Delay of game
Dear admins,

We've been waiting in a web dip game for about two weeks now. Can you please force an un-pause from Europe and Argentina? Thanks!

Original 1958 Diplomacy is a trip.
Have any of you played on that map? It looks CRAZY. You can only build in one or two places. It allows for more than one unit to occupy the same space, and there are all those crazy extra provinces! WOW.

Destroyed units of CD nations
I'm sure this has been answered before, but I'm not quite sure where. If a country is in CD, what is the order of the his units that are destroyed? I believe I saw somewhere it was the farthest away in a non-SC position first, is that correct?

Favorite (Short) Poems? (And Perhaps We Can Put A Few Of Our Own?)
I think we did this a while back, where we posted different things we'd written...and I've definitely had a "Top ___ Works Ever" thread (or two or four or four thousand) before...
So here they are combined--favorite short poems (ie, no Iliad/Paradise Lost/The Waste Land, good as they are, they're longer poems and in another category) and, for the brave...perhaps we can get a Poetry Corner going? :)

Overheating in Ubuntu
So, that thread on Ubuntu made me want to try again on my laptop. I installed 11.10 and I have the same problem as before. On windows, my computer idles at 33-49degC. In Ubuntu, it idles around 82degC. What's with the 40degC increase? Thoughts?

It's a gunboat game as far as the site i soncerned and no one agreed to comments from outside, so no discussing it, but you can follow it.

Congo came in load and clear.
krellin (80 DX)

It would be interesting if somehow, after the game, there was a way for everyone to see the messages that were sent.

I am *totally* geeked about this game.

I think dude in the other thread (WebDip Slump) should set up one of these.
Sandgoose (0 DX)
05 Apr 12 UTC
What do you think draug? is there a way to track this info?
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Apr 12 UTC
Only if everyone keeps the messages they received. I do *not* track them in any way shape or form for good reason. I don't want to be accused of cheating and reading messages not intended for me. And considering I control the mail domain, I have access to anything it ight save. so I intentionally have all messages route through a simple forwarding address that doesn't keep anything.

See, unlike B. Hussein Obama, I don't want the outcome to be tainted with any thoughts of impropriety. Where as he vieled his accusation such that no matter which way the decision goes one side or the other will think the court was politically motivated in their decision, I have made certain I cannot ever see anything not intended for me, ever.
krellin (80 DX)

It would be interesting to put all the notes up on Flickr or something (what do people use these days????) at teh end.
Draugnar (0 DX)

I can host them, but either the sender or the receiver has to save them.

Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Apr 12 UTC
Well, it wasn't actually written for them and it doesn't surprise me as I worte it in ASP.Net 4. they probably don't like either the ASP:Panel controls or the ASP:FileUpload one.

dubmdell (556 D)
05 Apr 12 UTC
Awesome!

By the way, I forgot to drive this question home earlier, would everyone agree to finalize builds and retreats /without/ communication, like in an actual diplomacy game?
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Apr 12 UTC
I will, but I can't say anyone is obligated to.
semck83 (229 D(B))
05 Apr 12 UTC
I'll finalize when I'm ready, but don't assume I'm trying to be a jerk if I don't finalize. Reasons I might not at a given point in time include wanting to hear back again from somebody, not wanting somebody to know I'm not waiting to hear back from them, or actually needing the time (and not-finalizing instead of asking for a pause). Of course you can always ask me too.
But apart from the above conditions, I will finalize. :-)
Sandgoose (0 DX)
05 Apr 12 UTC
I have no way to officially save save them....I will try and keep them somewhat organized...just sent my first message to germany!!! this is fun :P
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Apr 12 UTC
@semck - He was talking about not communicating during builds and retreats, like a F2F game. Although that restriction has never actually applied to postal, only F2F.
semck83 (229 D(B))
05 Apr 12 UTC
Oh, I'm sorry! I should have read more carefully.
Yes, I'll agree to that, then. :-P
Sandgoose (0 DX)
05 Apr 12 UTC
what are we agreeing to?
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Apr 12 UTC
Finalize with no communication on builds and retreats only. Regular phases are to be as normal and we expect them to take time.
Sandgoose (0 DX)
05 Apr 12 UTC
damn...no communication...*whistles* I gotta find a loophole for that.... hmmmm
dubmdell (556 D)
05 Apr 12 UTC
I just don't want to spend a two months on one year. Ya know? Three weeks per year seems like a good pace to me, and finalizing retreats and builds /without/ communication seems like the best way to keep that pace. I have no intention of finalizing my movements, only retreats and builds.
dubmdell (556 D)
05 Apr 12 UTC
The loophole is to discuss builds and retreats before moves go through.
dubmdell (556 D)
05 Apr 12 UTC
You know, if this takes off reasonably well, I could see all my press games being postal/ pseudo-postal and then playing some gunboats. There is a certain magic to this we don't otherwise get. =)
Sandgoose (0 DX)
05 Apr 12 UTC
my hand gets tired...I wonder...can we just record our stuff? stage a mini video or something? is that considered postal...even in some ways FTF
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Apr 12 UTC
I actually have a problem with video and audio. the idea was to recreate the old school postal press games. Type it if you like, print it out, and scan it. You could do that in the old postal days, but the video just doesn't work for me.

That said, that could be another variant of grey press.

I've also thought about adding an optional second login for the player and making the site be able to do mixed press with attachments and all. Even black press (headers faked to look like it is coming from someone else). But all these things take time and I burned almost two days of office time just completing what I did.
Sandgoose (0 DX)
05 Apr 12 UTC
so...you can only tech send press to the intended person and I didn't have to create "official" signatures with each player to inform them I AM WHO I AM...lol...

*sigh* love this, okay...all of you disregard your individual signature...if you get a message from italy...well....it's italy.
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Apr 12 UTC
You are sending to the intended person, but they don't know it came from you. For instance, England could send something from france and visually sign it "Germany".

So let the games begin!
dubmdell (556 D)
05 Apr 12 UTC
SG, we can still try to mimic each other. We don't know who the letter comes from.
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Apr 12 UTC
send something *to* france (not from)

Who would win in a gunboat between seven of yourself?
A fun little exercise that has been helping my play style recently was to learn what bias I have in game. So pull out your dip board and make what you think is the best gunboat opening for each power, then play each power to the best of your ability to win. Who wins? Who gets eliminated first?
