the US is tied for next to last with Ireland among 22 other high income countries in 2002 with a life expectancy 41.4 years. Only Denmark was worse.

At age 40, the life expectancy in for men in the US was tied for 16 with the Netherlands among 22 other high income countries in 2002 with a life expectancy 37 years.......

Conclusion, while the US system may be good for the wealthy minority and the health care industry, it lets down a substantial proportion of the population. This is what largely explains the comparative figures. Although, as TC points out, the obscenely high murder rate also has an effect.
Hey guess what TC, China has the best living standards in the world because you might pay $50 for Jeans in the USA, but in China, you only have to pay $2!!! It must have the best living standards in the world because everything is so cheap!

Oh wait, that's right, higher prices for commodities is actually an indicator of a well-off country. Thats because there's higher demand for it in countries where people can afford it compared to countries where they can barely afford their food. As you know price increases with demand. Whilst America might not be struggling to feed itself (well, some people are, but obviously they don't work hard enough, right?) the stupid idiots in the USA have produced more goods they can possibly consume and as a result prices have dropped because nobody really wants all that shit! Who would want levis for $50 when they're saving up for overpriced healthcare that they've encouraged their government not to provide for free?
fulhamish (4134 D)
23 Dec 11 UTC
The cross country rate of firearm dath in the USA is ~ 10 per 100 000 (i.e., 0.00001 %), the equivalent figure for the UK Britain is < 1 per 100 000 (i.e., 0,0000001 %).
http://www.gun-control-network.org/GF01.htm

The average life expectancy in the USA is 78.3a., while that in Britain is 79.4a.
So common sense should tell you that, altough TC is right, firearm death does contribute to lower US life expectancy, it is a relatively minor explanatory factor.
He does, however, make an important point. And it is one which should be raised again in the context of any future discussion which we might have of gun control and/or capital punishment. Don't forget to remind him.
Haha, I just realised that TC rates the wealth and success of a country based off the cost of a pair of levis. Shows something about Republican priorities doesn't it?
fulhamish (4134 D)

Yep I have a friend in Norway. Prices are indeed very high, but so are the wages (and indeed the level of social security benefits). They are a major hydrocarbon exporter (and have a thriving fishery) and the people had the good sense to stay out of the EU twice, when asked in a plebiscite.
Let's all use TC's ranking system for a country's wealth so Zimbabwe is the richest nation in the world! Look how cheap their jeans are!
Jamiet99uk (808 D)

Will you all stop talking about TC? I've had him muted for a long time now, and I was actually starting to forget he ever existed - but you guys all seem determined to remind me...

"Let's all use TC's ranking system for a country's wealth so Zimbabwe is the richest nation in the world! Look how cheap their jeans are!"

It's not really TC's ranking system, it's PPP (purchasing power parity) and it should be used when comparing the relative wealth of people in different countries - no matter whether you are a socialist or a capitalist. It is a standard economic metric.

Thus while Sweden has a similar per capita GDP as the USA (about 48K) in terms of PPP Sweden is lower (Sweden 36k to USA 48k approx).

Please note I am not commenting on which country is better to live in, just the per capita GDP (PPP).

One thing I am unsure about is to what extent the super rich in the USA push up that average (assuming the USA has more of the super rich than Sweden). Thus are "average" people in the USA really better off than "average" people in Sweden?

If Sweden left the European Union and joined the United States we would be the poorest state of America. Using fixed prices and purchasing power parity adjusted data, the median household income in Sweden in the late 1990s was the equivalent of $26,800 compared with a median of $39,400 for U.S. households - before taxes. And then we should remember that Sweden has the world´s highest taxes.

The Swedish Research Institute of Trade, who made the study, underlined that Afro-Americans, who have the lowest income in the United States, now have a higher standard of living than an ordinary Swedish household.

Reductions in US life expectancy per person in days by cause.

Lung Cancer 197 days
Motor Vehicle Deaths 161 days
Breast Cancer (Females) 145 days
Firearms 104 Days.

When you eliminate the reduction of life expectancy attributed to Motor Vehicles and Firearms the life expectancy in the United States is the highest in the industrialized world.
