Original 1958 Diplomacy is a trip.
Have any of you played on that map? It looks CRAZY. You can only build in one or two places. It allows for more than one unit to occupy the same space, and there are all those crazy extra provinces! WOW.

Destroyed units of CD nations
I'm sure this has been answered before, but I'm not quite sure where. If a country is in CD, what is the order of the his units that are destroyed? I believe I saw somewhere it was the farthest away in a non-SC position first, is that correct?

Favorite (Short) Poems? (And Perhaps We Can Put A Few Of Our Own?)
I think we did this a while back, where we posted different things we'd written...and I've definitely had a "Top ___ Works Ever" thread (or two or four or four thousand) before...
So here they are combined--favorite short poems (ie, no Iliad/Paradise Lost/The Waste Land, good as they are, they're longer poems and in another category) and, for the brave...perhaps we can get a Poetry Corner going? :)

Overheating in Ubuntu
So, that thread on Ubuntu made me want to try again on my laptop. I installed 11.10 and I have the same problem as before. On windows, my computer idles at 33-49degC. In Ubuntu, it idles around 82degC. What's with the 40degC increase? Thoughts?

Note to self: very dangerous to build all armies in 1901 as Germany.

That basically did me in. I was thinking I would send a strong message to England, to be friends. But then Russia gave up to England so quickly (and kept me from getting a build) that now I was just a bug waiting to be stepped on by England. Well done for seeing that DILK.

The rest of the game was France and I just trying to forstall our deaths due to my mistake of not building any fleets. We had everything all stopped up there, and England was going to lose a center to Austria and then Italy (arg!) just waltzed up the middle and destroyed our stalemate line. WHY???? I guess you were getting bored? If so, fair enough. Did you notice though that England was the only one that did not have the draw toggle on at that point? Italy you may have been included in a draw if you hadn't blown up the stalemate.

After that I just had to make sure I did my part to make Italy die. Accomplished!!! :)

Then I lived way too long, so finally started moving so I couldn't get any supports.

Looks like A/T just couldn't get it together enough to realize that England had a shot, but I wasn't really paying much attention past my death.

Yea, you not building any fleets was huge for me. I am sorry, I knew you wanted to be friends, but as you already pointed out Russia just crumbled and Scandinavia was mine for the taking.

I was stuck at 8SCs for what seemed like ages, then Austria grabbed Moscow from me, but the magnanimous Italian gave me support into Kiel. This kept me at 8 and was now able to finally break through that cursed coastal stalemate.

That game went on for ages though. I felt there were a lot of times where people were readying and just sitting for the 5 minute duration. Not sure why.

At least you didn't have to spend a ton of time with it and then get soloed upon

What was up with Silesia in Fall 1901? I have read people on this site advocating that, but for me, it seems like Germany and Russia usually get hammered on in Gunboat as it is. Why fight amongst yourselves. As Germany I would've given you Sweden if it hadn't looked like a Jug starting, with Turkey letting you in to Black. In hindsight I should've let you in. I changed it at the last minute. You made my life miserable with that fleet in the Baltic.

I made a misorder to Silesia, I had intended to bounce Galicia. From then on I was doomed.

What was up with Italy's moves from 1906 and after? Moving to north Africa and Tunis was odd. I must admit I did try and convoy him to Gascony once

My guess is that Italy just got bored.
DILK (1539 D)

Seriously though, that was a really long game. Especially near the end when Turkey wouldn't input orders until there was 7 seconds left in a phase
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))

It wasn't that long for me :(

In fact I was really surprised the game lasted as long as it did. The usual SOP for the live games on this site are that people get it down to 3 or 4 countries and then a draw is called. That might have been why A and T seemed so slow to beef up the med against you. They probably just assumed that a draw would be called soon, once I was dead. We'll see if they chime in here.
DILK (1539 D)
15 Apr 12 UTC
Well I figure if someone thinks they can solo there's no need for a 4 way draw. If I could have been stalemated in the Med I probably still would've waited until we could get it down to a 3 way. Turkey really didn't try to stop me until too late, I believe he even had an extra build to make, but never did.

Austria congratulated me after the game and France went to bed after he congratulated me.

I think France played an impeccable game and was really frustrating me with how well he defended.

I think it's great that you pushed on to solo. People should do that more.

I was Turkey - and played the middle of the game on my ipad - had to go out to get my son - and after my battery died, had to play on my blackberry phone -so I apologize for both the apparent delay in getting orders in and for not being more aggressive in partnering with austria sooner.
xpedior (707 D)
15 Apr 12 UTC
I don't blame DILK for pushing - would have done the same. Think in this case with better play from me, we could have forced the draw
From the Italian perspective:

I never had a coherent strategy that had a chance of working. I was pinning eveything on a Lepanto while delaying France's advent into the Med, with a plan B of trying to cut France to the quick, but Austria didn't seem too eager to help me in the early going (cough-build in Trieste to move to Vienna and defend against a Russian move south from Silesia, rather than just building in Vienna-cough). When Turkey built three fleets in the Med and I was in total stasis at two fleets, I figured it was just a matter of time for me. But then Turkey sent me sign after sign he wanted peace, which I thought was fantastic, except it would have required that I hit Austria, removing my shield to the east as well. Once the fourth fleet was built, I lost the Ionian and suicided out of boredom. I knew England was the draw holdout, but I'd almost rather lose than be part of a six player draw. So, I screwed with Germany on behalf of England because he was the easiest one to screw with. Although I thought his Belgium convoy to Tunis was kinda funny.

Who would win in a gunboat between seven of yourself?
A fun little exercise that has been helping my play style recently was to learn what bias I have in game. So pull out your dip board and make what you think is the best gunboat opening for each power, then play each power to the best of your ability to win. Who wins? Who gets eliminated first?
